@@ZeallustImmortal the book No Man Knows My History chronicles the various way Joseph and his stooges tried to recruit people to boost their numbers. This is also the same reason why they were one of the few places in a pre-civil war America that allowed black people (for a very limited time until violence was used by pro-slavery folks which lead to African Americans not being allowed to join until somewhere in the 70s/80s I can’t remember the years). A lot of people within early Mormonism would just do things thinking they were helping and counter intuitively nearly getting people killed, or leading to actual death in several cases.

Ex Mormon here, all of it was painfully accurate. And that's considering they didn't even touch all the weird lore surrounding the religion. Granted, it's not really any dumber than the average Christian lore as a whole (I will die on the hill that even when i was religious, Noah's Arc story sounded like the most farfetched thing i've ever heard) It's definitely got some wacky shit, but plenty of people in the church are indeed just genuinely nice and respectful. Theories about modern Lamanite descendants Many Mormons consider Native Americans to be descendants of the Lamanites. Officially, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints appears to at least partially accept this position. For many years, the Mormon Church has claimed that Native Americans were the descendants of one of the lost tribes of Israel that migrated to the Americas around 600 B.C. In addition, according to Mormon doctrine, this tribe divided into two groups, the Nephites, who were whites, and the Lamanites, who became black as a punishment for worshiping idols.

The skin wasn't a punishment, God did it to separate his people from those who didn't follow his ways. Also the church has records of missionaries sent specifically to the descendant tribes.

I think the thing that gets under my skin about religion and it's family values the most is... you don't need all that whacky stuff to have a good family relationship... or at least, you shouldn't. Why are we relying on specific religious teachings and quite literally living through a delusional worldview to get us to be good people rather than just.... being good people?
@jackychen7769
@jackychen7769 5 ай бұрын
I think it's less about religion having family values to make people good and more about religion being an easy way to teach those values. Rather than telling your child "don't go out at night, it's dangerous cuz someone might kidnap you", you could tell them of a thrilling horror story where a child that went out at night was chased by a crazed madman who caught the child before they could run back inside, leading to them being kidnapped and having terrible things happen to them! Religions tend to have many stories with such lessons after all. I think most people are relatively neutral and simply want to live out their life in relative peace doing whatever they want (tho this is a personal anecdote). Given the chance, people may be nice/cruel, and I like to believe more will choose to be nice, but most of us want to take care of ourselves and those close to us first and foremost, so being good/bad depends more on the situation we find ourselves in. Hard to be a charitable and kind person when you're poor and starving, and seeing bad people rewarded doesn't exactly encourage people to be good. Beyond that, some people simply are bad, and this world can reward them (the rich don't get richer by being charitable). "Basically, it's hard for many to be good just for the heck of it in this cruel world." - Guy lucky enough to have an internet connection
