Indeed. They can, at best be a mid table league 2 team next season, upper half the season after that and competing for promotion the season after that. 3 years to get to League 1 if they are lucky and skilful, 3 years later for the Championship and 3 more years for the Premier League. I'm guessing, at best, if they can find a lot of money, 9 years to reach the PL.

Even thinking of the PL is horribly premature. I'd be amazed if they can reach the Championship in the next 5 years. PL is 10 years+ away, the amount of regeneration in the club, the ground, the town, in order to make them competitive in the PL is enormous. Back to back promotions leaves you very vulnerable to immediate relegation because the step up is huge, and if you do it too quickly it will leave you exposed. If they take it slowly, carefully, it might happen eventually, but no-one that gives a crap about them seriously should even be talking about this now, take it one step at a time, and if it happens, amazing, if it doesn't then, they won't collapse under their own weight like Gretna did in the Scottish leagues.

I dont think anyone within Wrexham is talking Prem. One step at a time. First step is revenue which is why they made the doc and why they put up digital billboards. Which is not a bad thing. They need revenue to not break FFP and that is the way to do it. Sponsors, ads, lots of fans ect. Rob is the guy who made it happen, but as they both say, Ryan has an extreme knack for business and its paying off. They need to build a foundation that can carry the club in the upper echelons even if it is "just" the Championship. Because combined those two guys can maybe muster Brentford money, but thats it. Even the owner of Brighton is a billionaire. At some point they will need outside investment unless they pull a Brentford miracle.

"Wrexham could be a Brentford or even a Brighton." I'll have to admit at first I didn't believe that since Wrexham is only about 60,000 or so people. But I read how they effectively have the market of North Wales to themselves, so in theory they could have like 700,000 "local" supporters if they continue to operate their club well. I think they can do it.

Currently slipping down a Wrexham You Tube rabbit hole and I've just clicked here after watching a clip of Ryan Reynolds conducting the crowd from the Directors Box as they serenade Rob McElhenney with his birthday song that RR especially produced for him a couple of weeks ago. This is just before kick off for Boreham Wood by the way, quite an important game. Reason for mentioning this is that Matt mentioned football fans "can be a bit mean and a bit prickly" but there is a comment on the video (credit to a Dave Whatt) that for a level headed football supporter I think sums up how a lot of us are feeling. It reads, "I'm jealous of Wrexham in the best, most loving kind of way! What an amazing gift those two fuckers have been to your club. I wish them all the success in the world and I'm so invested in the journey!". I get the feeling that this is the start of something very special we are witnessing here and good luck to them!

Wrexham will probably get promoted from League Two next season but League One will be a much tougher challenge. There are some big clubs in League One. Two or three seasons in League one but then Wrexham will be at a level that they will have to be at there best to stay at. The Championship is a killer division with some very big clubs that are effectively Premier League Clubs in the making. Look at some of the clubs that have recently been in the Championship: Newcastle, Leeds, Nottingham Forest, Burnley, Blackburn, Norwich, Fulham, Brighton and the list goes on. Good luck to them but it's a long hard road to the Premier League.

Very insightful discussion. As an American who has followed English football for 20+ years, the Wrexham story is truly something to behold. It is also true, as you note, that Ryan and Rob are not just great actors/producers, but very shrewd businessmen. As evidence? Even if Wrexham stayed down this year, they would still have the story, the human side, the fan side. I also think they fully understand both the drama and the elation, AND the potential heartbreak that is the essence of football. They were genuinely thrilled at the Wrexham getting promoted not just as owners, or as shrewd business guys leveraging the drama, but as guys that have become fans of the game. That is obvious. Yet I also think they understand something that true insightful observers know: that success is on knife's edge for teams that are not the giants in English football. It is not inconceivable that Wrexham could have been headed to the playoffs and not Notts county. And playoffs are a crapshoot: weaker teams in any game can beat stronger teams. It could have easily been another National League year in 23-24. The margins, even at the lower levels of the pyramid, are thin. I think Matt Slater is right about the quality of Wrexham's side, especially on the attack. Paul Mullin, for example, is an exceptional finisher, but on the wrong side of 25. Moreover, the higher up in the leagues you go, the better the defenses. But in the next three years, the squad will have to turn over. Clubs don't always live or die on who is coaching -- sometimes managers get sacked because stupid fans call for their heads. Sean Dyche should have never been fired from Burnley, and while I am sure Kompany is a good manager, is he the reason they are kicking ass and heading back? No, it is the PLAYERS that are largely responsible for success -- or failure -- not coaches. Talent assessment, player acquisition, and player development are THE essential qualities of a successful team. Pep Guardiola is a good manager, obviously, but he did ZERO to make Erling Haaland the player he is. If City win the title it will be very much due to Haaland. Wrexham has a long road ahead, and there will be serious bumps in the road, creating good documentary drama, because such drama is inherent in running a club. But the margins are very very thin.Wrexham could stay in League 2 for three years, or they could go right to the top next season. To get to the Prem by successive promotions has very very VERY long odds. No matter what, it will be fun to watch!!

@@jcgunther2092 That really is a good marketing line because around central England ( where Wrexham are near to ) are where the first Association Football clubs were formed ( out of older clubs who played different variations of 'football' before standardising the rules ). There is maybe one year or two or even a few months, between the oldest clubs and also, many clubs have folded or amalgamated to form new clubs, since that time, so virtually all clubs probably have roots to the 1860s, 0s and 80s. The oldest Grandstand left is at Great Yarmouth Town FC in Norfolk. It is also a listed building. The ground was built as an athletics, cycling, track, cricket ground and other stuff. I mean every club has history, even the local small towns with 1000 capacity. Many have been playing on the same field since the 1870s. Wrexham are obscure for most people outside Britain. In Britain, they are well known, like Stockport and Kings Lynn are known as lower league clubs.

It is the same as tens of dozens of pro clubs and even more amateur and semi-pro clubs - all with interesting and unique stories, communities or philosophies and histories, once to start reading about all the clubs pro and not, you find they all have their own character and stories. They only difference is, they don't have cameras on them for a docudrama - soap - reality show. There are tens of dozens of owners who care and are invested and clubs ran by supporters trusts and volunteers - it is not a unique story. Wimbledon AFC are the only club who were from local leagues and over a period of 15 years rose to the then Division One and stayed at the topflight for 20 years, into the early PL. Then bad ownership bought it crashing down. They did that with no millionaire owners but with people who cared about teh club and they played in an old school small non league ground, that had about 5000 average attendances in the top flight. They won the FA Cup and often finished in the top half of the table, hammering teams like Liverpool along the way. That is just one club. To be honest, it is a much bigger story that Leyton Orient just got the championship of League Two, with no money and coming back from the brink of folding, like many clubs go close to often, so it is also not all about money and hype. Once Wrexham are getting smashed 4-0 by say, Bolton, on a Tuesday night in January, how many of the new tourist fans will stick around? It is easy to say bombastic statements when you own a club that is "big" in the non league - it will be different when they are just another club in League One and even a smaller club, with less resources. Wonder how the TV interest in the US will be then also.

Norwich actually have spent most of their history as a Third Division south team ( aka: fourth Division, aka, League Two ) before going up the leagues in the late 60s and first time in the top level in the mid-70s and have stayed in the top two divisions ever since.Won a cup, got into Europe, finished 5th and 3rd in the top flight - All done without hype and money as well and kept their independent integrity, had an owner from showbiz in with the fans at away and home ends and fan meetings and rescued the club from bankruptcy in 1995 - yes Wrexham are not the only club on the planet, nor one from a one club region. The thing that trips up a lot of these clubs that have come from non-league is the FFP rules. Thanks to their ownership, the club has a larger social media following than many Premier League sides. This gives Wrexham the potential to actually be one of the top spenders on players in each league through the Championship. I honestly think they will cruise through Leagues 1 and 2 and may stall for a few seasons in the Championship. Only because the Championship has similar promotion rules to the National League, with so few spots for so many clubs.

Yes and how many of these "global fans" are interested in a team getting smashed 5-0 by say, Derby or Bolton, in League One ( IF they get there ) on a January night game ? Or Sunderland or Norwich in the Championship? It is not so cool and glamorous then. How much can they handle that crash down to earth that makes all the current hype irrelevant ? I think people need to climb off the hypetrain and taste some coffee and frankly, it seems odd that still the owners choose this marketing tagline of: "we want to get to the PL" - when they have not even played one single game in League Two yet. Let's see how they deal with League Two first. Once and IF they get into League One / Championship, the clubs are massively more developed and experienced in those leagues and have been maybe in the top two divisions for several decades. Making big statements and riding the hypetrain is easy when you are a big club in semi pro league systems, though once in League one, you are not the big club anymore, you are just another club and even more so into the Championship. They are not the only club ever by a million miles, to have new owners come in and invest.

@@aliencactus720 Let's examine your argument. First, Wrexham never was a semi pro club nor did it play in a semi professional league. The National League is NOT a "semi-professional" league. Those would be the leagues below the National League. That premise of yours is completely false. Second, look at the record of Stockport in League 2. They just came out of the National League last season. Third, most of the players for Wrexham both played in and thrived in the higher leagues. Fourth, Wrexham's sponsorship deals expire this summer. They can point to the club's global appeal and exposure via the documentary to command fees that the bottom of the Premier League sides couldn't even get. Fifth, all of this means that the FFP rules that stalled out Salford and many others will not be a straitjacket like it was for them. It will actually allow them to be one of the "big boys" in each league right up to the Championship. Maybe you should stop drinking your Haterade and look into the history of Morecambe. Or the history of the Cherries.

Regards the National League ( or as it was know as 'The Conference League' Players and clubs in the National League, operate at a semi-professional level, not ALL clubs operate like that but many or most do and it is listed as a Semi-Professional League and in the 35 years since I have gone to watch football, it always has been and was since it's inception. Once you go into National League North and South, then these are 100% semi pro clubs, coming up from the Northern or Southern leagues, with attendances maybe averaging 200. That means that many players perhaps have a day job. Or it means that the clubs rely on volunteers to operate. That is nothing unusual. The Conference and National League has always been were semi-professional cubs are and the highest level of the semi-pro and amateur leagues. I would really check that first before proceeding with any other ideas. Aside from that, the other points you list, I am not sure the point ? Yes, Stockport got promoted and so on, good that is great and great for all the other clubs. I haven’t seen anything to suggest they are investing youth development so they can field more homegrown talent to help keep long term player costs down, but that would be the other way to improve and maintain their ties to the area. It seems like the teams ties to their fans is really what has sold the story. Keeping that has to be their biggest concern.

I think they can get 3 consecutive promotions. I really do. If Stockport can get to the league two playoff final this year, Wrexham can certainly finish top three in league two. League one would be toucher than league two, but if the owners can put some more cash into the transfer budget to rebuild the squad they could do it. If the Kop stand is done on time, they can take a big step up in match day revenue just as they go up into league one which would allow them to spend more.

I don't think they're in a rush and they certainly don't have the funds to breeze through the leagues but I think that's a good thing. Most Wrexham fans would prefer steady progress with a sustainable financial model in place that doesn't mean their owners will be out of cash. Most fans worth their salt want stability over unrealistic pipe dreams with risky financial ventures that could backfire and send them spiralling again

This is from an American POV, this is why US sports look so much at potential territory when determining sports franchises. If you compare Wrexham vs Salford, Wrexham has a beautiful ground and north wales. Salford is a Manchester suburb with United, City, Oldham, Stockport… Wrexham has a much bigger ceiling than Salford

I remember as a kid in the 70's growing up in Colwyn Bay (who also gained promotion to the Welsh Premier League this season), Wrexham were a big deal and a well loved club, an uncle of mine from Llanberis who died recently in his 90's, would always talk about that goal Mickey Thomas scored against Arsenal, Wrexham were a big deal across North Wales, what happened to them was so sad so I couldn't be happier to see them get all this attention now, it's a great story and I think they have owners who want to do things properly, it will be so nice to see them back in the second tier again and I have no doubt they'll manage it, whether they get beyond that, well I think that truly will be a fairy-tale ending, I can't see the Rob and Ryan train slowing down or coming to an end any time soon, it looks like they're in it for the long haul.

They need to setup a solid second squad (Wrexham Reserves started playing in the Central league this year; 2-6-2), start on a youth program, upgrade facilities and scouting, save for rainy days and future transfers. It's going to be difficult to get international players to decide to go to north Wales, Ryan and Rob and guest stars will help with this, as will the matchday crowds. Depending on how these things go they can add squad depth for cheap and start working on offsetting costs through transfers out. If they only ever bring people in, it'll be very expensive. Imagine this team if Mullen had gotten injured. They don't have the squad depth yet, and they'll need it more in the next few years. Should challenge for promotion out of league 1 in 5-7 years. Sooner if they don't care about crashing back out.

The point about money is important to watch. They mentioned the sponsorship renewals, with attention they’re getting, they could generate more revenue then club has ever imagined & it could be unfair to other clubs until they make it up to Championship in however many years. Promoted 3 years in row is a bit much. Was it the Red Bull team that did it in Germany because they had financial advantage?

Yes, just like any other club can bit it is not that easy. There are clubs in League One who are vastly more experience, with bigger resources and much bigger fanbases and the top League One and Championship clubs are way above League Two levels. There are plenty of clubs who have tried this and failed, with money. The biggest story this season is Leyton Orient who just came out of League Two with NO money and being nearly out of business, they just won the championship. It is not all about money.

Possibly a little bit dismissive of the North Walian population that drift towards the big Merseyside and Manchester clubs. Convoys of coaches regularly departed North Wales to both areas on match days. It's not a given that that support will easily shift to Wrexham. And, yes whilst they may be the only club in North Wales, 3/4 of the population live in the South. Otherwise they've absolutely got the potential to rise high in the game if they keep being run well and building on what they've achieved so far. Bournemouth are a perfect example of a club no bigger than them who got to the top and held their own.

Unless the two owners are going to be incredibly generous, they can't get to the premier league on finances alone. It will be essential to get a really good scouting network, youth development, and really beef up the commercial revenue, just to compete at Championship level, and they'll be facing teams with much bigger budgets than them, including just just down from the premier league with parachute payments. It's certainly not impossible, but their success so far is based squarely on outspending the opposition, by quite a large margin. That blueprint for success won't be an option for them in the championship.
@jasonb97

Pretty sure that's common sense for them... as long as they have their fans patience, they can build for the future... 1 stand is up for redevelopment already... seeing the plans it's a Championship level stand, but for sure they will be planning for future Stadium redevelopment... New Training Ground is a must if they want to compete for years to come... they could scout all the Northern part of Wales and develop talent under their new academy... the blueprint is there... if they're not impatient, the recipe for success exists... now Premier League is a little early, but good for them dreaming big... seems like they won't leave until they reach Premier League...

I think Wrexham has a bright future - but this myth that they're going to reach the Premier league in two years seems a little ahead of itself. I would say they're going to need a bigger bankroll to get to the Premier League. They don't have a multi-billionaire or wealth fund. Which even the SkyBet teams have. They also don't have the database of a Brighton to help them find bargains. So they're going to have to scout the old-fashioned way. Also, the question becomes at what point does the novelty wear off. No, they're not artificial. But they are marketing themselves on the story. But Hollywood meets Wales only plays for so long. At some point, they're going to have to adjust the business model. Now, perhaps that's when they're in the Championship and the club remains stable. But if that transition happens in League 1, things could be tight for a time. Still, I think Luton is a fair point of comparison. And this is definitely sustainable long-term. If things are handled the right way in the future.
