Have you ever wondered why we don't have any other car than an ambassador in the past, why Hindustan motors never changed its looks and engine for decades, or why it couldn't compete with new cars when the market opened in 1991?
in this video, I've explained how all of this happened due to license raj and govt. policies

Back in 2008, I got a job offer from HM in my college placement. During the interview rounds I asked one of the panelists why there are no changes in the design or no new models coming out of HM. The response was hilarious. They said, the car was designed in such a way that even changing anything as fine as a hair would disrupt the fine balance of the Ambassador car. Thankfully I never joined them and they got shut down some years later.

Let me tell you an insider story when maruti 800 was first launched in India , HM bought 2 cars and tried to figure out the engine. The entire R & D team of HM couldn't figure out then they were forced to tie up with Isuzu for their engines coz they were so overwhelmed with the modernity of Japanese engines. My family is involved with the automobile industry in Kolkata so thats how I know this story don't know if it's public or not
@techcloud2510
@techcloud2510 Жыл бұрын
Maruti had tieup with Isuz for sometime to build more powerful engines. I had seen some Isuzu batched MS Zen so no surprise. India never built its own engine, all are imported or taken after company acquisition - like M&M took Daewoo, Tataa took JLR. else so far zero domestic engines. Dont be surprised with this bitter truth. We were always kaamchor.

@@techcloud2510Your View though partly true but not entirely accurate. Mahindra had their own engines before acquiring Daewoo or sannyong which they did so get some premium segment tech , Tata engines from indica had problems but yeah they did transfer JLR engine tech to modern tata cars hence we can see the refinement in Nexon , Safari , Harrier. Maruti doesn't exist only their service network does with a small share it's all Suzuki ...but Suzuki tying up with ISUZU makes not sense. It's not that the car companies r kamchor as u defined , the industry doesn't work like that most consumers have diff understanding of how stuff works in the car industry. Except for the chassis no car company builts anything inhouse that is also true for the rest of the world...the story is too long to comment here so I will leave at this ....Our companies are not kamchor it just doesn't make economic sense to build a new engine from scratch all the time ...

Remember Bajaj Chetak that had a defect because of which you had to tilt it in order for it to start? That succeeded in the Indian market for the same reason as well, Bajaj family was close to Government. They even managed to sell the same Chetak without fixing that flaw for couple of decades. In open market that product would have rotted in factories. Even Maruti Suzuki manage to enter India, because the Nehru's Grandchild Sanjay Gandhi wanted to start a car company. Even Royal Enfield remained as relevant in India while the original Enfield went bankrupt in UK when better alternatives became available.

There is one main reason for Japanese companies to dominate the world in automobile industry, which is, that the Japanese companies PAID their engineers to go on vacations to places like Detroit, Germany, Italy and see their cars being manufactured and also drive them. For some engineers they sponsored them to pursue Masters in those countries, which helped for a soft technology transfer through not making any deals. The entire world was against Japan and their companies after WW2, so they could not make any deals with other companies even if opened their market at that time.

This created leftist votebank who voted for Congress as these PSUs employed large workforce.. Also we have lost so many opportunities of forming aviation industries with multinational gaints just like in 60s because Air india dominates the aviation industry as it is a family heirloom ,of course bjp's. We can see scam busts reports like 2G scam, coal scam, chopper scam etc. just like back in 2000s. @@MentorjiIn in those India was weak and having to deal with a very powerful pakistan, China and usa. So a socialist economy that focused on creating strategic industries and war weapons was needed. Only after India created its nuclear weapons and large scale support from ussr in the 60s and 70s did India become strong enough to scare Pakistan and restrain China.with that India could move to liberalisation of economy as socialist systems are efficient at heavy machinery, military and industry but lack very much in other sectors like service economy, semiconductors and innovation. But yes the heavy industrial and military backbone created by socialism in india enabled India to smash Pakistan and weaken and created the soil on which liberalization, it industry and innovation prospered. Were it not for socialism, India would have been conquered by radical Islam(ghazwa e hind) and your sisters and large numbers of hindu women would have been traded in the Islamic slave markets of pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan. The reason why modi is able to act so boldly is that huge military industrial backbone that was created in 1960s to 1990s by congress. As coal scams, 2g there is enough nepotism of bjp like electoral bond scam, anti democratic farmer Bill created by bjp for adani and Ambani, the crony capitalist control of the press, evm vote rigging. Like how American prosecutors are accusing adani of mass bribery and tax evasion?like how adani and Ambani use law as their puppet. I will agree that congress is a corrupt and useless party but bjp is trying to crush all opposition with the Ed, evm rigging, Mafia like behavior. We have seen it in the case of how they destroyed the Aap party which was made of educated people

Yes, what you said is perfectly fine. Ambassador was the only leading car in a row of 3 cars Herald and PAL. Ambassador occupied the lion's share of the market by monopoly with the help of politicians. You had to book an Ambassador car by paying advance I don't remember now how much. May be 1000 or 5000 Rs. No interest. You will get the car after 3 to 5 years. Influential people got faster. The Mark 1 to 4 were just minor changes like mirror, seat, etc. Shameful. We saw a real car when Indira Gandhi ordered a small car factory for her younger son uneducated unemployed Sanjay. In collaboration with Suzuki, a minor motor manufacturer then. I think it was one of the smallest cars Suzuki 800, very cheap. There was still cheaper one Isuzu. Very few purchased it. I am telling the situation outside India. For Indian executives who were pampered with Premier Padmini, an oldie car from PAL, Suzuki was a dream. Very few opted for Herald. Ambassador felt the heat after the eighties. They made Hindustan Contessa. I think Ambassador engine with a bigger better body. Unfortunately it was a mismatch and failure. Soon Rajiv Gandhi opened up foreign collaboration. Ambassador slowly lost its ground. Natural death. Well deserved. Exploitied Indians of 2 generations. Same design. Poor looks. Poor service.

I remeber a statement of President of Hindustan Motors in news papers when market price of ambassador was Rs.66,000. He stated that the government of india wanted himdustan motors to reduce the price of ambassador car. He further stated that production cost of the car was Rs.22,000 and the rest constituted taxes. Cars of comparable specifications available in international market were costing more than the cost of ambassador car. Another car manufactured in india was fiat. Ambassador was dominant in Calcutta and fait was dominant in bombay market. Ambassador tried to enter into bombay market by sending its product by air as calcutta and bombay were not adequatly connected by road. This exercise of hindustan motors failed miserably as logistic cost was very high. Another car manufactured in india was Standard 10. But this car was not successful. That was period when european manufacturers knew that their obsolete automobile manufacturing machinery will be consumed in Indian market. That is how we got Vespa and Lambretta scooters in india.

Thank you so much for your candid observations. Competition motivates Innovation, while monopoly breeds complacency. Apart from Monopoly and Govt. policies, I feel there are many other factors like no incentive or promotion for improvement, lack of highly skilled engineers who could make changes, shortage of capital for modernization. etc. Even today it's an irony that Petrol with additives (HP Power, IOCL XPlus etc.) is treated as luxury product and higher taxes are levied on it. The truth is, by adding additives in Petrol, there is less pollution, less were and tear of the engine and better milage, resulting in direct benefit for the country. But instead of promoting, successive govts are trying to extract more tax from the user and indirectly discouraging use of a superior product.

India was literally USSR colony till 1990. As soon as USSR (socialism) collapsed, we also got bankrupt. Then came the American (capitalism) owned IMF to bail us out. But but but they came with strict conditions like adopting capitalism and making economic and foreign policies as per their conditions. So it was not Manmohan Singh who liberalised Indian economy but India was forced by IMF to do so. Any nation which takes loan from IMF literally looses it's sovereignty to USA. Latest example is Pakistan. It's only post 2014 we actually started becoming sovereign nation.

Excellent article. The take away here is not that the Ambassador was a bad car or that the HF-24 was superior to MiG -21, it is that if the government does not allow innovation, it stifles design, engineering and advancement. HM had no need for design, they were a manufacturing house that had a captive market. Similarly, HAL became a purely manufacturing house because the HF-24 design team was disbanded after their highly successful design (interesting way to reward performance). Also, a government has to be extremely naïve to trust their erstwhile colonial masters to give them a cutting edge jet engine to power a fighter designed by a German that could be a rival to the British Electric Lightning with two RR Avon engines. Expected outcomes occurred.

Also the Vespa and Lambretta scooters. Basically most of the vehicles were petrol guzzlers, except Mahindra, and unreliable. It's only after Maruti and Hyundai etc. that the market opened up to international brands. Todays youth have hundreds of models to choose from. India wasted four decades before developing the auto industry. That too in a market with a rapidly growing population. I agree with the presentation. The licence Raj created a mindset of mediocrity which continues even today. Very few indigenous brands can compete in quality with developed countries.

Fantastic video man! I personally love the Ambassador too and grew up with the car myself (no I am not that old, the car has just been in my family that long). Although what you have covered in the video might seem controversial and hardcore Amby lovers might take some offense to it but its necessary for us to understand the underpinnings of our history. We as automotive enthusiasts "love" our cars (sometimes too much) to not be able to see them for what they are and have always been: transportation technology. So even though I love my Amby I must admit that the car was never as good as it could have been, especially in the later stages of its life. Sadly, due to the reasons you touched upon and probably many more, we no longer have HM or the Amby around anymore...

One correction, Hindustan motors had Contessa and fiat had NE118. These both cars were considered as luxury cars.

Government is unnecessary increasing cost of Vehicles. Norms tightened only on cars, what about 3 wheelers, 2 wheelers? And foremost what about road quality standards??

Not just Ambassador, HMT tractor, Rajdoot bike shared similar destiny. Ok i can understand that government closed policy did not motivate R&D, but what about companies and people? Even today we have to beg for patents from international companies.

Nehru and Indira didn't liked development of India even when they were the rulers, but even in his small tenure, Rajiv Gandhi tried something to do. He brought in the Japanese companies to collaborate with Indian companies and manufacture goods. Though he wasn't so intelligent as his mother and did some mistakes, but in his heart he loved India.

Ah the old car from Nuffield, England. They were just what India needed.....something that went the distance with a loud horn! I remember an Uncle having one of the first models after the Landmaster was put into mothballs. The engine block was derived from England and was much sought after. You had to put your name down, years in advance for delivery!

Nice info. You could have also included how union strikes in Hind Motor factory forced it to shut down. How Hindustan Motors tried diversifying with Contessa and JV with Mitsubishi

Even after watching the whole video, people blaming nehru for this is the height of the attitude that indians are famous for. It's very clear that japan too was just like india, with the same policies, but with an even smaller domestic market. But the difference was in the mindset of the people. The japanese took the same opportunity (even though of a smaller scale) and blew it to great proportions. Just like any typical indian, HM was more focused on only taking money from the customer, not giving any return in worth for the money he was making in any development or improvement in what product he gave. It's not just in this case, but any case. The very mindset with which indians and other people do things just makes it all the more clear. The mindset and attitude of the indian beurocracy is the best example for this. If you study what china did for some years with its human resource and infrastructure, you'll get the point. They perfected their skills, and brought perfection to their skills. One thing every one in the entire world will agree on is that if the same product is compared from india and any other country, it is gojng to be so much inferior in perfection and performance. Since some years it has changed a lot, but still those who are familiar with indians in many countries can very well get it.

My family had 3 generations of HM Ambassador from mark 2 to Grand and now we are using Maruti Suzuki Dzire and I can definitely say that both are poles apart. Once you ride a Dzire from an Ambassador you can immediately feel that Amby is of stone age. Even my father before buying Dzire did not want to believe that there is any better car than Ambassador. That's the monopoly they created.
