This video compelled us to make the big step up from our first Porsche 997.2 base carrera, after only having it for a couple months. We already miss it, and sorry to see it go. Waiting on the 997.2 GTS delivery we're trading for to arrive. Big step up for us, so hoping no regrets. Great video-makes us more confident in our decision to pull the plug while we had the opportunity.

Wow. Thank you for watching, subscribing and sharing your news. What year, body style, color and equipment is your new GTS? My previous 911 was a 2003 996.2 Carrera, manual. It was the most amazing car to drive and I’ve owned some truly incredible cars. Your “base” 997.2 Carrera was already a 911, and truly one of the greatest cars ever made. Most enthusiasts and professionals alike will agree that the 997.2 generation was the best 911 Porsche made. Even dealer personnel tell me to never sell my GTS. The 997.2 GTS is still a 997.2, so it starts off with the best possible model. By being a GTS, you simply have a 997.2 that is even more special in so many little ways. None of it’s differences alone are so huge, but combined, they take an already outstanding machine and make it more so. The sum is greater than the parts. And the market agrees. When introduced, Porsche (and the automotive journalists) bragged that the new GTS package was a “bargain”, combining features and parts that, if available separately, would cost much more than what Porsche was charging. Today of course, a GTS is worth much more than a Carrera S, and is truly revered as something special and is on practically every list of the best ever 911s. Enjoy your new GTS. Know that it is the best street 911 Porsche made. And if you do track it, like I do with mine, you’ll be amazed at how incredibly good it is on track. The differences truly shine when pushing it near its limits. If you find yourself in the Austin, TX area, please let me know and I’ll take you out on track in mine at the Circuit of The Americas. You’ll never look at your GTS the same way again! Congratulations and hope to see you out there!

@@GTSCarLife We found a 2012 in white, appears almost identical to yours except we have the Alcantara. Also, clear stone guards, rather than black. This was an unexpectedly quick opportunity to move up from the 2010 Carrera we had just found, and loved, but a GTS was our original goal to find, but being very first time into Porsche, figured we would take the smaller initial step, cost-wise, and performance wise. When we found the GTS for sale, we waited awhile, and after some time, consideration, and a price drop, we decided to move forward. Thanks for your offer regarding track time. QUITE generous, and maybe someday we will have a chance to take you up on it. Thanks for the great video, and informative response.

The ride-along offer stands. Mine came with the black stone guards, which I originally wanted to remove and replace with the clear. I have since decided to stay with the black because the clear tend to turn yellow after a few years. The black still look good after 13 years and 67,000 miles. White was the launch color - great choice. Congratulations again! 🏁

@GTSCarLife

Porsche introduced PDK with the buttons only. After the press criticized the lack of paddles, Porsche introduced a wheel with paddles, but only offered it on cars without the telephone and PCM controls. So you could choose between a plain wheel with paddles, or a “Multi Function Wheel” with the buttons. The 991 was the first 911 to combine them all! Thank you for watching, and for your feedback! Love black on red!

This is such an awesome video. I have a 6-speed 2007 Targa 4S with PCCB, sport seats and stock exhaust (which I may upgrade at some point!). Of all the cars I’ve seen the 997 is the sweet spot as you said of old manual inputs and engagement, combined with modern-enough technology. If there were any car I switched to, it would be this in manual with AWD, but like you said, extremely hard to come by. Where did you shoot this? Beautiful backdrops and looks like a fantastic place to be an enthusiast and track cars as well. Not so lucky here in NYC haha. Keep the videos up!
@GTSCarLife
@GTSCarLife 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching! Your own car is very special being a Targa with manual transmission and PCCB’s! Really, all 997s are incredible sports cars, and rank among the best cars ever made. How long have you owned your 997? If you drive mostly on the street, you’ll actually have more fun winding out your car than the more capable GTS. The old “slow car fast versus fast car slow” thing is real. Even though yours is far from slow! The big difference honestly is on track, where my GTS destroys anything I was able to do in a standard 997 or 996. I shot this video outside of Dallas, TX. Tracks included MSR Cresson and Circuit of The Americas in Austin, TX. Thanks for sharing your feedback!

@@GTSCarLife Thanks for the reply! I've owned mine since August 2021. I live in NY and bought the car online after doing a tremendous amount of research and it was in Portland, OR. Had a wonderful time driving it cross country (with absolutely no problems might I add), on a very indirect route through many national parks and beautiful routes all the way back home. Out of curiosity can you explain what the track advantages of the GTS would be over say a 911 Carerra 4S (so hardtop, not Targa obviously) on a track? I'm curious to understand what elements give that distinct advantage. So far no complaints here in the speed and torque department, I simply want to add a sport exhaust for a bit more thrill, but will take my time until ultimately doing that. Need to make it out to TX sometime--looks like a car lover's place to be.
@GTSCarLife
@GTSCarLife 2 жыл бұрын
That’s so exciting- you did it right! I flew in to pick mine up from Porsche Colorado Springs and drove it back to Dallas in a straight shot. I would love to say I enjoyed the drive, but honestly much of the roadway in Colorado was chewed up undergoing a new surface and down to one lane, so I was stressing about getting hit by rock chips. Also, the grooves in the pavement made me feel like I was inside a bass drum! But I absolutely love flying in and driving my cars home! The GTS is superior on track because while it has 23 horsepower more than an S, the power and torque curve is altered to benefit high rpm track driving. The actual speed difference on the street is negligible. Also, the GTS has the rear wheel drive widebody design which helps it to be more stable through high speed turns. The older Carreras needed to be worked very deliberately to make them turn, whereas the GTS just turns and sticks. Yours, being 4wd also has the wide body and rear track, but the added weight and hardware up front make the 4wd model less agile. I notice it because I push hard, but I’m sure most people won’t ever notice the difference in typical use. If you make it out to Texas, you’ve got to drive hill country. It’s pretty nice! Congratulations on your awesome new 911!

This is a BEAUTIFUL car! It screams "COOL"! I had the pleasure of not only seeing it live and in-color... I got to take a little ride around town. It is impressive... clean, classic, "racey", well-appointed, firm but comfortable... oh... and did I mention QUICK?! The car's look is intentional... purposeful but not overly so... It looks and feels effortless and pure. Cars that are done right clearly demonstrate an alliance of art and science and they deliver a true partnership between car and driver... each being an inseparable part of the other. With this car, art and science, driver and car and comfort and exhilaration are seamlessly intertwined. This Porsche 997 GTS epitomizes the driver-car relationship, and as a bonus, it is a gorgeous automobile. Thomas' has used the comparison of the "girl you date" vs the "girl you marry" in his reviews... This beauty is worth dating, courting and marrying... I'd be happy and proud to wake up next to her every day and to take her out on the town every night. (and no... Thomas wouldn't let me drive it!...)

The 2011 Carrera GTS was my first 911 and holds a special place in my heart. I kind of regret selling it especially that I got it for a steal as the owner was very old and could not get used to it and traded it in for a panamera and it had only 1,100 miles and I got it for 90k and he owned an enclosed transport company so I got free shipping from Porsche of Roslyn to Las Vegas. Or maybe it was on consignment but the summer of 2012 I was ready to buy a slightly used Carrera S and when I saw the listing for the Carrera GTS with the low miles and low price (at the time many similar CGTS with low miles were going for 105 to 110k). It had the special non sport suspension that many felt was a sweet spot for street driving even to this day. The only thing I don't miss are the damn brake dust because of the steel brakes. The Carrera GTS I bought also had the carbon fiber GT2RS mirrors and they cost 4k. Sometimes I think about selling the GT3RS if I can find another Carrera GTS with low miles, but I doubt I'll get lucky twice and use the profit on this car for a truck since they have gone way too expensive. At least I have never lost money since 1999 on any cars I've bought.

Great review of a car I'm considering right now. The one I'm looking at is a manual, which I much prefer, for more involvement, and also because the 997. 2 PDK is their first production version, much improved in the 991 cars.
@GTSCarLife
@GTSCarLife 2 жыл бұрын
A manual transmission is definitely more involving, and also allows you to have more fun at street speeds, because you can wind out the gears without losing your license! I always owned manuals before, and wanted one in my GTS, but they were just so hard to find and my car checked all the other mandatory boxes. I have since learned to really appreciate PDK, and because I do spend a considerable amount of time on track, I found the PDK transmission is much faster and far superior for high performance driving. I recognize that most owners will never drive on a race track! Yes, you are correct - newer generations of the PDK transmission are more advanced and smoother. My advice to you, is buy yourself a GTS and drive it as much as you can. The 997.2 GTS is one of the most incredible driving experiences available to the public! Thank you for watching, and for your comments!

I just bought a 997.2 C2S PDK and I slightly wish I had a manual because on the streets as you say you feel you cant keep the car at the revs you want. Your gonna lose your license before you hit the high revs you want. Having said that driving in traffic an auto is the way to go. I have nerve damage in my left foot so I felt I should stick with auto not stick. I need more time to know how to get the best out of the PDK. Love the video and I would love the GTS but the budget got me the C2S narrow body. It’s better for the tight streets of the UK where I live. hell even at slow speeds I like to let everyone overtake so they can admire the form of my classic 911. I dreamt of a 911 as a kid and now I’ve got one. People say to me that I should have got the 4 s but it’s got a smaller front trunk (boot) so the extra space in this amazing car was a plus point. Maybe the narrow bodies have slightly cheaper tyres?!!😂

@-Grifter Make no apologies for owning a 911 Carrera, they are all awesome! My 2003 Carrera was a “base” with “only 320 h.p.” and a manual transmission and was so much fun to drive! I can honestly say in daily driving on public streets, the GTS is no more fun than my 2003 Carrera. Probably a little less even, because I can’t wring it out. What I like on a daily basis is the wide body looks and the rare centerlock wheels. Where my GTS does make a big difference is on track. Most people will never push their car on track like I do, and for them, there is no need to spend the extra for a GTS. As for PDK, it is of course easier in traffic and superior on track (which is the only reason Porsche created it) and I now really appreciate it for what it is. But yes, a manual is more fun for regular driving. Nothing you can do there. Just enjoy your incredible “new” 911!!! Thank you for watching, subscribing and sharing your thoughts! Thomas

Subscribed. Concur with your great assessment of the 997.2 Carrera GTS. So much so that I also purchased a Carrera White Manual 2.5 years ago. Not a daily driver as I have a company car for slogging along, but fun driving is GTS driving. I installed some (no drill) black mesh screens in the front intakes. I like the appearance and the functionality of keeping leaves/sticks debris from damaging/clogging radiator intakes. My car has the Alcanterra vs. your leather option. Can’t go wrong either way. I do prefer a manual and also like the aluminum no button simplicity of the steering wheel in my car (your heated rim would be awesome though) :). Still wish I had a manual, but this car is so hard to find, sometimes you have to take what you can get. I keep telling myself I’ll be happy with a PDK when I’m old. I agree the radiator inlet grills are a really good idea. I wouldn’t be able to drill my car, and haven’t been able to get over the idea of adhesive on the paint either. Right now I vacuum the debris out a couple times a year. Definitely more content coming!

@GTSCarLife
@GTSCarLife 4 жыл бұрын
Hi @A47 K48 and Thank You for watching my videos! The main thing to remember is that ANY 911 is a great car, and one that will provide its owner with incredible, practical and reliable fun. There is truly no other car in the world like a 911. The flat 6 mounted low in the rear, the small jump seats and 55 years of heritage and racing legacy provide a unique and very special experience. I owned a 2003 996 and that car provided me with 100,000 miles of great times. It's still doing the same for its current owner. So really, it comes down to which flavor YOU connect with. As you stated, the 997 GTS costs the same and frankly, more, than a several years newer 991 S. The 991 is smoother riding and more spacious on the street, and the 991 gen is more capable on track than the same model 997. I've driven them all on track, up to and including the 991.2 GT2 RS. I just spent 5 hours on track, instructing and giving rides at COTA in my GTS last weekend. Porsche does make them more stable and more capable with each generation. So drive both, and spend some time around them. For me, personally, the 997.2 GTS is my forever 911. I prefer the more compact size, the hydraulic steering, the mechanical parking brake and the simpler, more retro style interior. Some, like you, may find it outdated. To me, it's classic. Just like a 993 is classic. But there is no wrong or right, only what's right for you. I will also speculate that the 997.2 in general, and the GTS in particular, will hold their value far better than any 991 base or S in the future. We are already seeing this. The world was suffering through a global recession during the time that the 997.2 was in production, and Porsche made far more 991's than any 997. Supply versus Demand is the force that determines values. I don't see that changing down the road. Porsche built approximately 2,265 GTS coupes for 2011, which is significant because 2011 was the last full year of the 997 and also the very first year ever for a 911 GTS. Also, automotive industry experts and journalists alike agree, the 997.2 GTS is a very special 911, and many, including renown Porsche authority Pete Stout and the editors of Total 911 magazine have singled the 997.2 GTS out as one of the best 911s ever made. So there is the long answer. A sports car is a very personal decision, and you won't go wrong with any 911. But to directly answer your question, for me, the 997.2 GTS is the 911 that I just can't let go of! Thanks again for watching, and for bringing your question! Best of luck in your 911 decision!

@@GTSCarLife Wow. Thank you very much for taking your time and giving your honest opinion. I literally got back from test driving a 2012 GTS. Amazing car and drives superb. Haven't driven 991 S yet though it's coming in a few days. Still very very torn between 2012 GTS that I test drove and newer 991 S. Your opinion cleared the haziness in my mind a bit. Thank you very much!

my dream car, honestly I'm not fond of modern 911's and GT2s/GT3/GT4s etc. 997.2 C4GTS would be perfect.

Have you owned a 911 before? The 4wd certainly adds some athletic ability but the 911 was always rear wheel drive and if this will be your first, I’d encourage you to go with rear drive. The experience is special. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing your thoughts!

For porsche probably a manual 911 Carrera S to be honest. They are fun to drive, yet somewhat under the radar compared to the hotter models. But there are far too many cars I would like to drive daily if I could, including some pretty neat classics.

Is the 997 GTS the same width as the 997 4 GTS ?

Yes. Exact same body shell. So normal width for the 4WD, but extremely rare for a wide body RWD. Thank you for watching!

Where in the button for the heated steering wheel, you mentioned it but I couldn't see it on the wheel or anywhere ?
@GTSCarLife
@GTSCarLife 3 жыл бұрын
It is on the inside bottom backside of the steering wheel. At 6:00. You don’t see it as much as you just feel it. Lightly press it on. The heating works well and fast! Thank you for watching!

So the 997 gts is more powerful than the 997.2 turbo S?
@GTSCarLife
@GTSCarLife 3 жыл бұрын
No, the Turbo makes more horsepower. Porsche makes a 911 for every purpose and every sports car buyer. The Turbo is the ultimate luxury GT, and one of the quickest cars in the world. It’s designed for street use, providing face melting acceleration, cat-like agility, comfort and luxury. The GT3 is the race track version, with a suspension and naturally aspirated engine designed to excel on a race track. The GTS is in between, closer to the GT3 in execution but better suited for everyday driving than the harsher GT3. I’ve driven both the GT3 and GTS hard on track and they are very similar. The difference is the GTS is also usable on the street, while the GT3 is slightly faster on track. Thank you for watching, and for your comments!
