Based on these questions alone, one can certainly make the argument that "staccato" correlates with S preference whereas "smooth" correlates with N preference. However, these questions all deal with the external world (external objects and sights, like colors). In questions (which I'll discuss in another video) that pertain to the internal world (personal meanings and connections), the staccato group appears more intuitive than the smooth group since both groups are being forced to use Pi, Ni and Si respectively.

This is a great contrast between the two: Se manipulates concrete physical objects, Ne manipulates perspective of concepts. Also I love this statement: Se-Ni the use of each actions count as one purpose; Ne-Si each purposes of concepts count as one use.

This made me even more confused whether I'm more Ni or Ne. I also related a lot to the Se responses - yet, I related A LOT to INFP and the Fi-Si loop.

When you brought up the "colors that start with 'a'" I thought of "apple green" but then said "wait is that even a real color?" and then I thought of "azul" and how maybe that could count because it's just in a different language. But yeah how you said Se-users want "things to count" or basically be verified by objective reality, that's true with me as an ISFP. Also, for thinking of what to do with a pen, I definitely thought of all the different physical uses like obviously drawing and writing (I see them as two different things), the pen flip thing, disassembling it, throwing it or using it to stab someone, but I also thought you can use it to write notes on your hand which is something I've done in the past, so yeah, your research seems accurate to me as an Se user :3

Just a note questioning the legitimacy* of the crayons (its colour naming* ) might as well be Ti-leaning and not a necessity to align the conceptual with the existing "reality" the ti would still question its "permissivity" through both lenses. As a fellow INTJ I obviously appreciated the point of view Alex provided, but I think you having to explain concepts by yourself has lead to way more structured videos (so more informative in a sense) rather than more interactional videos in the past, which might tend to go off on tangents more. Brilliant! Your next step would be to do a double-blind study. You get a group of participants and you have their eye movement patterns checked by one group of researchers, but you don't tell the participants what those patterns are until after they write an essay on, say, a question like you presented in the video. Then another group of researchers, who do not know the eye movement patterns of the participants, will judge the essays as exhibiting either extraverted sensing or extraverted intuition. Then after that, you combine it all and see what you've got. A confirming result will be one in which the group of researchers checking the essays are consistently able to predict what the eye movement patterns of the participants will be, based only on reading their essays. If you do a study like this and get results that confirm your hypothesis, then you've got something here that the scientific community may be interested in!

I love Dave and Shan but definitely you have a better understanding of the Ne-Si and Ti-Fe axes than they have. As an ENTP is pretty frustrating that they barely speak about my axes and when they do it they sound so awkward and I can not relate with their definitions. They have a real good system but need to invite people who have different axes. On the video about Fe and two people speaking about Rihanna they totally missed it and we all Ti users gave our opinion in the comment section. I could understand better my Fe in the comments. They need to be more open-minded.

I’m an Ni user and I have a friend that’s an Ne user. We got into a long debate one time about whether using boxed cake mix to bake a cake counts as “cooking” or “assembly”. I said that it wasn’t because they did not use “essential” baking skills like measuring each ingredient. She said that it was because the end result is no different from a chef. I view all elements, concepts, aspects of this universe as concrete/inherent and as humans we give it meaning but she views all elements, concepts, aspects of this universe as unknowable/flexible (she’s agnostic) and she thinks human should think of things as concrete based on what is known/what information is given, hence the all cakes are made equal arguement.

Ahh~ so~ interesting! I remember how I first responded to the train dilema a long time ago when I was in highschool. I think I was much more like an ISTP back then. I couldn't really grasp it as a concept and idea. I kept asking questions like, 'who are the people?' 'Why/how would I be in this kind of situation?' And about the physical realities so I could imagine myself there. But if any more info was given then my answer would change. When given no more info, I said I would go on the track with 1 person, and even if that was someone I knew, I would choose that one, because of the quantity. It either wasnt made clear, or I didn't even consider about how one option involved doing something and the other meant I didn't do anything and then potentially was less to blame. Just being asked the question really unsettled me, I think because I was imagining it as real and felt a little like I had a part in the death of others. And because I couldn't come up with a good answer and because it was hard to settle on an answer. - ISTJ (?)

ISFP here. Agree very much with what you said. As a FI dom, regarding the ethical dilemma question, I didn't even want to go through the optimizing thought process to see who will get a shorter sentence. I rather try to first find out more information that was not defined in the question (e.g. Was I the one who committed the crime?) . With the colors, I definitely would not have thought of "Apple Green" as an answer and for the pen question, my answers were all the standard functions like write, draw, strike out, underline, etc.

This is fascinating to me. I come from an experimental psychology background, so the only questions I have are about methods and analysis. Basically, how big are the sample sizes, did you use random selection and random assignment to avoid the potential for selection bias, what population did you sample from, and what quantitative analysis methods were used? Did you use significance testing? I wish I had come across this stuff when I was struggling to find a thesis idea for my M.A. in experimental psychology. I ended up running out of time and had to withdraw as I was unable to think of anything I felt enough passion about to follow through (I was too focused on grandiose experiments beyond the resources of my little university and had to keep going back to the drawing board). The mundane thesis projects my fellow grad students were doing were completely unsatisfactory to me and I refused to stoop so low...at the expense of getting my master's degree. I regret nothing, though, except the $150,000 in student loans I racked up. Anyway, good stuff! I look forward to seeing more of these videos. Who knows, maybe I'll go back and try again with MBTI as my focus. Experimental psychology can be so much fun when you have the right inspiration.

In regards to the pen question, this is something I've done before as a creative exercise but with a paper clip. I sometimes do it just for fun and am very good at coming up lots of off the wall and really out there purposes for stuff. My ideas become more fantasy like where literally anything goes that I would usually right off as only fantasy. However when it's the known purpose of the exercise is to get as many creative possibilities as you can in a minute I feel like the Ni Se can kick some serious ass with that type of thinking if they don't hold them self back.

Wow! You're writing a book too?? Awesome! All power to you! This is really, really, really insightful. My mind is really digging it. I'm pleasantly surprised to find your summary of Se(Ni) vs. Ne(Si) to be quite similar with how I've been approaching it in my book. What's particularly interesting is your phrasing that the Ne type will adapt their worldview to the question, while Se will not (perhaps even adapting the question to their worldview?). One way to express the difference here is that Ne/Si is on the whole more "receptive" to the external world, while Se/Ni is more "assertive." And that is because Ne (being similar to Fe) has an element that in the past I've tried to describe as "social," because from the Ni/Se point of view, Ne seems to take the question on its own terms, cooperating with the questioner. But Se never takes the question on its own terms -- it always asserts its own Se terms against the question, to see whether it proves fruitful or just breaks. I've often gotten frustrated when I'm asked certain questions, because I know people want me to answer it within a particular paradigm, or from a particular perspective, but it is often just simply impossible for me to adapt myself in that way --- it wouldn't be "honest." I have to answer it from "the correct" angle, which is the angle I perceive as most concrete and straightforward. Your findings about how people responded to the trolley problem --- good heavens it is soooo insightful. Because I remember being in philosophy class when they brought up the trolley problem, and I remember being so frustrated by it, because I resented the teacher contriving of a situation that had never actually happened and was not a regular occurrence, just to get me to take a position on it, and then act as though the position I took reflected how I would act in the rest of reality. Obviously, the trolley problem is merely an illustration meant to get at an underlying abstract idea, but my Se rebels against this, saying that the abstract idea doesn't correspond or intersect with reality in any meaningful way. What you need to know is not the various abstract approaches to the problem, but the concrete conditions wherein the problem takes place. These conditions may seem to be impertinent, but they always become quite pertinent when one actually lives things out in reality. Of course, I completely flipflop my views once my Ti/Fe steps in. Which is why this is so fascinating to me.

Your video aligns with what I have seen. I think the presence of Te can further ground what SeNi perceives or Ti give flight to NeSi perceives. I know as an INTJ, my creativity is much better with a problem to solve, and I am more likely to explore paths where I can see a way forward, even if I can’t explain why. I find with xNTPs, a goal to achieve and known techniques are not limitations, but logical anomalies are. Both extremes are a bit of a blessing and a curse. That leaves xNFPs and xNFJs in the middle, where perceiving and thinking pull to the middle.

7:11 did you check for colorblindness in those people prior to the experiment? Because males have a higher tendency to develop colorblindness due to the XY chromosome configuration. Hope this helps

Just a small comment - have you perhaps considered that in the case of the train, whether you ask about who the people are could have more to do with the judging functions than the perceiving ones (how valuable are they to the society, do you have any emotional connection with them, etc.)?

It's funny, when you originally asked the first question about the tram, I immediately had the same answer as the Se/Ni user, but when you started talking about the pen I had exactly the same interpretation as the Ne/Si user. I've been looking at socionics model G and this model makes sense as to why I had both (TeSx because I use Si and Se) You should check out Ben Vaserlan youtube, it's really interesting.

This video was very interesting! I'm trying to figure out which Pe function I'm using. In the case of the trolley problem, my first thought was: do I have the right to change the destiny of these people? Is changing the fatal destiny of one person who wasn't supposed to die, and save 5 people who were supposed to die, better than doing nothing? Followed by a debate in my head regarding "taking action": in both cases we could say I have killed someone (1 or 5 people). If I pull the lever, I will have killed someone actively. If I don't do anything, I would have killed 5 people passively. Which action was then the "less worst" ?

For the pen use, I listed a couple for each category, and one completely off-the-wall use haha: writing (SeNi), back-scratcher (SeNi), something to get at those little bits of junk that get stuck between your phone case (NeSi), extension of arm reach to get something under a couch (Si?), and then out of nowhere: something you can drop when walking past a cute girl to gauge attraction and see if she'll pick it up and give it to you and maybe have a conversation-starter (NeSi?) hahaha

What about writing, drawing, anti-stress (if it is a tap pen), as a page marker/clip and as a toy plane? Would that be Se?

I just want to clarify something real quick about something you said in the video. You mentioned that an Ne user claimed that a pen's purpose could be to fill a pen holder but and then went on to describe how this blew your mind and actually makes sense. I understand that this was something said in a brainstorming exercise, but for the purpose of thinking I would like to claim that this is actually not true. I started by wondering the definition of purpose, to which I decided upon the google definition which was: Purpose: the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists. upon accepting this definition, I realized that this logical relation actually cannot exist since a pen existed before a pen holder existed, therefore a penholder's existence depends on the prior existence of a pen but not vice versa. So while the penholder's purpose is to house a pen, it actually cannot be that a pen's purpose is to be inside of a pen holder since it does not satisfy the definition i.e a pen's creation was not for being housed in a pen holder, unless of course you create a new pen with its new purpose being to be housed inside of a pen holder. Does that mean it is still a pen? hahaha im kidding, I think it does. but anyways, I just wanted to share my thought process on this little part of the video!! thanks for everything you're doing, love the videos!!!!

I have a question. Which types of people (I'm guessing it correlates to certain cognitive axes, perhaps in certain positions?) do you find to be most combative with multiple choice questions and resistant to selecting from limited answers? For context, let's say it's a personality test where they have to choose between two options and indicate the one that describes them "more accurately" (not necessarily completely accurately) or what they are like "most of the time" (not necessarily all of the time). I've found that some people make answering these kinds of questions extremely difficult. They either say that they can't answer because they don't agree with either option (in which case you're supposed to pick "the lesser of two evils," whichever you disagree with least) or because they agree with both options (in which case you're supposed to go with your gut for whichever resonates more closely, even if it's only by a small margin). Even after explaining the way the test works, how the questions are tallied, and the concept of "most correct" as opposed to "correct," it's like they still can't follow the prompt and want to skip any question that isn't worded in a way that is exactly how they would word it. It's really baffling to me, because I, too, overthink questions and pick apart their wording to the Nth degree, but I am still able to answer questions because I understand how the test works, how to follow directions, and can usually glean the intended meaning behind options, even if they're not worded exactly the way I would word them or don't present optimal choices. The way you described Se-users trying to work around the confines of the hypothetical situation to choose options that weren't given (but might exist in reality), like for the trolley question, reminded me somewhat of this behavior. On the other hand, I could see inferior Ne having trouble making the thematic connections between similar sensory examples (those connections might help a higher Ne user realize how their own experiences are similar to those presented by a certain option, even if they have never experienced that specific example). When aspirational, inferior Ne might want to brainstorm possibilities that aren't options, and otherwise, inferior Ne might even be stubbornly resistant to any unfamiliar choices/concepts altogether. But I don't know if it's all about perceiving. I could also see Fi users being reluctant to identify with answers that don't feel authentically resonant with their sense of self. And then on the flip side, I can see Ti users picking apart the wording and semantics of the question and being bothered by questions that seem to contain "errors" or "wrong" options... Yet somehow I see Ti as being more willing to resolve to choose the "most correct" option, than Fi users would be willing to choose the "most authentic" option. Does that make sense? I'm not even sure if I can explain why, but I've just noticed people on the Fi/Te axis seeming more worried about feeling like being categorized puts them "in a box." I could be wrong. What are your thoughts? I guess, namely, which types do you think have these difficulties with multiple choice options (especially when it's testing their own cognition or values, rather than knowledge of some external system/thing)?

For the prisoners dilemma, always blame the other person. If you are silent, you have a chance between 1 year and 3 years depending on what the other person does, but if you blame them, you have a chance between 0 years and 2 years depending on what the other person does.

For the pen question, if my answers were : 1. Writing 2. Drawing 3. Using as a ruler (I’ve seen people use pens as a ruler and when I didn’t have a ruler with me I used a pen because of what I’ve seen) 4. Using as a weapon (I’ve been poked with a pen once and it hurt) And I couldn’t really think of a 5th function, would that be SeNi or NeSi ? I feel like I used both because SeNi used practical uses but the Si of NeSi recalled past events. NeSi gave the pen a purpose that’s different from the norm (with the pen-ruler, which isn’t common), but SeNi used physical actions… But again, maybe that’s because I only said uses that I’ve seen before or heard of, instead of making my own uses. But is that SeNi or NeSi? For the train question, I kept switching my answer. I looked at how both sides would feel if the other side was crushed by the train. At first I was like “The one person should be crushed, it leads to less deaths.” But then I thought “But that would be unfair for that person. They died alone!” and I felt sorry. Then, I thought “If the five people got crushed, they would all die together and their deaths would be less lonely.” But right after that I was like “But the one person that didn’t get crushed must feel so sorry for being alive, for sacrificing all of these people. They must think ‘I should’ve died instead! My life is nothing compared to theirs.” So if the one person is fine with sacrificing themselves for other people, they should be the one who gets crushed, but if they’re happy being alive and don’t really care about others, then the group of people should be crushed. Interesting how I thought more about the feelings of the one person instead of the group of people… I think I might be more empathetic with people that I can relate to, so people who are alone/lonely, who give that feeling at least. Here I think it was NeSi because I thought about others’ points of views before mine like you said. For the colors that start with A, I only said “Almond” and I wasn’t too bothered to say more because I was 1. tired and 2. had no idea because English isn’t my first language. Almond was the first one to come into mind because I think I’ve heard that color before. But here I used SeNi because I wanted to say colors that actually exist and count and ones that I have heard of before.

I watched this after an Ni vs Si video because I still couldn’t decide whether I’m INFJ or ISFJ. I immediately knew that I have no Ne inside at all so therefore I must be INFJ because of my inferior function.

I’m more Ni/estj but everything I value is related to it’s use. I don’t see anything worth knowing that isn’t utilized, I don’t believe in work for work-sake if not attached to goals, etc.

I DO like your approach in the sense of "throwing out a concept to the public" for opening pathways of extracting feedback.
