For further education purpose, art is not only about what you paint and how good you paint. But rather a business and could be in some case a war in culture strategy. As everyone knows France was leading the game of Art for now centuries. At the end of the war ( WWII) France was at its lowest, intellectuals have been chased, and America saw an opportunity to invade weakened old europeans country to established their consumerism empire. The CIA then builded a hype and financed artists such as Rothko , Pollock , De Kooning and furthermore. They financed an 1958 exhibition called " The New American Painting", creating a market for those artist to establish their dominance. Arguably MArk Rothko, was a fabricated hype around something that didn't require a great amount of techniques, like painters have been acquiring for centuries or even more recently such as Picasso who learn figurative to then change the bases, as he could paint both way. The feeling major people have about Rothko's work and the simplicity of execution is fair. People are attracted by the hype and the promotion around it. Rich people who speculate on art at this level just buy to invest or to buy a social status. The more something is shown the more people accept it in their visual environment, but don't necessarily tent to prove the quality. An example would be McDonald sells millions of burger per day, doesnt mean its better than a 1 star Michelin Restaurant. Andy Warhol who was extremely attracted by fame and money, arguably before all, understood it all, by doing silk screen painting that you can reproduce indefinitely with slight colors differences. And to target the greed and ego of the VIP by doing their portraits and never offering one, to not devalue his money press.
