I dont know if this was in the comics or not but i always had a personal head canon after playing the shadow the hedgehog game. Since Maria is a robotnik id assume she was a prodigy in the field of automotive engineering and even was key in the creation of shadows iconic jet skates. This is why shadow has such a fascination with driving and working on vehicle as it was a passion of his lost friend.
