Episode: 19 - BMW M3
Pound for pound BMW M3's are one of the most affordable, stylish, and pony packed cars you can buy to this day. Specifically the 2009 M3. Which MOTORTREND called at the time, "The worlds greatest all around car," which makes this appraisal that much more interesting. In this episode of "The Appraiser," Vin Anatra from HOONIGAN brings his 2009 BMW M3 by for Colin to put a price on it. This appraisal will be tricky because Vin has almost $30,000 of performance upgrades into it. Will these upgrades increase the value and ease of sale? Will this 2009 M3 stand the test of time and hold its value? Make sure to stick around until the end and find out.

Exactly, it's all about a vision you have for a car. None of those parts, Recaros, Volks, brakes will not be on the car when sold, and it will be haha. I would def sell the carbon intake and maybe even exhaust separately then keep what you want. Swapping and selling parts is part of the game and if you aren't you are losing money.

I’ve always preferred the e90 sedan m3s vs the e92 coupes-the side lines and tail look much better. It is the true heir of the e39 m5. My dream spec is an interlagos blau 6mt slicktop with the comp package and w/o the nav. Of your mods, I’d have the eventuri intake, a comparable exhaust, comparable coil-overs for track, cheaper apex wheels that can fit 285s, and a cheaper brake kit. I know guys that would appreciate and use your spec at a track.

Modding value comes from the satisfaction that the owner has something unique, or you've improved the car from the factory. I'm almost $20K on mods for my 12 Cayman S, but compared to a 981 GT4, I spent $30K less overall and driving a car which has slightly less power and is just as fun. I call it a win, win.

Went down the same path with my e92 M3. I thought about a new 718 GTS, with its last of a dying breed NA engine. But then I realized I already have a great car with a last of a dying breed NA engine. With only 27k miles on it. Paid for. Upgraded brakes, suspension, and a few engine mods and saved $50k in the process.

Surprised no-one really, modifications and options makes car more desirable and easier to sell, but they do not increase the value of the car. So in quick sale situation it probably helps the price little bit as it can be listed and sold quickly at standard price without discount, where car without mods or modded badly would require to be discounted to be sold. Very rarely mods actually adds value, sometimes there are some mods where they automatically get their moneys worth, I guess bearings is one, sometimes wheels are as well, for certain cars there are certain desirable wheels and everyone knows that is extra cost. But things like brakes and exhaust - that adds very little value when selling. In short it helps bottom line, not the top line. It has always been like that I will always be like it.

It was 31K stock, with rod bearings at the end of their lives. Him just replacing the bearings kept his sale price at that if he were to revert to stock and sell it. He's 100% profiting.

And lastly, it’s not the rod bearings on an s65, the throttle actuators fail more than rod bearings do, especially on pre face lift cars. Just further going to show this appraiser is a full on clown.

There's almost no car where you put that kind of money into it and get it back... Why is this even a video? Like, duh dude...

Cars = lose money, except for very rare exceptions (and those are not necessarily brand specific). Few cars gain value beyond the cost of maintenance, insurance.. People still buy and sell them and wonder what they sell for, so there is still a point to this video.
