How Rifling Was Invented-Experimental Archaeology

As the title says, I believe I have stumbled upon how rifling in gun barrels came to be. Longitudinal, spiraled forging scars that were never removed from the bore of the barrel may have been an accidental discovery of adding spin stabilization to a projectile.

The japanese invented a method that is a hybrid of the C tube method and the spiral wrap method. They would use one kind of steel for the C barrel and then wrap the C tube in another alloy of steel.

@@veteranironoutdoors8320 the process is called undonbari it is similar to Russel's method with the additional coil reinforcement. I the abstract of read a paper from research gate written by hideo nakae of waseda university about the process. The process is very hard to find in film.

Astute observation, sir! There has to be documentation somewhere regarding rifling. Have you found anything that at least mentions it?

Nobody knows how it originated, just that it started showing up in various forms around the same period.

Sounds very possible. Many innovations were the results of accidents or errors like the one you describe.
