My husband was on a low sodium diet when we were first married. I decided that heyyyyy, sodium is bad for people so me cutting it out will be totally fine! My body did not like the sodium being dramatically cut and I passed out a few times and got quite the lecture at the ER. It's been over a decade so I've forgotten the dinner points of the lecture, but I have a high sodium diet now and my levels are in the target range.

Sodium, salt, can cause a person to retain water. Retaining water, fluid overload, can stress you. Fluid overload means that your body has too much water. The extra fluid in your body can raise your blood pressure and force your heart to work harder. It can also make it hard for you to breathe. So, the science in the early 1900’s may lack the nuances of why it can raise your blood pressure. However, an indirect reaction may in fact raise your blood presser‼️

Not me, when I was eating the standard American diet SAD…. right along with my friends. I’m 72 years old in the last two years I’ve brought my weight from 128 at 5’5 down to 115 by eating only meats, vegetable and fruit. Limiting my consumption of oil. Using butter. I have always watched my weight. Now I am at my high school weight. And you can do it too. Stop eating processed foods.

While expecting my first child, I was given the advice to cut out salt. Worst advice ever. I spent years being so dizzy I was always on the verge of passing out, walking around with BP so low most people wouldn't beleive you could be ambulatory. Thank goodness for Facebook, where I learned about EDS, then POTS, then how that lack of salt was affecting me.

'The development of high blood pressure is personal, multifactorial, not influenced by a single genetic or lifestyle factor; sodium reduction may be advisable for some, but ineffective or counterproductive for others. The most effective approach for risk reduction can only be made on an individual basis by patients and their health care providers. However, if the government is going to attempt to lower population hypertension rates, it should refocus its efforts toward helping people lose weight and increase potassium in their diet with higher consumption of fruit and vegetables. Compared with a salt-centric approach, this strategy would have a firmer grounding in science, be less likely to cause unintended harm, and may even have health benefits in addition to lowering blood pressure.' - Michelle Minton 47:15

For some good information about the trustworthiness or lack thereof of USDA labels, read books by Joel Salatin. Really all of his books are great to read, but "Everything I Want to Do Is Illegal" talks about the creation of the USDA labels specifically as I recall, and "Beyond Labels" also looks to be relevant to the topic, though I have not read that particular one myself.

Never heard a clearer explanation of science in general or of specific studies few of us would otherwise understand. You're amazing and nearly as cute as my grandsons (which is a high, if not necessarily, objective, criterion for assessing attractiveness). Thank you.

TLDR: If you're planning a change in diet, talk to your doctors. Some medications and other conditions can alter your glucose response. I am on a Continuous Glucose Monitor right now. My mom "lent" me one of hers because she was diagnosed as pre-diabetic (and found religion when she discovered "The Glucose Goddess"). Knowing my dad's medical history, she was worried about my insulin response which is why she gave up one of her monitors so I could monitor mine. Here's the twist though - my body was dangerously LOW on glucose regularly! I reached the conclusion that that's why I've been struggling with fatigue and brain fog for so long. The first week on the monitor I was dropping into the low 50s/dL almost constantly. The only time I got above 70mg/dL was right after eating. I did not get much sleep at first! I did some research and found that I was on 2 medications with the potential side effect of hypoglycemia. I talked to my doctors, got my own prescription for the monitors and made a plan to wean me off my antidepressant and if necessary, my beta blocker. It's been just over two weeks and I'm on half my original dose of Duloxetine. The trend is very clear. I'm now maintaining blood glucose levels of around 90mg/dL. I might just be pre-diabetic (or worse) when this is done - we shall have to see, but either way, I'm happy to eat healthier to level out my glucose and keep my head clear and my heart healthy. I was talking to my pharmacist about what was going on when I picked the monitors up. She also had hypoglycemia and was *herself* on Duloxetine. Hopefully I'll get an update from her soon that *she's* making changes that are improving her insulin reactions too.

So I made it to 46:35 without hearing a single mention of potassium which is another critical element in the entire concept as is dictates how much sodium is moved via sodium potassium pumps among often also being a salt in the form of potassium chloride which probably has some sort of effect on something. Was glad to see sugar mentioned as it also has an effect on water potential but said effect was glossed over, but back to potassium. I would hypothesize it has a great effect on how much water is moved where.

Look I'm just an old white guy i listen to a lot of nutrition stuff on KZfaq you have a way about your videos that make learning easy and entertaining the best I've ever seen. Just do what you do and you have no worries. I prefer the edited stuff over the live the live is a bit of a distraction for me but still very good. Very refreshing to see a young man that understands being right all the time is a waist we have to admit when we are wrong so that we can get to right and keep the door to knowledge open always. I'm glad I found your channel. You have a gift your good for the world and your a great example for young people.

Med student here with a personal interest in nutrition - right off the bat I have to say I was sceptical about this video due to the wording of the title. I was expecting some pseudoscientific compilation of cherry-picked sources as to why "everything that's traditional and supposedly natural is automatically healthy and everybody who doesn't eat meat is stupid or malicious". I'm really glad your intro convinced me to try and look beyond my personal bias and just for a second say to myself "well, what if this person has a valuable point that I've never considered?". You really made an effort to be nuanced in your statements and transparent with your sources and methods, which I greatly appreciate. And looking into more recent nutritional research myself, I was surprised to find that a lot of what's still in med-school textbooks nowadays is simply outdated (such as the straightforward link between saturated fats and high cholesterol levels). As you rightly pointed out, it's just too difficult to try and account for all kinds of confounding factors, and it seems we're discovering more and more of them as we look into this. So thanks for educating me on something I thought I was already pretty educated on <3 Only one caveat, I'd like to throw in there: As someone who's all in for that more differentiated approach to dieting and lifestyle in general, I found this extremely fascinating. But speaking from my experience with patients, I also see how this kind of science communication quickly reaches its limits: A lot of patients are looking to us healthcare providers for straightforward, easy to follow guidelines and can't really be bothered with the pretty vast interactions of diet, exercise, sleep, stress, hormones, pre-existing medical conditions...you name it. And *that* to me is the main issue with unhealthy (aka morbidity and/or mortality increasing) dietary habits - they're usually a sign that we've done a poor job giving people the tools and skills to inform themselves about what's best for them. So instead they rely on generalisations and "simple solutions", which is most often provided by interest groups like the ones you named in your video. This goes for both the pro-veganist movement (as you showed) as well as the counterside (for instance trying to demonise soy food for containing phytoestrogens). (To disclose my own bias (I guess) I call myself a budget-ethical-vegetarian, meaning I can't afford to buy high quality meat and I refuse to buy cheap alternatives. I've decided to spend a little extra on good produce and dairy products and treat meat as a luxury, rather than supporting what I find to be an industry of unnecessary excess.)

The information coming from this channel is so so harmful. I truly do believe that this man has the best intentions but he clearly shows a lack of understanding of the literature. Additionally, his channel is now laiden with overly sensationalized claims and fear mongering whilst claiming to offer a scientific perspective. You guys, please go to truly reputable sources for your insight. His sources are minimal and he does not address the other sides arguments whatsoever, instead he makes assertions based on nothing whilst making faulty criticisms and belittling those with adverse opinions. The doctor he brought on is also has no real qualifications for nutrition or related fields, and is known for selling a diet that goes against consensus. Please please please go to a qualified source for nutrition and avoid internalizing content from creators like this, who claim to be scientific whilst also falling victim to every logical fallacy in the book. Dude, I don’t think looking back centuries to see what people eat is fair because people didn’t live very long. Not that that complete proves or disproves anything. Just using it as a metric for health is tricky.
