Simona Halep is not the flashiest player on the WTA Tennis Tour but she definitely is one of the most consistent. Just like her forehand!
In this video, I will show you how she generates a lot of power and rotation and why it doesn't matter that she has a big wind-up.

Fantastic analysis! Very informative, thanks Meike! Been working on my forehand recently and definitely going to pay more attention to (most of) these fundamentals....I can't do the loading from the sport chair obviously, but the take back and contact point, as well as the finish *thumbs up*

Meike, does she get into her "lock in" position early in her swing? It looks like some pros do it earlier and later than others, ie. Murray, Nick K. Also, does the angle of her elbow position change during her swing or stay more or less the same? Looking forward to your 🚫 "lag and snap" video.

Yes, it is true that her takeback is much more compact on the return of serve at 11:00 because she has less time on a fast serve. It appears that her strings do not face down on that return of serve as compared to her forehand. Racquet face appears perfectly on edge throughout the swing. Is that correct? Is there any significance to this strings down position? I am guessing that Halep will have strings down on a typical forehand rally ball -- the strings down position helps generate topspin. Whereas on the return of serve, topspin might not be necessary on a fast serve -- just block it back

You nailed it. You have less vertical movement on the swing so if you had a closed racket face you'd miss into the net. If you block it it's more of a horizontal motion.

Very detailed analysis 👍. Question: it seems she was already holding her racket in forehand grip waiting for the serve? Do you have recommendations for people who use one handed BH in receiving serve? Should we hold the racket in FH grip then change to BH or hold it in continental and change every time?

I have a one hander and I have my dominant hand in continental and the off-hand on the throat so I'm changing to both unless it's a slice.

Meike Babel Tennis thanks. Do you use continental or backhand grip for backhand slice?

Will you say Ash Barty’s forehand is similar to Halep’s? They look quite different to me but both have explosive forehand.

What are your thoughts on straighter arm vs bent arm with fh?
@MeikeBabelTennis
@MeikeBabelTennis 2 жыл бұрын
If you mean at contact point it really depends on the grip. The grip demands the swing path which in turn demands the contact point and the shape the arm has when making contact. Fed has a straight arm, someone with an extreme Western usually has a bit more bend.

@@MeikeBabelTennis I agree. And most ATP players with a semi western or more extreme have a bend arm at contact but Nadal being the exception with a semi western grip but an almost straight arm at contact.
