How about some Technically Speaking videos with more in depth information about tuning the Elite series ECU, and some advanced ideas on table axis creation to do things that most guys might not think of if they are new to the platform. I love my Elite 2500, but I still struggle to get the most out of it. Also the shops in the US with the capability to really dig deep into the functionality of the Elite series are few and far between. I do have to admit your customer support is outstanding, someone is almost always available to take a call and help out as much as possible.

Whats the common reason for the ceramic above the tip break, is it pre ignition or just bad quality plugs ?

I know that the car manufacturer recommends certain gap size for the engine spark plugs that depends on the compression ratio. but is there any formula to determine the gap on my own? I know that as the compression ration goes up, the gap gets smaller as there are more molecules per cubic millimeter of the compressed air that can fill the space between the center electrode and the ground electrode, making a good flame kernel and propagation possible, and I also like to know the gap tolerance by which I mean how much we can open the gap before misfire point. Isn there any benefit in widening the gap beyond the factory default and recommended value?

What do you know about spark plug *modifications*? Specifically side-gapping and indexing? I have seen dyno comparisons indicating repeatable gains of (iirc) 2-3%. Logic says that it reduces any shrouding effect of the ground electrode at the cost of increasing wear rates because of the always-the-same spark location gradually eroding it. With the much shorter ground electrode I *imagine* that there would be less chance of preignition as well
@patw52pb1
@patw52pb1 6 жыл бұрын
Take it from somebody(me) that has been involved in professional motorsports for more than 35 years, side gap plugs, thin electrode plugs, exotic material electrodes are more expense than they are worth and indexing is more trouble than it is worth. I log over 600 hours of engine and chassis dyno time every year for the last 21 years and my experience indicates there is very little to be gained with exotic plugs or plug ground strap indexing/orientation on anything less than a purpose built ragged edge competition engine. The benefit is not there for anything that is street driveable. Most of the above in most applications will not net a reliable consistent, repeatable 1 percent increase, especially on a street car. in my opinion the time, effort and money is better spent on head flow improvements and engine management tuning.

How would a Water/Meth injection effect your spark plugs? would they require a larger or smaller gap? Or is the only thing effecting where the gap needs to be compression and air flow (boost)? also, do any of the Haltech ECU's have the capability to control a water/meth kit without additional add ons?

Hi Scott. Re Cooler plugs, does the 1 step cooler per 100hp thing apply to 4 cylinder motorcycles, eg a 600 or 750? or would you want to go cooler sooner. Would it be different for turbo or n.a.?
@y180sx5
@y180sx5 6 жыл бұрын
are you referring to CC? I've messed around with colder plugs on my motorcycle and it only made it harder to start and added no noticeable performance. I'd just stick with a quality plug in the same heat range.
@Lostu_Datto
@Lostu_Datto 6 жыл бұрын
Scott, you say 1 heat range cooler per 100kw more than standard. But what about E85?, any tips here. My car is a real pain to start when cold. It's a very high HP car, with very cold plugs. So curious if I can go hotter with E85 and how much hotter?
@patw52pb1
@patw52pb1 6 жыл бұрын
E85 can be and usually is difficult to initially ignite when engine and ambient temps are low. The same occurs with high octane race fuels with a low Reid Vapor Pressure (RVP). My experience is that spark plug temp range is not an issue on initial cold starts. Reading the plugs will tell you if you have the proper heat range. Depending on the engine and ambient temps, hard starting on E85 can be helped with more brute force such as a good high current delivery battery that spins the engine over at greater than 100 RPM, and increasing the spark voltage, current and duration. I drive an E85 fueled vehicle year round where the ambient temperature drops below freezing (32F/0C) and it ican be difficult starting when the temp is below freezing. I initially combat the hard starting by adding 2 gallons of premium 93 AKI gasoline per 10 gallons of E85 when the temps are going to be near or below freezing. Last year we had several days where the low temp was near 12F (-12C) and I just squinted some regular gasoline used for the lawn mower into a vacuum line using a condiment squeeze bottle prior to starting and it worked every time. I also carry a can of spray starting fluid... just in case. Good luck with your issue.

I would like to hear your opinion on road tunning a car.
@sardengineering
@sardengineering 6 жыл бұрын
NotIrishRider within context there's nothing wrong with road calibration, meaning no dyno. Please be mindful that if your objective is to equal the thoroughness, effectiveness and quality of a dyno based calibration using a road based session, then your objectives are misguided. Road tuning can be safe, but in the same manner conservative. You'll also need a fair bit of sensors delivering feedback data on detailed engine operational conditions to facilitate a quantifiable result, the measure of a the tractive effort on an eddy current dyno indispensable in comparison. However, in road tuning the more information you can measure with respect to a change in an engine's operational conditions will be priceless when road tuning. Hope this helps.

Hey Tuning Fork! Thanks for a great video! I've had people tell me about the spark getting "blown out" is this a joke or can it actually happen? I know a bit about cars since I've worked on my own for about 12 years now but I'm always learning from your videos!
@bobbobson7882
@bobbobson7882 6 жыл бұрын
Michael Barnett It can happen. Generally only in high boost or if the spark is really weak.
@skippy2987
@skippy2987 6 жыл бұрын
I always thought "blown out" just meant too much cylinder pressure for the spark to occur. So higher voltage coil or smaller gap was needed
@C0UNTERCLOCKWISE
@C0UNTERCLOCKWISE 6 жыл бұрын
"blown out" is what people tell you. The Actual problem is that with high boost/high compression , there are more air molecules between the spark plug tip. Wich means more spark energy is needed to bridge that gap. as a solution you make that gap smaller or increase spark energy. that last option isnt always possible when on a budget.
@CorndogBrownie
@CorndogBrownie 6 жыл бұрын
C0UNTERCLOCKWISE on fords early 3 valve 5.4 the spark plugs could actually get blown out of the head thanks to crap engineering. Not enough thread in the head to hold it. But yeah is most of the time means that the spark was "blown out" kinda like a candle would get blown out
@patw52pb1
@patw52pb1 6 жыл бұрын
A "blown out" spark plug can mean either a spark plug being literally blown out of the threads in the head by compression, usually due to damaged threads in the cylinder head or the incorrect spark plug body thread/reach or in some rare instances the porcelain center insulator separating from the spark plug body and blowing out under compression leaving the spark plug body securely screwed into the threads of the cylinder head. The other type of "blown out" spark plug is more accurately spark blowout, which is when the coil spark voltage s inadequate to jump the gap or when the coil spark is inadequate in intensity and duration to ignite the air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber/cylinder, this usually occurs during high RPM, high combustion chamber pressures due to high static compression ratio, elevated forced induction boost pressures and or when using nitrous oxide. It is worth noting that some high octane fuels, some race fuels, some E85 and most fuels with low Reid Vapor Pressure (RVP) can be difficult to ignite, particularly in lower temperatures that mimic spark blowout.
