I was in the arctic paratrooper brigade in the US (Alaska) and I think the the Royal Marines are cool as hell. Definitely #1 choice, had I been born in the UK.

We have armed forces but are unable to train them properly because of funding cuts, so when they are required to operate in a combat environment they will be doing it unrehearsed/practiced and therefore a disaster waiting to happen. In World War Two the reconnaissance in force raid on the harbour of Dieppe was militarily a disastrous failure due to improper planning, however, we were able to use it as a learning experience which heavily informed how we could retake Europe on D-Day 6th June 1944. Politicians need to be aware that this lax attitude to defence does not bode well. If we are going to put our young men and women in harms way then we have a duty of care to ensure we give them the best possible chance of mission success by training them properly.

MrCardinal1965 good comment and historically accurate. Thing is though, that’s exactly what this exercise is. Cuts for the military are bad but you can’t say they don’t do exercises to gain that experience.

Thing is politicians care about their next term in office, not about other people’s lives, otherwise they wouldn’t create so many wars for our children to die in. Plus the more money they’ve saved the better for their career......

The UK is way too trusting of the US protecting them in case of a big conflict.

@@TrueChell the US/UK partnership isnt just about protecting the UK you know, NATO does a good job of that, our core ideals are pretty much similar, though not so much our leadership!

The video states that an exercise was cancelled last year because of funding cuts. Hence soldiers in part drilling in the daylight. When I deployed in 1990 I was able to quickly adapt to the environment and had total confidence in my acquired skills and training due to the years of thorough and accurate role specific training. Lt Gen (Ret) Sir Hew Pike (Speaking in ‘Falklands experiences 1986 as seen by OC A Coy 3 Para’- time interval 10.36 on KZfaq) reinforces this point emphasising the need to avoid paying lip service to aspects of training. Ergo training must be realistic and as close to the real thing as possible- ‘train as you intend to play.’ And finally to quote Clausewitz: ‘It is of immense importance that the soldier, high or low, whatever rank he has, should not have to encounter for the first time in war those things which, when seen for the first time, set him in astonishment and perplexity; if he has only met with them one single time before, even by that he is half acquainted with them.’

i think that offshore assault craft isn't suited for arctic warfare. A CB90 kinda vessel might be applicable.. They are too exposed to the extreme weather. How can one function well, say the navigator, in the dead of the night with -20 degree temperatures, and travelling 40knots. Your face and googles is frozen in seconds. Unless you cover up entirely - but then again you loose the function of awareness..

Ear infections caused by cold? Lol. Ear infections are normally caused by a virus, bacteria from the upper respiratory system, the outside temperature has nothing to do with it. In fact, bacteria prefers warmer temps. ;) I think that cold can cause a bit of an ear ache in some cases, especially a cold wind. Was that what you meant?
