To everyone new to power query: I started using it 1 year and half ago. I learned by myself as it is really easy for 98% of things you want to do. It totally changed my way of working. Since then I never had the feeling that I needed to re-do everything from scratch again and again. And Power Query is just the beginning, when you start using Power Pivot it gets even better (both work together). Ah and also, while you learn these 2 on excel... be aware that you are learning Power BI as well as the engines are the same at 99.9%. So yes, go for it, it will change your life forever. (Personally thanks to these new skills I got a better job at a bigger company).

There are hundred thousands of not millions of tutorials out there, written or in video. The abundance for any little thing you want to learn is crazy. However, you watch and read and while the tutorial is going on, you actually follow along quite well. BUT, a day later or two, you remember nothing. With your approach, which is a very structured one focused on actually teaching concepts rather than excersice follow along, you teach know how in such an amazing why, you actually really learn. I am very thankful I found your videos because so far I intuitively try to understand from various sources but with your educative style I can really get it.

Leila, you are a great teacher. I am impressed that you even showed how's it's done the old school method (to be honest, the old school method was what driving my heart pumping and excited about using excel :)) But in the working environment we are in now where velocity + intelligent = success, power query no doubt is a very useful tool to have. And you are only showing the viewer on 228K+ rows of data, think about having more than 1 million rows where native excel just can't handle.

To extract the customer ID, copy the entire column to a new one at the very end of your data set. Highlight the entire column, go to data, text to columns and perform a text to columns using the "-" as the delimiter. This will separate the sets of digits and the dashes into columns to the right hand side. The 2nd set of digits, will be isolated into one column. All other newly created columns can then be deleted. You've now isolated customer ID.

I should use Power Query more, however I would have approached the 'old school' method a little differently. I would have used the Text to Columns feature, select Delimiter and choose the hyphen as the Delimiter to use. For extra spaces, I would use find and replace the space with no space. Then for the text file, just import that into a separate worksheet instead of waiting to try and receive an excel file. Nice video though!
@baonguyenthai3840
@baonguyenthai3840 4 жыл бұрын
I have one problem with your usage of "Text to columns" feature. It's not that it's inappropriate or anything, it's just not automatic enough for this kind of report. I mean, what will you do if next month you need to update your workbook with the new sale figures ? You have no choice but to do the "text to columns" things and all other stuff again, right? By using formulas, it's (kinda) automatic. Next month you just need to copy-paste the new value underneath your current one.
@FutureCommentary1
@FutureCommentary1 4 жыл бұрын
@@baonguyenthai3840 The first time you do it you can just record a macro of you doing it. Next month you click on one keystroke and you have the same transformation with just one click.

I have the same criticism. The first two "difficult" problems being presented are actually quite trivial, one by just opening the text file in Excel, and the other by doing a column split. I would be surprised if Leila didn't know that, so that part of the video ends up looking disingenuous. Send it to the IT department to convert a csv? Really?

@SKarea51 4 жыл бұрын
@@FutureCommentary1 well power query is a dumb down version of MSAccess. I have been using MS access incl VBA and forms for 15 years, pretty much creating enclosed data sharing applications for smaller companies. MS access has lot more to offer then just data transformation and simple joins. If you wanna be skilled analyst you need Excel-SQL-VBA. And this has been the case for last 15+ years. Excel only now contains more predefined solutions at the cost of learning them all. The only advantage of power query might be the processing speed optimization - which is aparent compared to using formulas, but question is how much compared to Access (SQL), they might be using the same engine. But at the end of the day, MS access was/is part of the most expensive MS office package, so this might be viable option for you if you were using MS access only to link soruce files do some simple data transformation so you can save some money...

i learned power query about 5 years ago. i had to take over a project which required 100% certification that each charge was backed by a purchase order and proof of payment. thankfully, the data was all under one roof but the application did not come with canned reports to just that. i am loathed to spend the next 6 weeks 24/7 doing EXACT/MATCH, VLOOKUP, SUMIF and still not get it right. luckily, a team member asked me if i knew SQL. i mentioned that in prior position, i used SQL on multiple data tables. he said you are in luck, if you can grasp that, you can use power query. i built it from scratch, proving 99% of a $350 million job, that took me a couple of hours per day.

@@LeilaGharani i work as compliance officer. I need to filter and sort big data for my company. The most challenging task is based on that data, i need to prepare report which is by entering manually risk scoring for each customer. I worried i might insert wrong scoring while preparing this report. For your information there are few parameters to cross checked before entering score. Hope i can send you email regarding this doubt. I apologise because my english is not good.

You are amazing ! I use to be a MS Office user specialist master in 2000. I am surprise this Power Query technique make repeatable analysis, report so much simpler. I enroll to your course and found it very beneficial. My only regret is I should have done this much earlier ! Well worth the investment and as you said. This little skill in Excel give so much benefit for the rest of my career. Keep up the good work and I forward to learn more from you !

PoweQuery is a beast in terms of transforming data. One of the best things except for all filtering data, remove subtotals, merging, and split columns for me personally is that you can unpivot data. I hope that you'll publish some tips and tricks for PowerQuery too, Leila. As always - love your content.

One thing I would stress, and perhaps you mentioned it and I missed it, is that when creating additional picot tables from the same data you want to make copies of the pivot table itself and DO NOT go back and create a new one from the data model. Doing this has it work from the same data image and keeps the file running more smoothly. Creating another pivot table from the data model screen or the ribbon will conjure another data image even if it's from the same data set. Excel does NOT like database sized data sets and keeping the data from growing unnecessarily will also help keep it from crashing.

I have a folder containing 19 Excel worksheets with each worksheet containing 16 sheets inside it. While the name of the excel files are different, the name of individual sheets inside them is same i.e. they start from "Sheet 1" and go till "Sheet 16". What I have to do is append each sheet at the end of the next one and continue the same to get a new excel file containing only one sheet. (In other words, sheet 1 from file two (say, B) will be appended at the end of sheet 1 from file one (say, A) and sheet 1 from file three (say, C) will be appended at the end of the above two files containing sheet 1 from files A and B, respectively and so on untill every file is added).

Great videos Leila, thank you. Could you provide some guidance as to in what order does PowerQuery execute its queries. I developed a tool that has multiple queries, merges, appends, etc. The result of some queries depend on the execution of the previous one and so forth. The only way I have "sort of" managed to control this is by not allowing certain queries to execute with "Refresh All" but by making the them stand-alone queries and have the user refresh them at the appropriate time. Thanks again.
