Wow ❤ I didn't work on GK20, but I did work at Phoenix Online. I remember when Chris came onto the scripting team (actually, I think I trained him in the scripting system-though he didn't need much help!). So surreal seeing him for the first time through this video (Phoenix Online was decentralized and met over Skype chats back then). When I discovered that we were the studio making GK20, I was so excited, and I think I begged to work on it (but Jane had to make all decisions about who was on the team and they had already been decided). I love seeing people enjoy the game, even in all its weirdness! Making games is hard, even ones like this! I know when people see things like this, they're quick to shout at the testers, but I personally know the QA team worked their butts off for this (and all the games at Phoenix Online-they were always finding new bugs for us to fix)!
@OneShortEye
@OneShortEye 10 ай бұрын
Absolutely agree that making games is hard. I really tried to get across the fact that the game is only THIS broken because runners deliberately tried to break it. GK20 has some rough edges that are understandable given the circumstances, but definitely plays fine if you're playing "as intended."

@@OneShortEye I really noticed that you (and honestly everyone here in the comments) treated the game fairly and like a thing that people were proud of despite its limitations. I really enjoyed this trip, both for the speedrunning aspects and for the connection to my earlier work (even if I wasn't on that team). The care that you put into these videos really shows through!

@@chrury Ah, hello! Imagine my surprise when I heard your name in this video, and then there you were 😁 Chairs are always tough! Erica didn't sit down nearly as much as Gabe does, so I don't remember a lot of bugs about about chairs, just a lot about charms and one particular scene in Episode 2. It was so long ago! I hope you're doing well these days 😀

It's a shame that the dev team didn't really have the budget they wanted or needed to give the game the polish it deserved. I could definitely hear a bit of sadness in Chris and Robert's voice when talking about the issues. Also, that story near the end of how Robert saw his music was being played at a wedding made me really happy. Few people realize how incredibly brutal being a musician can be, with scarce income, constantly being screwed over by corporations, being belittled by people taking music for granted, and work being tough to find. Like Robert said, it's little things like that which make creating art worth it in spite of how rough things can be.
@incobalt
@incobalt 10 ай бұрын
Yeah, we were working on a shoestring budget (as I heard from outside the GK20 team). Most of the rest of the company was supported by volunteers. They couldn't do that for Jane's games which meant, I think, they had a bit of a scoped down team (although they did get the best people they could from the studio to work on it!).

If anyone is interested in messing around with the glitches in the run but can't afford the game, GK20 also has a great demo available. And with the powers that B you can even play it two in-game days past the cutoff point to Day 4 (where currently we can't advance further since the demo can't properly load in Gran's house). Heck you could even submit a demo% speedrun if you were so inclined.

Your videos are so heartwarming somehow. Every time I watch them I get the same feeling when we meet with our friends after a long time. We just sit together and tell each other what we've been up to. And I feel so proud of them. Like look at the amazing things you guys did, you're all so amazing. I think the obscurity of these games/speedruns add to the feeling. When I watch a popular speedgame I feel like I watch a sports match on TV. Of course I like it and I get hyped, otherwise I wouldn't watch it. But those speedgames and videos are different and great in their own way. The atmosphere you create in your videos is so nice and comforting. And the interview format is also great. I can tell the devs are happy that their games are loved, that people play them, that people speedrun them, that people make videos about them. They're so proud about their creations and they absolutely should be. That gleam of happiness in Robert's eyes when he told about the wedding is what makes me believe everything is right with the world. Many thanks to the devs, the runners and to you for making another great video! Keep up the good work.

Also, I don't think Robert Holmes gets enough credit for how outstanding his music is. Truly beautiful work, and as good, if not better, than some Hollywood film scores that are out there. Like, that Gabriel Knight theme is up there with some of the most iconic movie themes. Sensational stuff!!

You and this channel might be genuinely one of, if not the best video game documentary content producers of all time. I don't think there is a single video of yours I have not watched and immensely enjoyed. I love how you take a new approach to every video, using elements from the last to enhance both the presentation of information and your storytelling ability. Your videos started out somewhat in the shadow of SummoningSalt, but now you're including developer interviews, dissections of game code, and compressing it all into an easy to watch package. I can't say enough good things about this channel and how much I love it and your work. It's my hope that you'll keep doing what you're doing, and also that other game content creators will be inspired by the standards you're setting to incorporate some of these great elements into their own work. I don't know if there is any community for it or if there would be anything interesting to say on the subject, but I would be very curious to see coverage of speedruns of Shadowgate for the NES. It was one of the first games I played, the first adventure game I ever played, and it still has a special place in my heart.

Seeing you interview these adventure game creators really makes me wish for a video on The Dig. Seriously, there is so much about that game and its early versions that we know precious little about. From early drafts of the story, to rewrites of the story by different directors, to scenes featured in behind the scenes videos, there are entire games worth of content cut and replaced. If you ever decide to make a video on The Dig, I have a bunch of cut content and sprites from ATM Machine's old website (that has since gone down, sadly) backed up on my PC. Don't hesitate to let me know, I'd love to help you out if I could. Great video, by the way!

Basically IK makes things easier, FK is sorta piece by piece by method. THey both have their uses. As he said if you do set it up right If you move the hand the arm and other bits in the chain move with that hand. Game engines can be trippy with bones in general. Honestly I blame FBX because I just loathe that something so half baked and glitchy is somehow industry standard lol.

This remake would have been so much better with a lighter touch. Re-do the graphics, absolutely. Re-record the music, sure, if the original composer thinks it's necessary he can do that. But they should have kept all the puzzles and dialog exactly the same, so the voice acting from the original game could have been re-used.

As an animator, I knew immediately it must’ve been a double transform and some FK IK rigging issue cuz I’ve seen my own crappy rigs do the same thing when I was still a student

I remember when GK20 came out. I thought it lacked some of the charm of the original, but I think it worked for what it was. I was excited at the prospect of GK4 coming out if the game did well, but when no news came, I just assumed it got canned, and sadly, this video conformed that. Glad to hear that Jane and Robert are still up for it though.

13:00 And THAT'S why you use quaternions, not euler angles, for 3d dev. I'm not certain that's the cause of it, but all the glitches really do look like wrong-direction rotations, which would be a result of euler angles taking the wrong path from, say, 350 degrees to 10 degrees rotation, and then needing to further correct due to errors caused by incorrect/unexpected rotations compounding the issue.
