Dolphins are one of the smartest animal species on Earth. In fact, their encephalization quotient (their brain size compared to the average for their body size) is second only to humans. But exactly how smart are they? Lori Marino details some incredible facts about dolphins.

"On the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much-the wheel, New York, wars and so on-whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. They also have "spindle neurons", which are specialised for the processing of emotion and social abilities. What is even more interesting is that they have three times as many of these neurons as humans do, even when accounting for the fact their brains are larger than ours. We can infer that their cognitive abilities for emotion may even surpass ours.

I think dolphins are probably more consistently intelligent than humans. Dolphins do not have geniuses, but they do not have idiots either. My theory is that humans only have geniuses because we have hands and thumbs, and have mastered tool use, and thus can study things more thoroughly. We also have idiots whom have piggybacked on those geniuses. Dolphins do not have idiots, because they could not survive, and were possibly outcasted before they reached maturity.
@disagreewitheverything1474

Seems more likely that because the maximum intelligence of a dolphin is (as said above) about that of a three-year-old, there is much less of a range in intelligence. Not to mention the importance teaching plays in human intelligence, essentially expanding the range multifold.

@robertspaggiari7033

@@imaginarychip4916 First of all, I have to say that my comment was focused on the use of dolphins in captive situations, as in my reference to the Whale Sanctuary Project, led by Dr. Lori Marino. And like her, I mainly speak from a North American context, where mainly sharks eat dolphins - unlike humans. You might address your concerns by contacting Only One on the internet. This is a reputable organization led by very famous people. It's not a secretive conspiracy making claims without evidence. I support their campaigns about driftnets, and the ocean agenda petition. My question to you is, WHICH humans, and why? Can you be more specific? I don't know which country you're in, or what you call "rich." Globally, most people contribute to dolphin death - either as bycatch or by habitat destruction - by eating fish, much of which is imported from poorer countries. Should we suspend all fishing? Maybe we should! What do you think? Some poor fishermen hate dolphins because dolphins eat fish and prevent them from earning a better living. And dolphins are easy to kill. The solutions are not so easy to agree upon, because different humans are affected in different ways. Oh and by the way, whale meat and fish products have often been included in dog food. I wonder whether dolphin meat is. So...I need you to provide more information before I can support your comment, which does not really fit with the research I read.

fun fact: alongside humans, dolphins are one of the few species that will kill for fun there have been accounts of porpoise carcasses having signs of dolphin aggression, these porpoises were killed by dolphins, they werent killed for meat since dolphins dont eat them, they werent killed for territorial reasons since dolphins would often follow porpoises way outside of their territory, and they didnt kill them out of competition either, since they dont hunt the same prey the conclusion is that dolphins think murder is fucking hilarious

Just finished my part time job at a place that literally took care of injured dolphin. It's turned out that dolphins are extremely sensitive creatures. They were able to tell people apart and bond differently with everyone. They could chose who are their favorites and who they just don't like. They smart enough to test boundaries with new people to get to know them better, by splashing water at them and sometimes giving playful bites. But be careful when they showed some defensive attitude. Sure they could bond with people, but like I said, they are sensitive, so some errors people make can make them slightly angry and decided to simply ignore people or in some more serious case head-butting people...

mic of orion as far as i know, in Europe its illegal to get close to dolphins in the wild, so thats a way of protecting them by law, at the expense of all those thousands of people in the world whose greatest dream is to swim with free dolphins (not captive ones) and share a mystical experience with them.

+Corner Universe That will never happen. Human rights only improve when the opressed themselves speak up and fight back and impress on the ignorant that they are to be treated as equals. Animals can't do that and need human embassadors, which doesn't have the same emotional and moral impact on the ignorant. You can always publicly make fun of the vegans/vegetarians/animal rights supporters for their "quixotic" believs but you can't keep making fun of opressed minorities without considerable backlash.

Then there's also the unmentioned fact that dolphins are complete sex freaks, not just for reproduction, but for pleasure. They'll behead a fish's head and insert their penis inside it and treat it like a fleshlight. Male dolphins will also commonly have sex with other males or calves, and they will also form a team to rally and hunt female dolphins for their sex slaves.

I get sick on the thought of humans eating meat from: Crows, dolphins (related species killer whale and so on), whales, pigs and chimpanzees. All of these animals understand when they are going to die and feel an extreme amount of dread, fear and terror before it happens. When someone is eating dolphin meat it's like someone is eating another person to me, some things we have in common: personalities, different tastes, social groups, understanding of themselves, can ask questions, empathy (compassion), love, deduction and so on.

Something to keep in mind with our understanding of animal intelligence is that the way in which animals express or make evident their intelligence we as humans can not perceive without the aid of technology. Dolphins and their communication through sonar is one such example. Without technological aid, we humans would not be able to know these wonderful creatures are interacting with and communicating with complex language, with language being one of the defining characteristics of human intelligence, this is a massive piece of evidence that humans are nearly on par with human intelligence. Another such example is Elephants and their ability to communicate by making vibrations in the ground that other elephants then perceive with their feet. Elephants are another example of an extremely intelligent, social, empathetic animal who's capacity for intelligence we as humans were physically incapable of perceiving. The point in saying all this is that it is with almost 100% certainty that all these animals have additional behaviors and expressions proving their intelligence as similar and even equivalent to our own, but in ways current technology can not yet ascertain. Animals are far more conscious and intelligent than our species ever has acknowledged before, and i hope to see the day where mammals are given similar rights that humans have.

Im a Pacific islander & my ancestors were dolphin whisperers. When traveling on the ocean & we get caught in a storm they call on them to lead them to a nearest island for shelter & wait out the storm. Each families has a particular sea animal they can communicate with like turtles, rays, whales & sharks just to name a few. Unfortunately more & more of us today like myself have dropped our island life in search for the “American dream” & i believe its killing us. Many of us move out of the islands & end up coming back in a coffin because of broken hearts, homesick & the cold weather in which we are not used to.
