We visited a screw factory in Dongguan, China to show how screws are made. Many of these are for the PC hardware industry, like standoffs and thumb screws.
Ad: Buy Sennheiser's PC37X on Massdrop (geni.us/gdAHF)
Find our factory tour playlist here: • How PC Liquid Coolers ...
This is another factory tour with Cooler Master, but it is a third-party factory responsible for screw manufacturing. Screws start as a steel wire and get fed through various tap and die machines until they eventually become the hardware we use daily.

it is cool tho bcus those screws were made by a different machine, which was made by a different machine etc etc, then before automation someone made the first screw making machine by hand w hacksaws and drills and files etc and those tools were made by ppl using other hand tools and on and on back through centuries and millennia until literally every manufactured item can be traced back to the first stone hand axe like 2 million years ago, even the most advanced 7nm CPU is a direct descendant of a piece of flint with a sharp edge chipped into it. and the CPU and the pointy stone are both made of silicon.

Hey that's what I used to do. Nice to see it getting some love. Ran 4 die 4 blow 1/2in sacama among many others. Depending on the size machine you can make way more then 20k a day. Also the machine doesn't compress the wire. The wire is made to to size using a draw die, and wire machine before even getting to the header. One to take out any irregularities in size, we are talking 0.001in in wire size can make a difference in the final part, And two, so you can order one size wire, and make it work for many size jobs. The parts you where given are called the cut off, impact, upset and final. The most manual part as well is the machine set up. Welding wire takes a few min. Changing all the tooling and setup can take an hour or so depending on if its a sample part, and what tooling needs to be worked on, ect. I would pay to see someone fully set up a 6 die header in 5 min, im calling bs on that one.

I love seeing stuff like this. My dad worked in a factory and I had a summer job in a different factory (and industry) one summer and seeing the level of automation was mind blowing. I was in awe the first time I saw it. I wondered how stuff like this could operate without breaking down, but it turns out that it does break down, a lot. Most of the workers were tech guys whose only job was to make sure they went back online asap when they broke down.

Worked for a precision engineering company in the Far North of Scotland in 1980, we made around 250k screws per week plus other threaded inserts for electrical plugs/sockets/fittings we also made parts in stainless steel and aluminium. The screws etc. were fed by magazines that took between 10 and 20 3m bars of various diameter. The noise was indescribable :) I turned various parts out of aluminium that the automatic machines could not do so easily. Well it paid for my flying lessons, and the factory was within walking distance of the flight school :D Thanks for sharing this video it brought a lot of happy memories back.

How likely is it that these machines were originally American or European and got shipped over when production was moved? I watched a documentary about an entire giant coke factory being disassembled and moved from Germany to China (Losers and Winners, 2006), so moving a few machines like this seems like it'd be straightforward.

These machines are a modern day automated lathe. They are literally the greatest invention ever made, and track the explosion of human civilisation perfectly. Once the first lathe was made, this led to advancements in technology that cannot be ignored. There is practically nothing we can see today that isn't part realised by lathe technology. You are never a meter away from something that a lathe made or made by a machine containing parts a lathe made.

It is very interesting to see how these products are made. I have been curious about it for years and now I can finally see it. Too bad that it probably won't happen that we see how CPU's and GPU's are being made (just the implementation of what has been designed, the designs are way beyond the comprehension of almost all viewers). Too many secrets which they don't want to get out. Gamers Nexus, if you ever come in the Neterlands, Belgium, Northern France or Germany, how about a tour in ASML to see the lithography? They probably are willing to show some interesting stuff. Maybe the company which does the etching and deposition of metals on those wafers might be willing to show a lot of their process. I don't expect Intel, TSMC, Samsung and GF to show a lot but it would be mighty interesting. In Belgium you could take a look at IMEC.
