I've smoked for years, Just had a ALIF and i had my last smoke the night before surgery. There was no way in hell i was risking my healing.

I am a Vaper and I had spine surgery 2 months ago. I healed up quickly and did not have the problems usually experienced by a smoker. Apparently the British Medical Association is correct in reporting that Vaping is significantly safer than smoking.

Thank You So Much For Such A Great Advice Sir...I am a 30 year old and I have two time Surgery first in 2015 in L5S1 and second in 2019 in L4L5 And still suffering from back pain even I have take tomorrow my appointment with doctor...no one told me about smoking effects on spine...now I have decided to quiet smoking... thank You once again sir...🙏

Curious how doctor opinions has changed since they now prescribe medical marijuana for various medical needs in various states.

In general, most physicians will still recommend staying away from THC-containing products, because we don't know what the medium-to-long-term effects of this substance are. Any smoke (cigarette or otherwise) has many different chemical compounds which can have toxic effects on the body.

Hello doctor I am going in for a micro disectomy in the next few days. Would nicotine gum still be bad for my recovery?

Thank you for your question. Yes, nicotine (in any form) will slow-down the healing of soft-tissues (and bone) after surgery. To make sure that you have a quick and comprehensive recovery, it would be best to stop nicotine for as long as possible (before and after the surgery). Good luck to you 👍

Would using smokeless tobacco bring on the non healing also ?

That is a great question. Nicotine (in any form) is harmful to the health of the spine. Smokeless tobacco should therefore be avoided.

Does this advice also apply to having an occasional cigar (Cigar smoke is Non-inhaled)?

To my knowledge even small quantities of nicotine can significantly slow down bony healing. I tell my patients that it would be not worth it to smoke even "a little bit" if it means taking the risk of complications after a major surgery, like spinal surgery.

Hello doctor,my father consumes (chews) a lot of tobacco,he has undergone a spine surgery 4 years ago.During initial 2 months of his surgery he stopped eating tobacco and his recovery was so fast,but gradually he started eating tobacco again.fist he used to walk on stick but he is unable to put a single step without Walker,so could there be any role of tobacco in his retarded recovery and him not being able to walk properly.he don't feels his legs as they are numb

Hello doctor, i did lumbar MICRODISECTOMY 4 months ago. I stop smoking during these 4 months. But i smoke 2 cigeret a day from last 2 days. Today i have little pain from right side of my back. But not in the surgical sight. This pain why doctor?. Its may b due to smoking?

Thank you for reaching out. Without a clinical examination, I cannot say why you are having the back pain. However, it is well known that nicotine causes people to become more sensitive to pain (i.e. their body's ability to deal with painful stimuli is impaired). Quitting smoking is the best thing you will do in your life for your health.
