How radioactive are bananas and other radioactive foods?

It is time to take a closer look at some foods that are often said to be radioactive: bananas and brazil nuts.
How active are they in reality? And why would they even be radioactive in the first place?
Can I find something way more active and still edible in a grocery store?

It's exagerated. The Brazil nut Oil is healthier than most oils/fats you may consume and it's benefficial, but you can only eat like 3 of these per day or something

Fluorescence is surprisingly common - and unknown. I didn't know about the fluorescence of bananas ripening and the turmeric in curry for most of my life - even though I am very interested in fluorescence... Thanks for watching!

You can eat as much potassium as you want without substantially affecting your radiation dose since the body regulates potassium levels very tightly and any excess is simply excreted.

Just wanted to say that back in 2001-2002 we did WMD drills at the fire department I was volunteering at with a Geiger counter and as we went through the firehouse we found uranium as well as some other radioactive material samples but when we got to someone's lunch box the Geiger counter was going crazy......as you would assume we were all very reluctant to discover the contents.......it was a banana!!! So I am curious as to why your device did not get the same results.......perhaps the military grade Geiger counter we used as apposed to the civilian grade, is there even a difference? Anyways, great video, love your Chanel, thank you so much and keep it up!

yes there is difference, way more sensitive so it lets you detect high radiation from a distance before getting close. It has larger "antenna"

yes, maybe the banana made a difference... in 2001-2002 maybe fruits were more "juicy" and modern agriculture made em blank of nutrients... anyways potassium is base for whatever cultivation so i dubt it lacks nowadays so hardly there may be difference in terms of potassium.... but a geiger going crazy for a banana? i don't think so, i may be wrong but.....

@@dimitar4y Well, more accurately a larger gas chamber. Geiger counters are a bit like a gas discharge light, but slightly lower voltage to keep it from discharging all the time. However, this very high voltage means a single ionization event will light the whole gas chamber up from the ion cascade. In addition, having a larger volume or higher density gas increases sensitivity as both increase the chance of ionization events.

Thank you for doing this video. I have tested food over the years after Fukushima and never found increased radiation in bananas. Seaweed however I obtained some pretty high levels. I suspect it is radioactive iodine. It does go away after a year or so.

Anything you eat is of low radioactivity generally. If you have sensitive counter, you can detect on what part of the bed you sleep on due to potassium in sweat. I've tried that with my scintillator probe. It was clearly measurable though not high radiation compared to background. I'm surprised to see that much radioation from banana peels!

We do live in a radioactive world... I was surprised by the ash from banana peels too. Seems too high to be only from potassium, but I could be wrong. Haven't found a reliable source on how high the potassium concentration can be in banana peels. Thanks for watching and sharing!

Cool video! I have a gamma spectrometer that I made, and I can detect the 1460 keV gamma emission from K-40 in the same Seltin salt that you have. It is a 63x63mm NaI(Tl) gamma spectrometer, that I built from parts off eBay. If you decide to get one, keep in mind that you need a larger crystal to detect the higher energy of the K-40 gamma! :)

Nice spectrometer :) I am dreaming of the Gamma Spectacular GSB-2020-Pro kit with a 2x2" NaI(Tl) probe. That should do the job very well. But it is a big investment for me...

@@brainiac75 Thanks! Yeah, those Gammaspectaculars are great but expensive. I could not afford one of them. That is why I chose the diy-route. Mine cost like 300-ish USD in total. But it took a while to build and calibrate, which is something you don't have to do with the Gammaspectacular. Anyways, good luck! It is fun to measure stuff with it, like uranium rocks, uranium glazes, thorium stuff, K-40, Am-241, and even Lu :)

3:28 If, using some help from the periodic table, I look at the names I can understand some of the compounds: Natriumklorid: Sodium (Na) Chloride, Kaliumklorid: Potassium (K) Chloride, Magnesiumsulfat: Magnesium (Mg) Sulfate This is because some of the early chemists were German and as Danish is a germanic language so they are simmilar enough.

You should concentrate and separate the Potassium-40 from the other isotopes and re-test. ;) There is only about 64mg in that 1kg bag of KCl, but even so, if you slowly recrystallize it, it should make for a pretty impressive little sample indeed!

Radiation, fire, and electricity are all in a similar category of danger in my opinion. They are all perfectly safe when the correct precautions are taken. They can be useful tools, but you must respect the danger that they can pose and treat them accordingly.

Thanks for the test. Im having the feeling, that your testing for halogens, ie. fluorine, chlorine, bromine. Also found in most pesticine, fungicide, insecticide and so fouth. Would like to see a test on toothpaste (ofc. with natrium fluoride) and some of the poison-cides. Test anything with some kind of halogen in or on it. Thanks in advance.

If you leave your meal to burn in a pot without stirring it, the coating on the bottom of a cheap pot can chip off and become part of the meal... Don't ask me why I know xD Thanks for watching!

There were some really radioactive beauty products, toothpastes and chocolates available in the radium era. Quite crazy by today's standard... I don't have any of them. Rare and highly collectible = pricey :) Thanks for watching!

Potassium Chloride is also used in alot of food out here in America. It's one of the GRAS that the FDA has considered safe, although most of the chemicals on that list are not really safe to eat.

@@brainiac75 I wonder if views per video are affected negatively despite total views being increased or constant when frequency of uploads is varied Also, this video already has more views within hours than all of my videos combined xD (not surprising, I only have ~150 subscribers and the content is very different, etc, I just find it funny cause I wiiiiish one of my videos could have 100s of views lol)

NuSalt is the most active thing I've found in a grocery store in the USA (unless they sell the thorium-doped lantern mantles, of course). It is 99% potassium chloride. Much hotter than the other salt substitutes.
