Be sure to comment #Giganotosaurus below for a chance to win a copy of Prehistoric Kingdom! Three years ago I made my first large scale animation for the channel, where I took a look at how scientifically accurate the Jurassic World Mosasaurus was. Now, I'm beyond happy to bring this series back from extinction and kicking things off with the newest antagonist dinosaur in the franchise: Giganotosaurus! For the rest of this year and next year, these kinds of videos will be my primary focus for the channel going forward. I'm beyond excited to see what the future holds and I can't wait to bring more animated dinosaur content for you all to enjoy!

Can I just say, it is unfathomably badass that we know so much about dinosaurs. Not only do we know this thing existed, we have an idea of its speed, it's metabolism, how much it ate, how it hunted, it's ancestry, among so many other things. These aren't animals we can go an observe in the wild. This thing lived tens of MILLIONS of years ago and yet we can still infer so much about it. The field of paleontology never ceases to amaze me, and thank you for making videos like this to teach us!

The idea that we could actually “know” anything for sure about dinosaurs is pretty absurd when you take into account just how little we know about our own world in the present day. There are still creatures here and now in the 21st century that baffle us. How on earth could we be expected to have “facts” on creatures that lived hundreds of millions of years ago. Lol! For all we know, sauropods could have been fire breathing dragons, and we would never know, and though, unlikely, anything is possible. Raptors could have flown like pterosaurs. Old bones and fossils can only give us so much information. The rest is just guesswork.

@@Bagelgeuse Exactly, and the fact that *spoilers for dominion* the prologue was cut from the final movie made the giga even less intimidating and evil in a sense. Your average fan that just watches every movie wouldn't have known the giga killed Rexy in ancient times, and it made the teamup at the end a little useless too. I think they wanted the Giga to have a more unique silhouette, since regular viewers won't really see Giga as a special threat since it looks a lot more similar to the T Rex without its spikes. Some argue they could have just used concavenator if they wanted a dinosaur with a taller back, but it's simply not as big and like the reason Deinonychus was renamed to Velociraptor in the first JP, Giga simply sounds cooler.

It seemed to me that, at one point during the film’s creation, they wanted to have the giganotosaurus in modern day be a hybrid of some kind, but that got lost in development at some point. Probably around the time the prologue was in development, they’d spent too much on the hybrid model and so they decided to use that instead of making a more accurate giganotosaurus model. They probably figured people didn’t really care if it was accurate, they’d spent too much, the toys were already in production and ready to be sold.

A silver-lining of the JW Giga is it probably acts the most realistic out of all the antagonist dinosaurs we have seen to date. Apart from the fact it just kills a t rex for no reason in the prologue. Real life carnivores don't immediately go for the kill if they see a rival in their territory. They will try to scare the trespasser off first, and then attack if the tresspasser doesn't go away. But animals rarely kill eachother for territory, especially solitary animals.

Heck a realistic design with a vibrant colour palette would have been enough to distinguish it from the Rex for the average audience since that Dino is still from the 90s.

A clip of Trex and Giganotosaurus 65 Million years ago kind of sums up the level of paleontological understanding the J-world trilogy has. There isnt room in an ecosystem for 2 apex predators to adapt to eat the same prey. I was around way back during Jurassic Park's release, and it's really hard to relay just how monumental the discovery of Giganotosaurus was then. Tyrannosaurus had been holding the crown for "history's biggest predator" for nearly a century, then at the peak of the whole JP/Dinosaur Renaissance era it was dethroned! I was lucky enough to live near a museum that had both Giga and Rex on display, so Dominion was like a wish come true. Granted, Giga's time in the limelight turned out to be rather short -- suddenly there was a whole host of contenders for the throne, including the ever-changing tyranno-slaying Spinosaurus -- so I appreciate this video acting as an update on a dino I've kinda forgotten about.

My personal head canon is that the Prologue is not meant to be taken as literal truth. My reasoning for this is a strange inversion of the oft quoted Dr. Wu quote from JW about how nothing in JW is natural. Ramsey explicitly states that BioSyn at least can extract 100% of an extinct animal's genome, heavily implying that their creatures at least can be more accurate than InGen's / Masrani's. However, the Pteranodon and Ankylosaurus in the Prologue look exactly the same as InGen's / Masrani's. This gives leeway, I'd say, to argue that the Prologue is not meant to be an actual literal flashback to what the Cretaceous was like in the JP universe. Of course, the behind the scenes reasoning is way simpler. Since this scene is short and was cut from the final theatrical cut of Dominion anyway, I'm not surprised that they didn't create more accurate versions just for this scene.

This is fantastic. With lots of details. Your Giganotosaurus design is spectacular. It is as if the Prehistoric Planet team designed it. That is top notched. Love the Carcharodontosaurus cameo as well. Lots of people find these giant Theropods generic, but they are actually have very interesting characteristics and are versatile and efficient predators that do not need brute force to survive.

I would've at least taken out the back spikes and osteoderms of the prehistoric #Giganotosaurus from JW, that way it wouldn't confuse the audience and they would still understand that that dinosaur and the one in the present are the same but with some differences from the cloning process. I understand not being able to create a complete different model for the prehistoric giga since that could definitely confuse casual viewers as to why they're completely different from one scene to the next, but it would've been a neat detail to at least make them a bit more different while still recognizable.

They could just do them in very different colors, you have to understand they both convergently evolved a similar body shape like small arms and big head, it's not their fault they's similar, it would be like a movie where a leopard and a jaguar fight but you put saber tooths on the jaguar and also some horns to differenciate

I’ve never had any problems with the dinosaur designs in the franchise but the Gigi’s design kinda bothered me a bit because it looks nothing like one, it looks like a Mapusaurus-Concavenator hybrid.
