Do animals think? It’s a question that has intrigued scientists for thousands of years, inspiring them to come up with different methods and criteria to measure the intelligence of animals. Bryan B Rasmussen navigates through this controversial question, showing how determining intelligence often says more about how humans think than about anything else.

How do you know if they're conscious? Have you ever witnessed a cat in it's last moments? My cat neko even left her new born kittens in my lap because she knew she was dying and I didn't know. She was like "here, I know you're a good person. My babies are safe with you." She trusted me more than a human has ever trusted me, that's enough for me to know how sensitive and intelligent these creatures are.

On the night my cat died her back legs were paralyzed and she was covered in her own puke meowing in what was clearly recognizable pain and fear until I went over to comfort her. You can't tell me she wasn't feeling something, that she wasn't scared that her legs weren't working. I can't prove anything has consciousness, but if I believe that I'm conscious then I can't be so childish as to believe only humans have it.

I also believe animal are conscious.whenever i am sad my parrots start talking to me in low voice( they can say a few words) when i am on call they also start to talk lol.i had a parrot before who flew away( was really wild one) his cage was open for an hour when i came back and saw i started looking as we have cats in our area and are always after my birds.i saw my parrot on nearby tree he looked straight to me for like 5 minutes and then flew away.like saying hey I am going and it's not the cats that took me.my parrots really like cashews and when I act like I am eating those they come close to look while slowly saying mama and her eyes get angry looking when I don't give her.when I act like I am beating my daughter they start to shout lol when someone comes to take money they see and shout lol everyone be like ohh they understand.when I am sick they don't say anything at all.Ah and whenever I wear new clothes or something they haven't seen they come close and start to shout as if asking where are you going?my parrots also like to eat whatever I am eating.

In the past, people have complained about racial bias in the construction of intelligence tests. We are now dealing with something even harder to eliminate in our intelligence tests - species bias. As one of the more obvious examples, we often judge the intelligence of animals such as dolphins based on how many human words they can learn and understand. However, dolphins have a very complex language which we have, so far, been completely unable to decipher. If dolphins were to apply this same test to humans, then the dolphins would have to conclude that humans are complete idiots, since despite our best efforts, we have failed to learn even a single word that the dolphins are saying.
@HeatherSpoonheim
@HeatherSpoonheim 8 жыл бұрын
+Eugene Khutoryansky Yup. Also, I think that linguistics can show us just how different grammatical structures can be - and can really push our limits of understanding when we find languages that lack what we consider to be 'core' features - such as 'left' and 'right'. Before we can even begin to understand dolphin language, I think we need to better understand their lives in the wild - to understand what sort of information is important for them to communicate.
@darkmater4tm

+Eugene Khutoryansky The fact that dolphins aren't wearing the labcoats is proof enough that humans are the more intelligent species. We have deengineered, understood and reengineered the world around us in ways that other species aren't intelligent enough to begin trying. We found ways to feed billions more than nature could naturally support. We've build contraptions and electronics which work long after we've left them alone. We've split the atom. We know what the moon is. We've figured a way to get to it and back. When the next asteroid hits earth, we will have seen it months in advance. One day, we will colonise another planet. Meanwhile, there's some evidence that dolphins can tell jokes to each other. Dolphins are soooooo intelligent. If a dolphin ever thought humans are dumb, it's only because everything that humans do goes completely over its head.

+DarKMaTTeR Yes, but humans are also idiots. Every species in nature before us has known how nature works, and has kept it running. Then humans come in, having no clue how things in nature are supposed to be, bring invasive species to habitats to destroy them, and cause millions of species to go extinct. And Dolphins, elephants, monkeys, and many other animals are very intelligent. Plus, we can't tell if they have a way of organizing things like a government, because we don't know their language. Plus, many species understand human language, but can't speak it because their voice box works differently. So animals have the intelligence to speak English, but lack the ability to make the sounds. Humans on the other hand, could easily speak in animal languages, but we lack the intelligence. So unless your measuring intelligence by how an animals voice box works, animals are probably more intelligent than us.

I think my cat shows conscious thought all the time, I can tell how she feels when she flicks her tail. And she always shows facial expressions, I think she has even more conscious thought than my dog because she’s always observing things. But sometimes I cry and so my dog comes to me and cuddles me to make me feel better. I never taught him what crying is, or how to make me feel better. He wants to make me feel better and he consciously thought that after years of observing that human crying is not a good sign, he felt that cuddling me would be the way to do it.

dogs don't have a conscience, feel guilt, or have empathy. So, it is most likely that the dog sees you as pack leader, detects some kind of distress when you are crying, and goes up to you for its OWN comfort and security, because if there is something wrong with the pack leader, it might threaten HIS food supply or safety.

Honestly, by living with animals so much I've grown to think that they're just like us, but just lack one thing (advance communication). So, they may think certain things but don't convey it like we do. Eg: my dog and I tease each other, he knows when I'm laughing obnoxiously and hits me for it, not so different than my brother.

Great video. When I was little, I thought like that too. "Do animals/other people have consciousness or experience like what I am experiencing now?". But I later learnt that some people (especially Rene Descartes) have the same thoughts as I do too, therefore, they must be concious. "I think, therefore, I am" - Rene Descartes. Then I saw the people who don't have the same consciousness in the comment section.

She showed and talked about mourning her kitten, and also being sad over the death of Robin Williams. I think humans are the ones that are still clueless. We think we are better than them. In reality they are more capable of showing kindness and love than we are.

*Humans are smart animals, the only thing that makes us different then animals is that we have a advanced rational mind*. We have a rational mind but we also have a instinctual animal mind which manifest as sexdrive, violence, we inheritated from the animal realm (evolution) this instinctual mind is not your friend, it is controlling your life, it will strive only for pleasure, it is your ultimate task to change and overcome this mind. The *Truth of Life* is the key. Google *TruthContest read the Present*, it explains the big picture of life, it explains life in every facet including how to change the badstates of your mind permanlty, it is the key to true fulfillment.

That's right. Humans are so selfish and arrogants. We always think that we are the most advanced etc. I hate when i think like that, like other humans. The mental difference with other earth creatures and humans is that humans, as you say and i totally agree is that they just have the rational part of their brains advanced. So wise words man... :,) bravo !

Imagine this: A dog is chasing a rabbit when it reaches a point where the road splits into two separate paths. The dog goes up to the first path and sniffs it, trying to find the scent of the rabbit, and then repeats the same act on the second path. Finally, the dog takes the first path and continues chasing the rabbit. So, did the dog choose the first path purely based on instinct or was it intelligent enough to compare and decide which path was the correct one to take?

Animals can feel emotions and have some intelligence but they do not think outside of what they are. Humans do not just ask "how" but also "why" and "what". That is what led us to learn to plant. We saw a tree with fruits and instead of just talking the fruit, eating it, and moving on. We ask "Why is this fruit here? How did it get here?" and most important of all "What was here before it". Animals have never thought outside of their own selfs to think about their perception of the world and what was before. That is why we are where we are now. We asked what was here before and what is here now. We looked beyond the physical now.

Nekogami-Crystal all life is intelligent, even the simplists bacteria have more intelligence than our best computers ( because they have the ability to have self preservation and survive on their own, computers still cannot do that). all life is important and intelligence is an arrogant view path, can we really say humans are smart if we build weapons to kill ourselves off and sit arrogantly thinking we can outlast nature?. creativity for example is not viewed as important in our societies now adays and math is put over it. however it is creativity that has saved humanity from extinction several times and not math based intelligence.

I always outrage when I hear people talking to their dogs in a serious manner. Yeah sure they can understand few hundred words and you can talk to them for fun, but they just *cannot understand* sentences. As if our huge brain was just a ornament. Dogs have limited intellectual capabilities. Get over it. I hear people saying stuff like "you need to get out of the bed because you're going to mess up the new blanket". And then waiting stuff to happen. The dog has no idea what you're trying to say.
@lordundeadrat
@lordundeadrat 9 жыл бұрын
RealationGames Rationally, everyone knows their dogs don't understand them. I hope so anyway. We don't talk to our pets like that to communicate. We do it for ourselves. You can't say everything you're thinking to another person. But that limitation breaks down in the face of a creature that doesn't understand you. So you can spout on about any old thing mostly to hear yourself talk. Furthermore, dogs may not understand sentences. But the have been shown to well understand tone and intention. They can tell from the way you talk if you are happy or angry. They even respond to depression and more complicated emotions.
