Hey, in hindsight, I would've liked to expound more upon some things in this video. I created this video because I was fascinated by how exactly water balance works and wanted to communicate that. However, I believe I could've done better. More elaboration and scientific scrutiny was due than I had performed, particularly at 7:10. First off, Yes, the scientific law here at 7:10 is correct of how water can shift, however, the likelihood of our cells undergoing this "violent" shift are extremely unlikely due to the amount of solute we typically have present in our extracellular fluid. So the state of solute compartmentalization shown at this part of the video is essentially irrelevant. I considered cutting this part, but as stated, the law is correct, but I failed to note the probability. Secondly, do not fear purified water. Purified water is in no way dangerous. It simply doesn't do as great as a job at bringing us to a state of proper hydration than that of spring, mineralized, or even well water. I personally drink about a glass of reverse osmosis water a day. Lastly, it would have been awesome to include some talking points about nutrition in this video. A regretful missed opportunity. Our diet supplies electrolytes, full stop. Those of us that skimp out on whole foods (the suppliers of electrolytes like magnesium and potassium) can likely do better in the hydration department. Processed foods typically come with their share of sodium, but other electrolytes are minimal or non-existent. So, under this case, we'd be getting enough sodium, sure, but would have to work a little harder to get water inside of those cells. The reason water is such a big deal in the electrolyte discussion is because of it's simple, uncomplicated delivery of essential electrolytes straight into our system. It's intuitive on a macro level for studying and on a micro level for our body. Therefore, water was the focus in this video, but these minerals are found elsewhere. Cheers.

This is a topic I thought a lot about but I also read the reports of what’s in the tapwater from the government and I’m not sure that’s much better. Knowing or not knowing? What really terrifies me is purified water in plastic absorbing all the plastic and people are starting to talk about that now but that’s the reason I’ve used reverse osmosis, but I also knew that drinking empty water probably wasn’t that great for me either I see a product launch coming on. Fix your empty water. Someone take it to Shark Tank.

@@CaliforniaMist Reverse osmosis devices have been available for decades. Only reason they're used is they're bulky and require moderately large amount of electricity or other energy to run. I'm lucky enough to get the highest quality spring water straight out of the communal tap. It beats bottled water. As this video pointed out, drinking only filtered water will rob your body from essential minerals so you're probably worse off doing RO than getting some microplastic in your drink.

it seems convoluted to basically demonise distilled water in the video, then talk about how it's not the villain in a comment right below the video :D also slightly unrelated but I guess you didn't notice LMNT is an ultra-processed product when you were recommending it? forget the stevia, it contains citric acid and "natural flavours". Natural flavours are also ultra processed and often pretty far from natural, they mave have started natural but after extraction need a suspension medium which if often a chemical powder or liquid, natural flavours are most often a lie.

My wife has extensive, early-onset arthritis. She decided one day to take hydration seriously. She'd basically been bed-ridden due to joint pain, but within a couple of weeks of drinking more fluids (not just water), she said her pain had been reduced by about 90%. When she researched it to see if there was a connection, there were tons of studies verifying her suspicion that being hydrated helped with joint pain. However, not a single doctor (or self-help guru professing the benefits of water) has ever mentioned the connection to her. That includes her rheumatologist. Usually you hear about glowing skin and idiotic crap like that. She's especially pissed about having spent several years completely unable to walk around like everyone else, wasting a large chunk of her life, because she wasn't given the appropriate medical information. Milk (higher fat milk, I believe, but there's also more sodium in milk, I think) increases hydration at a rate of 130% and also has a ton of nutrients, but since a large percentage of people are lactose-intolerant, it's best to get lactose-free milk. The tablets don't help anywhere near as much as just buying the pre-made milk. Coffee, however, only has 70% hydration (water being 100%, for comparison), Thankfully, recent studies have shown caffeine doesn't dehydrate like we originally thought it did. It's just that beverages with caffeine aren't good at hydrating initially. My wife uses an app to help her with daily hydration so she doesn't forget to get enough fluids. She likes Water Llama (Pro version), but any app would be helpful to remind you to keep drinking.

I'm glad you mentioned how higher fat milk hydrates better. I've always instinctively hated 2% or less. Half/half tastes better and grass fed whole milk is best. And you don't need to drink as much to feel full because the fat makes it more satisfying so you can stretch it out over more meals/coffee drinks. Also hydrating your joints is important and makes sense! Hyaluronic acid needs water to lubricate your cartilage and ligaments! Idk why doctors ignore how wet joints are meant to be. I hope their knowledge gets updated more throughout the profession.

@@jasonmajere2165 It’s not a grand conspiracy, it’s just that everybody, and especially corporations (which are legally treated as being people), looks out for themselves, and, to for lack of a less woke word, selfish acts and their consequences intersect. I’ll provide two somewhat long winded examples along with discussion of how those examples would indicate my thesis to be correct. Let’s first look at the vegan versus carnivore debate when it comes to long-term diets. Most animals in nature have “extreme” natural diets (koalas eat 97% of their diet in the form of eucalyptus leaf or get sick, iirc). Veganism is often pushed as the best thing ever and that consumption of meat should be banned, not just by vegans, but by governments and large corporations, while the vegans themselves generally get lanky and mentally unwell. Multiple governments and medical institutions say that veganism is safe for all people at all stages of life, while ignoring that at least one child has died of vegan-related malnutrition (and that the mother was convicted of murder for her deliberate and continual acts of forced malnutrition that resulted in the death of her child). At the same time many carnivores get obnoxious about how improved their lives have become, while calling others idiots for still buying into the pro-industrialized, pro-big-Ag propaganda and are steadily propping-up an almost alternate economy focused on family farms, down-to-earth living, and a rejection in consumerism. Why does side A of the debate try to ban side B, when Side B side mostly just believes Side A is stupid? Because liars almost always want to discredit and silence their opposition, and most people would rather believe they’re debating with someone stupid versus someone knowingly lying. Eat crap. Want to eat crap again. Eat crap more. Want more. Eat crap again and again until you stop eating real food. Get fat, sick, or both. Then, consult your doctor and take the pills you’re prescribed. Eat even more to cope with the side effects of the pills and the pain and sadness caused by malnutrition. Get sicker and or more fat. Take more pills. Consume until your life has been expended. It’s best for them if you believe can safely eat whatever you want, but that you’re the problem because you eat too much. Humans are not bomb calorimeters, we’re chemical digestion machines. We’re supposed to eat animal proteins and fat, while carbs (primarily consumed in the form of edible plant matter) make us fat so that starvation can be resisted. The human body is beautiful, but most people have been led to believe falsehoods about the body. Why else would the average person be getting poorer, fatter, and sicker while eating more plant matter than ever before at the same time as processed food corporations and pharmaceutical companies are making record profits? And second, there are the boys that think they can be girls (and vice versa) if they buy “women’s” clothing, women’s hormones, women’s makeup, and buy a woman’s sex organs. These boys even can aspire to be woman of the year. Just take the pills and pay for the surgery. They get told things like “If you can’t afford it, talk to your representatives about how badly you want the government to pay for your self-sterilization and medicalization. And then do the pharma companies job again by lying to the public about how happy you are as your “authentic self” while planning to mutilate yourself further because of your dissatisfaction with your actual authentic self.” That was slightly hyperbolic. This crisis didn’t start out planned, but monetization of suffering is lucrative. For instance, tobacco companies didn’t set out to kill people. They set out to sell product. They refused, however, to stop selling product when it was determined that the product kills, and fight tooth and nail to make their product be seen as safe. Tobacco’s damage to public heath helped the rise of the modern medical establishment in the first place. How long until the “more doctors eat X-sugary-item” or the “more trans people took Y-hormone-brand” commercials? Look at how many doctors buy into the gender affirming “care” and processed-and-plant-based food cons. They’re today’s “smoking is healthy” doctors.

Electrolytes = salts such as NaCL (table salt) and KCL (potassium chloride). Stuff you find in Gatorade. More technically, an electrolyte is a chemical that makes water able to conduct electricity. NaCL and KCL are absolutely necessary for your brain and nervous system (and other metabolic processes) to work. (edit) I'm not super worried about drinking purified water. Most reverse osmosis purified water brands contain a tiny bit of added salts and minerals to improve the taste (purified water by itself tastes kind flat and weird). The epithelial cells that make up the stomach and intestine lining are coated with a thick mucus, and mucus is salty enough to balance it out. And as you pointed out, our bodies are really good and making sure our cells get the perfect balance.

@cosmicaug
@cosmicaug Жыл бұрын
@@richardkapowsky6073, there is such a thing as hyponatremia (and even hypokalemia -the words refer to a deficient concentration of sodium and potassium, respectively) which can be triggered by drinking too much water. However, the amount of water needed for this to happen tends to be stupidly high and rarely achievable under ordinary circumstances (and you'd typically not be anywhere near that amount when drinking 1/2 to 3/4 of a gallon a day of any kind of water). The typical scenario is the kid at the rave party under hot conditions and overdrinking water (apparently, MDMA might also inhibit anti-diuretic hormone release which means that we would also be hitting it from both ends by interfering with one of the main mechanisms to maintain electrolyte balance, the kidneys). The mechanism of death tends to be cerebral edema (this is not about brain cells exploding as much as about there being no room for expansion inside the skull which leads to increased pressure inside therein). Under some conditions, the amount of water you are talking about can even be insufficient. When I was briefly working as a roofer, I would fill a gallon jug with water and freeze it to drink the next day while I was working and as it thawed. It was not excessive water intake (and my cells were certainly not exploding from that, LOL!). There exists an affliction of agricultural workers in tropical areas, chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology (it goes by other names too), which some blame on assorted chemical environmental exposures but which is, most likely, due to under-hydration under strenuous, hot weather conditions: very hard work plus very hot weather, plus long hours which over long periods of time leads to kidney problems (the point being that, whatever the cause of chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology might be, such workers would not be hurt by drinking over a gallon of water a day -just like I was not hurt). Furthermore, your physiology will mostly adjust to whatever your daily water intake is (within reason). This actually leaves a small amount of room for manipulation: ie. you might be a bodybuilder who wants to look "shredded" for the big show and choose to overconsume sodium the hours before so that when you stop the body overreacts by overexcreting water (though realistically, you might accompany this with a diuretic, like Lasix, which will be providing the bulk of the effect). It also leaves room for the margin of optimal intake being narrower than the margin of "livable" intakes: ie, if you have a propensity to create kidney stones, it might be the case that a higher intake of water might be desirable (it doesn't matter if it's tap water or purified water, etc.).

@dwerg1
@dwerg1 Жыл бұрын
Under normal conditions it's fine to drink water containing barely any or no minerals, you'll get the minerals through your food anyways. The body will work out the balance without you needing to do anything and it tolerates some variations. I said "under normal conditions" because there are some conditions where it's worth being aware of your electrolyte levels. These are more extreme conditions such as physical exertion and heavy sweating without eating over a prolonged period. You'll lose minerals when you urinate and sweat, if you just drink pure water you're not replacing those minerals. That's when you'll run into problems with fluid balance from drinking low mineral water. There's no problem drinking pure water if you're eating regularly and you're not sweating like crazy. So there's also no need to drink the advertised product all day, every day. Might be handy to put in the water bottle for a workout though, there is a case to be made for that.

A professional dealing with water filtration systems in business offices told me a short story. Their client wanted their water as pure as possible. The pro (sharing the story) informed them it would be a bad idea to do this, as 'pure water' is one if not the best solvents you can find. The customer said BS, do it. He said okay, but he warned them they'd have massive leaks within a year of the systems going live. Just about a year after going live, they were called back to fix the leaking pipes, which caused some serious water damage. The filtration got dialed back (down), all joints were repaired and things were fine thereafter.

I drink it throughout the day. When I'm weak, it picks me up. When I'm hot, it refreshes. After a long walk, it's the perfect way to reestablish my resting equilibrium. Thanks much, for the information. The more we understand about our selves, our processes, the better life becomes.

@semioldguy
@semioldguy Жыл бұрын
It really just depends on the person/situation. For example, I enjoy going on long, strenuous hikes along with a generally pretty active lifestyle, but I'm not necessarily eating/carrying a bunch of food with me on these hikes/activities. An electrolyte supplement in my water helps maintain hydration and keep my muscles from fatiguing or cramping over longer periods of exertion and is a noticeable positive difference with them than it is without them. But if I'm just having a mostly lazy day on the couch and I have a meal from some fast-food place that has a bunch of sodium, the electrolyte pack probably wouldn't be doing much [good] for me and I generally wouldn't have one on those sorts of days. I don't add an electrolyte pack to my water when I'm having a meal, I typically add one to my water when I'm going to be drinking but not eating.

Exactly. Our food contains enough electrolytes that even drinking distilled water won't harm us if we eat with it. This seems like he's just trying to sell us a product with misinformation.

My doctor told me that if I was drinking too much water it could basically wash away my electrolytes so I kind of think it’s more something to worry about in the summer when you’re drinking tons of water between meals. Also, I have to make a concerted effort to get enough potassium and calcium in my diet. I think it’s easy to be low on some minerals if you’re not paying attention.
@CMarie404
@CMarie404 Жыл бұрын
good question and good answers below, and your thought definitely factors in. If we are getting good amount of minerals and such through diet, AND we arent active, then usually just water (and foods that contain water) will be/should be sufficient. Comes down to individual and their lifestyle. Change the above to shoddy diet, and only drinking water, then there may be dehydration. If sick in any manner, dehydration. If drinking a lot of water --you know how some folks try to drink as much water as possible? that can be dehydrating (through dilution). If for some reason only drinking ultra purified/reverse osmosis and not following through with adding back minerals-- dehydration. Engaging in strenuous sweaty activities (no matter diet or water intake)? that'll deplete electrolytes rather quickly. For this I prefer to also add sugar/dextrose into the mix. I experienced dehydration once on a rigorous hike up a mountain on a muggy day. In shape and not new to intense activity, I had been drinking my water fine, but felt really ill. I was getting concerned that something freaky was happening. Then it occurred to me that I may be dehydrated. I burned through my food and beyond. Fortunately I had an electrolyte powder stick in my pack, and I added it to the last few sips of water I had. I could feel difference nearly immediately.

One of the functions of water is to carry wastes out of our bodies. If we "load the water up" with wastes before we drink it, then it has "less space" to absorb the wastes. I drink only distilled, and just added a "structured water" device to it, i.e., run it through a magnetic field, so I'm "making rainwater in the basement."
@kennethbeal
@kennethbeal Жыл бұрын
@@NRGY Thank you! It seems simple, agreed. Took me quite a bit of time/discovery to get here though! And still learning. The wonderful research of Dr. Masaru Emoto (RIP) on crystalizing water after exposing it to different positive or negative thoughts, or spoken words, or written words on vials, is fascinating! The movie "What the Bleep Do We Know" was where I was first exposed to him. The magnetic field/structured water device, helps to "clear the memory" of the water. I could go on. :)
@kennethbeal
@kennethbeal Жыл бұрын
@@NRGY Yes, when someone gives me the "you're not getting minerals!" objection to my preference for distilled, I respond in similar fashion: if one is eating food, then one is obtaining all the minerals needed from the food. If fasting (which I've done for 10 days, max; two separate one-week fasts stopped the parasite that was asking for alcohol -- been sober for 3+ years), then there's an argument that can be made for a mineral deficiency potential. The whole idea of fasting though is that we can survive hungry longer than the creatures feeding off our energy (NRGY :) ). So a slight mineral issue (to me) seems fine. May not be fine for everyone, depending on their individual thresholds etc. And might those parasites use the minerals as a food source? One issue with parasite cleansing is if the body is "full of parasite food" then they will just return. So, heavy metal detox (and many other types of detox!) seems a good idea before any form of parasite cleanse; or, at least, in conjunction with.

Great video explaining a complex topic even to medical professionals. I would add that hydration is a slow process and when you are dehydrated it takes time for those fluid compartments to shift and get back to an equilibrium. This is why it's deadly to rehydrate someone quickly when they are severely dehydrated. The best way to stay hydrated is be consistent with fluid intake. If you pound a lot of water after intense exercise or a night of drinking that can mess with your blood pressure and also you're probably going to just pee most of it out.

Not really, sodium is as important for the body as water, both come together in nature, so the body is very efficient in handling both of them, it is better to take more sodium that you need than to take less, and foods definitely don't have enough, and even less now that society has demonized salt

If you eat "canned" food or "fast food", on purpose, i.e. any other reasons besides you are homeless and you can't find any other free food for at least a month prior. Then you are not going to care about "electrolyte water" or any other scammy bottled water labeling, in fact you probably have no issue just literally drinking sodium fluoride, chlorine bleach, and random perscription drugs and lead from your own house city "tap water"! The chances of someone who is willing to eat "canned items" that are sold at WalMart and Aldi, watching any video or doing any search engine checks about how to ensure your water is good, is approximately literally zero!

It's good to have a little extra in your water, as long as those extras are Na, Cl, and K, and not too much of them is in there. I've had water that was literally yellow from its S content, because it was drawn from a well containing harmless sulfur-fixing bacteria. The stuff is absolutely vile if imbibed at room temperature, absolutely delicious partaken at fridge temperature. Came from Bladon Springs State Park in southeastern Choctaw County, Alabama. This place used to be a world-renowned health spa back in the late 1800s, and even had a posh hotel. There's still a communal bath around the lone remaining pump, though I can't fathom the effort needed to fill that huge volume up, especially in Alabama summer heat! I visited once, during December, and wanted to get a couple gallons to take home. Park ranger seemed very happy to inform me it was safe to drink, but I had to have it cold or it would be a real bad time. I already knew this because I grew up in Lisman, Alabama (northwest Choctaw County), in a home that had a private well -- which was also very sulfurous! While our old home's water didn't need it, the stuff from Bladon Springs has to be filtered because it contains filmy masses of those sulfur-fixing bacteria! Not that they would hurt one if ingested. Might make for some interesting flatulence later on though.

I'm on the MS Gulf Coast, and depending upon the depth of the well (which aquifer or water table it's reaching) the taste and smell quality of the water the well produced can vary. I've had a well that was essentially surface water in that it was relatively shallow at about 30' and produced an extremely iron-rich water that would stain household fixtures (sinks, tubs, toilets, etc) and could ruin any white garments by staining them orange. On the contrast, I've had deep wells (within 20' away of the afore mentioned) that hit a solid layer of gray clay at about 70' down, and didn't exit the bottom of that clay until over 100' down. That water was the coldest, cleanest, and best tasting water of any well in my area. The sand particles were extremely large and the coal lignite was the size of bb's. We had to free-flow it for nearly three days until the screens packed properly with sand and the residual clay was flushed (looked like blue-tinted milk coming out the first day). There's a neighbor that has a shallow well that has the sulfur content similar to that which you described in AL. Straight from the tap, it was terrible, but fill a jug and put it in the fridge, it was delightful. I thought for the longest time that it was "off-gassing" while it was in the fridge until I started using a sealed bottle and learned that it still worked to remove the sulfur taste and smell. We also have naturally occurring "artesian wells" in our area, and they can run the spectrum of cold and clear like the deep well I spoke of, sulfur smelling, or full of iron that would always present with the sulfur bacteria that looked like red string algae. It was all drinkable, just some tasted better than others at ground temps.

I see how drinking purified water could be an issue. However, when you add food sources along with the water, wouldn't that negate any issues? Assuming you are getting the electrolytes in your food? Unless you are doing a water fast, shouldn't be an issue. Then if it is just add electrolytes to your water.

The thing is that we need certain proportion of sodium in relation to the water we drink. 6 grams per liter in normal cases. So it's very hard to get that ammount of sodium in the diet with the ammount of liquid (not only water), that people drink on a daily basis
@kindlin
@kindlin 8 ай бұрын
@@soulofexistence I'm pretty sure an excess of salt is one of the major contributors to at least some of our modern health issues. I know it's a complex topic, but there has been too much direct salt-issue evidence to dismiss the links entirely. Salt is added in everything we eat that isn't straight out of the ground, with pre-prepared foods being the number one offender. If you eat nothing but veggies and, idk, beans or whatever, and rarely indulge in anything where you can't identify every ingredient, then you may need things like LMNT. I know I need less salt in my life tho, not more.
@littlewickedone
@littlewickedone Жыл бұрын
I wanna say your vids are so dope, you're rly hitting the perfect entertaining/informative sweet spot. I feel like this topic specifically is going to be mostly important in the context of exercise or sports, because under normal circumstances if you're eating and drinking normally you could probably drink almost exclusively DI water and make up for the electrolytes with food, bonus points if the food is decently seasoned. Because it's not like the DI water you're drinking is coming into direct contact with any of your cells, the water molecules are gonna get individually absorbed into the blood stream whether or not they were originally solvating any ions. Most people with the average western diet actually have a problem with too MUCH sodium in their diet, so it's not something to worry a lot about for the average person. Where this could become an issue is when you're doing intense exercise or sports and haven't eaten recently, your body can become quickly depleted of water and electrolytes thru sweating and if you only replace the water but not the electrolytes, then you can start having a problem.
