I think that if Shonen Jump (or any manga magazine) cancels a manga, it should give the rights back to the author, so the author can continue the story independently with a niche audience.

You pay your general contractor to deliver your entire job, he pays the concrete guys, the carpenter, the electricisn, etc. That would just give them less control iver their own team

@@boredfangerrude8759 the GC includes his costs for sub contractors in the price you pay. What you're saying is you want corporate SJ to decide who your assistant is and not you. I assume you don't want to work a full time job hiring a bunch of different teams and coordinating them, you want to pay a GC to do that. Do you want Sony to decide what producers you're allowed to work with on your album, no you want them to give you a big bag of money to make an album and you go from their. Same thing for an editor of a traditional book. Its not a perfect analogy as there's only one SJ so you're not just a contractor setting your own price (though you could), but that has everything to do with the compensation and not the structure. The only thing what your advocating for necessarily dictates is less editorial control for the author. If they're paying for your assistant they're picking them and youre getting less money

@2o3ief He doesn't have to be patient paying them out of his pocket to decide who assists him..a respected enough mangaka would be afforded that privilege. Besides, it should be industry standard. They already under pay the Mangaka , who overwork the point of giving them permanent physical damage and a company that earns billions can't afford to pay for an adequate number of assistants?

15:20 colored pages are also more expensive to print. It may be that it may cost either the publisher or the author more to make those pages, so the manga has to be one of the most popular for that to make sense.

Kishimoto's biggest mistake was not having the ENTIRE story planned out. He was forced to keep making Naruto and wanted to end the story SEVERAL TIMES, but was rejected each time until chapter 700. What's worse is that he just came up with plot points and powers on the spot, which really messed with both the world-building and power level balances. We all knew he was going to give his self-insert Naruto the win in the end, but he had to nerf Sasuke into the ground in order to make it feel like Naruto could even compete. Kurama has HALF the Juubi's power, and then it turns out Naruto only needs HALF of Kurama's per to beat 7 of the other tailed beasts... I'm sorry, but WHAT THE F...

This is what happened to BLEACH too. Kubo wanted to end it, SJ told him no, so he had to pull more out of his ass and the fans decided the manga was garbage after that. It's such a shame that mangakas are treated this way.

Most Shonen are not planned out,One Piece is different because even though a lot is improvised Oda still has a plan for many characters and lore aspects, he also said he had the whole ending planned out so everything before that point is designed to lead up to that end without real contradiction.

The scaling was already pretty fucked up before it. The previous edo tensei jinchuriki and their tailed beasts charge up a tailed beast bomb to fire at bee and naruto, but Naruto in Kurama Mode was able to utilize a single tailed beast bomb to negate all theirs? And people said Sasuke had plot armor when the MC was gifted with plot bs kurama providing naruto with infinite chakra so chakra drain isn't a thing for him. Also, KCM still doesn't make any sense lore wise at all. It wasn't even earned or described for the reason why as to it was different. It just looks like a cheap SSJ ripoff that looks worse and stripped of all the lore surrounding it. That's why KCM sucks. Other Shonen forms weren't exclusive to the MC like SSJ or Bankai, or other characters could utilize the powers, such as Haki in One Piece. It stands to reason why the fourth war even before its main stage still sucked ass. Everything was actually consistent in the FKS. Sasuke beating Danzo make sense. It still utilized strategy. But then Kishimoto somehow had no clue how to write a fucking war arc or actual war

Different publishers have different ways of making manga, but especially the way Shonen Jump introduced in this video is dubbed the "Jump System" and is very famous in Japan. In both good and bad ways. This has been said and controversial even in Japan too for a long time. The Jump System is very well known in Japan, where popularity and numbers are the top priority, and unpopular works are quickly and mercilessly discontinued. In order to gain popularity, the editor in charge and the publisher itself heavily intervene with the mangaka . The editor, editor-in-chief, and publisher are relentless in their criticism and guidance, especially when the work is not popular. It is very common for the mangaka to be unable to decide on the direction and content of the story, and to have the editor change it. This makes us wonder if mangakas are drawing what they really want to draw. It is sometimes said sarcastically that a manga is a collaboration between the manga artist and the editor, rather than the work of mangaka. And there are criticisms that the content of manga produced under Jump system may become somewhat similar and that this system is destroying unique works that have not gained immediate popularity, but still have interesting qualities. Popular manga are now not allowed to be finished by the publishers even if they want to. I do not know about overseas publications, but in the Japanese version of "Dr. Slump" (the previous one before Dragon Ball by Akira Toriyama), there are many instances of Akira Toriyama scribbling in the margins of the pages, "I want to quit, I want to quit," "But they won't let me quit," or"Torishima is horrible. “ And we often see such complaints in the the author’s status report column of the book. After he managed to quit "Dr. Slump," "Dragon Ball" soon followed, and ironically, because Akira Toriyama was such a talented artist, this too became a hit, making it impossible for him to quit again . Although not as often as in the case of Dr. Slump, he sometimes said "I want to quit here" in Dragon Ball as well. But in every case, it continued /was forced to continue. If Akira Toriyama had been able to quit when he wanted to quit, as he wished, he would have lived longer in exchange for "Dr. Slump" and "Dragon Ball" ending with very short, little-known works. Until recently, it was common knowledge that mangakas die early because it is a very demanding profession. Even today, it is not unusual to die early . We often see mangakas stop drawing manga after finishing a single work, especially since weekly serialization is so demanding.

There are a bunch of factors, some artists don't want big internet presence, some just don't have enough and attaching the name of your work with a big publisher like Shueisha it basically guarantees that you'll have an audience if you have a good story. Publishers also cover a bunch of other things like where to host the series, physical releases, marketing other products related to the series, translations, even anime adaptations are more likely to happen when you're being published by someone else.

Just see how Togashi has not released a single chapter since years, its the most antisocial being on the planet and already has a 3.1 million twitter followers. Nice video Dygo. I really enjoyed your way of explaining things. You could do a video about how manga authors earn money from intellectual rights and merchandise. Like, Akira Toriyama got a imense fortune for years just in products associated with dragon ball like videogames. Kishimoto is virtually still the richest mangaka in the world in brand value, I think.

Yeah early it was good choice on the editor to keep Neji alive because of what we seen Sasuke do to keep readers interesting, but seeing how Shippuden pan out the Kishimoto killing off Neji was unnecessary and it left a plot hole and unanswered questions up into the next series which it might been a good idea if the editor was involved during his decisions and for Might Guy should've been killed of because of the build up of using the eighth gate.

It is weakly magazine with strict deadlines. Without deadlines, there will be no content to publish every week. Within the allotted time, the mangaka needs to come up with story, drawing, and any changes/re-write based on editor's suggestions. Rinse repeat for the next deadline. This is why most mangaka work so many hours everyday with no break / vacation.

Wow, this was a really insightful video, I learnt somethings idk about the manga industry. But on Kishimoto specifically gosh, the editors did do a good job on everyone not being animals lol, but on other areas they made Naruto suffer, like the world building could've been so much better and the side characters could've had more memorable moments. I think your rewrite does a good job fixing those aspects and I'm excited for the next part.

It's not just the editor it's the stupid weekly manga kishimoto has to meet the deadline kishimoto said he had to cut down a lot of things to meet the deadline just look what happens to hidan arc that arc was supposed to be longer but the editor was rushing him end it because of time and kishimoto was in the hospital that why the arc ended that way tye other problem is the studio who changed a lot of things in the manga just look what they did to sakura they cut a lot of her dielog and moments in the manga because they love hinata so much sakura waa supposed to end with Naruto she has more screen time and moments with Naruto than hinata hinata barely exists in the manga the only reason she ended with Naruto because she was popular character because of fillers they probably forced him to change it

The most important thing to the editor's contributions was the character of Sasuke, without Sasuke most of the plot and conflict with Naruto would not happen except the pain stuff( since Sasuke wasn't a main factor in that arc and more focused on the relationship between Jiraya and Naruto rather than his bond with Sasuke which was the main story's backbone).

@@justinarzola4584 honestly yes, Sasuke really makes up 40-50% of the story in Naruto and he is a great character, I'd say he's one of my favourites (although I haven't really thought who they are, he is up there) and his arc and relationships most importantly his and Naruto's are what completes the story.

Kishimoto was asked why he put naruto and Hinata together and I quote," I thought naruto and Hinata were perfect for eachother because Hinata been with naruto since the beginning and she never cared about reputations". in another one he states he based Naruto off himself and hinata's Character of his wife, who at first wanted naruto and Sakura to get married and she was pissed at kishimoto until him explained it too her. They only show Hinata in filler, and having more screentime means nothing.

Another point to add . Weekly shounen jump published using recycled papers, thus the quality paper , the ink color are reduced except the cover as to reduce the cost and can be easily dumped away. The paper usually mixed of yellowish, brownish or reddish. That's why they will publish Tankobon or Volumes manga for a particular manga title with higher paper quality , good inking for collections. Also WSJ still only considered Japanese voters for manga popularity ranking , eventhough Shueisha had published digitally in mangaplus . Thus , reason why certain manga which portrayed about Japanese culture or unpopular internationally , still rank up higher than the rest .

This was a pretty good informative video about how the popular shonen manga industry works. Have to agree with that Death Note instance of it becoming tasteless when L dies. Though must admit I always feel romance, a slice of life, family and other drama mangas are the ones that catch my eye.

The author of Tokyo Ghoul had a similar contract as HxH's author with his Manga Choujin X although now it is a website only publication. He was rushed to finish Tokyo Ghoul: Re and that's why he chose that contract.

This is why Bakuman always confused me. In the story, when Mashiro and Takagi wanted to get rid of their current editor who was pushing them to write what he wanted which was comedy, they went to talk to the Editor-In-Chief of the magazine. The problem was someone has already beat them to it. Another Mangaka under the same editor wanted the same thing Mashiro and Takagi did, a new editor that allowed them to write what they wanted. The Editor-In-Chief told the boy that nobody gets special treatment and he will keep the same troublesome editor. Later on after being challenged by their rival, Mashiro and Takagi worked up enough nerve to talk with the Editor-In-Chief, when they did he told them that if they wanted to stop their current serialization, they were allowed. However, they would be banned from Shonen Jump. He didn't respect authors that abandoned their series. What?!! I don't know if this was bias from the creators of Bakuman who also created Death Note, but Shonen Jump in our current reality has a bad reputation for canceling mangas early on because of poor sale numbers among other reasons, so for these prominent artists to make a manga where Shonen Jump higher-ups don't like creators that give up on their project is...utter bullshit! Plus, you made them give up on their series by allowing their bias editor to continue giving horrible advice and not listening to what the creators wanted to do. It's so aggravating! Ugh. Propaganda made to trick people into believing Shonen Jump has morals and ethics, when in reality they care more about numbers and money.

Whats weird is that Kishimoto made only $20-$30 million dollars on his series naruto while Oda made like $200-$250 million on One Piece. Like wtf with this discrepancy. I'm a big One Piece fan, and I think Kishimoto is very much underpaid for how much popular his creation is.

Yeah people forget how massive Naruto is as a franchise. It's up there with Dragon Ball and One Piece in terms of size. Every week chapters were battling with OP to be #1 or #2. Hell after Dragon Ball fever here in the US, Naruto picked up that torch and ran with it. The fact he hadn't made more is insane. Hell if Naruto were being released today with its level of popularity from then to now, it would trump JJK, Chainsaw Man, maybe MHA (people under estimate how big that series is too), and others. That's how big Naruto was.

@@tyratooOP Yeah, new anime fans right now don't know how big Naruto was in the 2000s. Naruto as a franchise is worth $11 Billion right now, and Kishimoto only got $25 Million out of it. I guess when it comes to editors thats working on a manga or anime with you l think they should choose their editors carefully and make sure their editors will either give some usefull feedback or you know they will help enhance a scene

It's a matter of trust, really. IIRC Toryama was very good friends with his editor, and they really helped each other, even with the disagreements, Cell's design and all. On the other hand, there's this thing with the Bleach writer being a massive prick and the editors being way too restricting, so they never saw eye-to-eye and the Manga suffered a nosedive in quality.

I am quite surprised at the stupidity of shueisha to cancel kishimoto’s new manga only because it wasn’t doing good at the beginning, like you have literally one of the best selling mangaka of all time and you really cant give him any time to develop his story? I speak as someone who knows nothing of business or anything like that but come on, Naruto made you more than a bit of money. Such a waste and very disrespectful.

Kishimoto in a interview already stated he wanted to end naruto multiple times but shonen jump and his editor never let him. because of shonen jump deadlines he never gets to add any real world building in Naruto, due to deadlines once again his editor makes him end the hidan arc early and his editor made him skip arcs that he wanted to add and go straight to chunin exam's... which is funny because he couldn't even add everything in the Sasuke versus naruto fight wasn't all kishimoto wanted. Kishimoto wanted his friend who's been with him since the beginning of Naruto to be his successor, and he was horrible so kishimoto took back over during the isshiki arc, which is fair he wants to see basically another one of his stories succeed. It's more of kishimoto was a slave who was basically forced to continue a one of the most popular manga and anime series in history, just for money. But that's just me

People complain about series endings being garbage. If you don’t support Shonen Jump because of this then their sales will drop and they will be forced to listen to you and make changes to their company. It’s supply and demand. I know that’s not at all realistic but it’s true. A lot of series from that company have bad endings and people hate them. It’s the publishers fault and if you didn’t buy new manga or watch new anime from them because of their reputation of forcing bad endings on all of their series then they would lose money and be forced to change. A few examples are Naruto, The Promised Neverland, and Death Note.

wow never knew that about death note but i always tought the series chanegd after ells death i also didnt like the replacements.same for lights death. it felt zo out of character. but now i understand the author was forced to right more. it wont come out the same if you dont feel inspired to do something. i always had the same feeling with dbz buu saga. it doesnt feel like the the rest of the serie. felt like a big middle finger from toriyama to shonen. and how i interpet it it feels liks somewhere nearing the end of the saga. he was enjoying himself again

You say that the editors and the company itself forces mangaka to make changes, continue, or end the story, but how do they do that? Can’t the mangaka just say that he wants to end the series and let that be that. Also, the editors can’t force the mangaka to do as they say, can they? The mangaka can’t just end the series and quit the magazine? If the company wants to cancel a series, can’t the author just continue his series in another magazine instead of rushing the ending? If that isn’t possible, why doesn’t the mangaka write the last chapter in the magazine as if the story were to continue, and then continue the story in a different magazine with a different name. An example would be Shaman King Flowers and Shaman King the Super Star. They’re both the same story but just with a different name due to Flowers being cancelled.
