Across The Spider Verse is an indisputable MASTERPIECE. It is the future of animation. It is BEYOND cinema at this point. I am absolutely in awe at the successes of this Lord Miller production and I have many many thoughts. Although funnily enough, I was NOT onboard with this movie after my first viewing. But now that I've seen it a couple of times I can share so many extra details, so many techniques used in the storytelling and a whole underbelly of a theory that is just mwah, starring fan favourite character Spider Punk aka Hobie Brown and how he had planned everything behind the events of Spider-Man: Across The Spider Verse...

I like how Miles’ “have two cakes” joke with the counsellor comes up in multiple ways. He literally buys two cakes for his dads party after not having enough space for one. And he is the only spider person who wants metaphorically “have his cake and eat it too” by saving his dad and saving the canon. Incredibly well written film

I mean none of them really act like they need to be there. They choose to because they believe they can help more people that way, because that is a common thread of most spider-people. In fact, you notice it in how a lot of them act. Except for noobies like Gwen pretty much nobody really treats Miguel like he is much of a authority figure. They are all non-stop clowning on him, with a few like spiderpunk pretty blatantly against the system, I very much doubt anyone was under any illusion that he was a fan of how things were being ran.

Edit: Plus, Hobie wasn't outed by anyone for indirectly helping Miles, he did it himself. they still make jokes about animation being the genre you have to painstakingly sit and watch with your children at those awards shows. it will take a while to change, on top of animation is also going to have a little more diversity with more genres, especially drama (you know people eat up drama). so much of animation is sitcom stuff.

Little thing about Miguel O'Hara: He's half-spider, like literally. He was a famous geneticist in his timeline trying to recreate the powers of the original Peter Parker, an accident happens and he more or less gets what he wants but not exactly. A quick rundown of his powers: - He's stronger physically than your average spiderman - No spidersense, he instead has extremely heightened hearing and sight - Can't stick to walls naturally, he uses retractable talons on his hands and feet to climb - He is among the few spidermen that develop their own webbing from their body - He has "spider fangs" that he can use to paralyze his targets should he bite them - His suit is extremely durable but malleable enough to allow his talons to come out and not tear through the suit and also allows him to glide with a web-like material connecting from his forearm to his ribs (imagine like a flying squirrel) Also, my current theory on why he looks so different compared to how he appeared in end credits of the first one is because of the serum he was injecting himself with. Essentially, he's been amping his powers as he may have thought that his prior abilities were not enough to protect the spiderverse

My favorite part about Hobie definitely has to be the sheer level of subversion to your expectations he is. Like, we're all so happy he wasn't just there to be a shitty love triangle but think about it. Miles hears about him, he hears about him sharing interests with Gwen, he hears that Gwen crashes with him sometimes, they were setting us up to expect it. People that have seen a lot of movies would also expect the character in this position to join the opposite side of whatever conflict arises between all the spiders to be a direct obstacle for the main character and have a way to break the love triangle at the end of the movie. Then when he shows up, he breaks a barrier Miles couldn't, both Gwen and Pavitr like him, they talk about his abundance of sweaters which with the love triangle expectation and the commonality of "wearing your boyfriends sweater" and then you can top it all off with the fact that he gave miles advice that could easily have been read as him looking down on Miles and sarcastically saying it. But then the whole movie Hobie does nothing but actually support Miles in making his own decisions regardless of what other people want or say and echoes the original advice as REAL advice and not just some jerk comment, and joins back up in the ragtag group that's going to be resisting Miguel to help Miles in the next movie.

I feel like Gwen's dad at the end is proof that the cannon isn't set? he is no longer the captain so unless she gets close to another captain she will not experience that event. Also I thought that the point was that 42 Prowler was a hero to that world as Miles was destined to get bitten instead (we see him right next to the glitch spider), at least that is my interpretation.
@devofficialchannel
@devofficialchannel Жыл бұрын
Could be metaphorical. She technically did lose a police captain figure, in the sense that George is no longer a cop as opposed to death. Also, I think Miguel is overestimating how Canon Events works out of sheer trauma from his past than anything factual. And the whole plot of Across the Spider-Verse is that the Spider-Society aren't always correct. Also, for 42 Prowler being a hero, I think he's more of a morally gray character like The Punisher in that he's a criminal that exists to kill worse criminals.

I see it more as the cannon needs to be followed, but some events are more important than others and even take each others place based on the Spider of said Earth(India didnt lose anyone close to him, his aunt lives and he has a girlfriend).The death of someone would make him more responsible but who says it has to be a captain, what if he didnt get to web the bus in time and his girlfriend died, then he would save the captain and learn that he needs to be more mature. In Gwens case, she already lost Peter, so the cannon wouldnt be deviated if her dad was to resign or simply not die because it isnt an important event on Earth-65. Is this reaching, maybe, did I put more effort into this comment than I do on my essays, yes, will anyone see this, probably not, but I have a feeling that Gwens line when she learns that her dad resigned(something along the lines of ”So this means”) will play an important role in Beyond the Spiderverse.

@@enderwiggin1510 I was originally supposed to go with my two closest friends, but they flaked on me, so I went with my gf for my first viewing and there were a lot of jokes she didn't laugh at too. Idk if it's just a cultural thing, but the way Miles' parents were acting reminded me of my parents cause they were pretty strict black parents, vs. my gf who had really lenient parents and she's white. I've seen the movie 3 times now and everytime I've seen it, only black people laugh at the jokes at the beginning, which would add up with my first viewing since it was a small theater in a white area, so I just don't think they got it is my guess.

I love how natural the ending is specifically Prowler mile's earth when Miles reveals to Rio he's spiderman she just plays it off as a joke and tells him they both have bigger things to deal with. Then we see Aaron is alive here...but there's something off about him from his eyes to the way he helps Rio. Than he talks to Miles like he always would but than he notices that things are different and when he talks to him about robbing a place you can see that he can tell somethingis wrong. Than we're on the roof it's not the same bright community we saw before. It's dark and cold and whatever light we see isn't warm and inviting it's intimidating and hot like it can burn you. After Miles gets knocked out and we're in the apartment Aaron looks at him not trying to be malevolent but you can tell he and Prowler Miles are assessing the situation not trying to kill Miles but to just know why he's here and in the end he asks Miles why he should be helped.

I agree with that and it you look at some of the signage around the area in 42...it looks like that maybe because that Miles didn't become Spider-man that the Sinister Six might have taken over that universe. Wonder if it might have been Miles's dad's death that cause Aaron to change his way (from being a thief, but to helping Rio to raise Miles) and even to set up 42 Miles as a 'hero' in their universe.

I think Miguel believes he has everything figured out. The fact that Pavitra's universe was bugging out because of the spots mega hole and not the glitchy mess stuff is weird. Also, every Spiderman Miles first interacted with should have their universes collapsed too, they were never supposed to be there and interact with Miles. If Miles had not been there to do anything then the entire multiverse would be different, plus Peter already had his uncle die so he is a spider man weather the others like it or not. All this on top of a million other points.

(SPOILERS) the trans thing could just be hinting at an allegory representing transgender people through the life of gwen stacy, or more specifically, a parent/child relationship about accepting their identity. Think about it. Throughout the course of the movie she sees herself less and less as Gwen but more and more as the Spider-woman, which could be a reference to transitioning. However, her father does not like spider-woman, so when she reveals herself as being the spider-woman he is shocked. She then runs away, and joins the spider community. When she comes back, her father realizes that he was wrong for acting the way he did and accepts her as spider-woman.

My personal favourite thematic in the film was the "Not if you have two cakes", it shows up throughout the movie, from the start where he gets two cakes for his dad instead of one because the message he wants to write is too much for one cake so he *just gets two* and this leads to complications because now he can't carry two cakes at once and also thwip around New York. They don't directly mention it again through the movie but "I can do both" comes up a lot which to me in another way of "having two cakes", it's something Pavitir says as he's trying to save his girlfriend but he wants to save her father too but can't until he saves her. When Miles saves the Captain of Pavitirs universe more complications happen caused by having both. This all culminates in Miles pushing back against the Canon events Theory because Spider-Man always tries to do both. Even if he fails he wants to try and have two cakes and it's wrong for Miguel to stop him from being allowed that chance. You could even go so far as to say the reveal of two Miles in the end is another connection to the Twos thematic. Miles thinks he can appeal to Miles-42's empathy to help him save what would be their shared father only for Prowler to make it clear he's going to stay in his way. Just a nice over-arching thematic all around.

Miguel in the comics is my favorite Spider person. While I loved his accurate characterization in the movie, "techifying" him was one of the aspects I least enjoyed. Miguel in the comics was in an Alchemax accident that game him permanent powers that more closely resembled Daredevil than Spider-Man. His Spider-Sense is actually so OP that he has to wear sunglasses in the daytime to null it's effects. His fangs secret a venom that paralyzes anyone (like a spider), and is physically bigger and stronger than Peter. Additionally, his webs are organic, to contrast with Peter's mechanical Web fluid. His costume is also pretty low tech in the comics, for it is just a black (yes, in the original comics, it was black illuminated by a neon blue setting) day of the dead costume. So, he's a fair bit different, but is mostly the same in the broadstrokes. It's still an excellent adaptation of Miguel's character, though.

There's also the Spider-Bite injection stuff which I know nothing about. In these ways, Miguel is different.

Miles, despite his boundary-breaking acts of heroism in the first movie is branded as a villain completely out of his own control, while 2099 brands himself as a hero under his own authority, while his past actions prove to be intentionally dangerous and selfish, things he sees in Miles, despite them being projected onto him through predefined ideas of good and bad. It’s really interesting how they are extremely similar despite being polar opposites in how they act.

Honestly, and saying this as a trans person, I think it would be cool if the reason there's so much trans support is because in Gwen's universe, Peter Parker was trans. Of course I don't mind the gwen stacy trans headcanon either but I like this too. Let them both be trans. They're best friends and their dad is an ally. So is aunt may and I have no doubts about that

I went to see the film by myself and I'm in the UK meaning that no one made much noise. When I saw the Spectacular Spiderman it was only me and a 9 year old who pointed it out. I also loved Pavitr and Hobie, they were amazingly animated. And I loved this film.

This is very much a personal preference but I feel that most people prefer a quiet cinema experience so they can soak up the movie rather than being subjected to only being able to tell what's going on when the crowd isn't excited enough, just cause the moviegoers are quiet doesn't mean they aren't thoroughly enjoying themselves

I'm so happy i got to see this movie one two days before it leaving the cinemas. The room was basically me, my gf, and about 6 to 7 other random people. We all had some laughs in the start, but by the middle of the movie, everyone was so focused, no one made a single sound, not even the popcorn bag. And the best part is that there wasn't anyone behind me kicking my seat

Watching the movie dubbed saved me from the audio problem which everyone is talking about, support your country dubs. (It helps me that the pt-br dub is always awesome)

The animation is amazing, and I agree that some of the new characters introduced were awesome. I will say, I didn't know it was a part I until near the end of the movie, and I wish I had known that before. It was feeling quite long! (and resolving this story would have been a Beast in one film) In terms of story and theme, I feel like I can't judge the movie too much before the next one comes out. I want to see how they tie up the loose ends and finish the arcs.

Damn, did you watch this in a Japanese theatre the first time around? My cinema was half filled but it was super full of energy.

Detail I'm surprised videos I've seen don't go all the way with. Miles states that you can have your cake and eat it to if you have two cakes. Well he tries that, he can't webswing with two cakes occupying both his hands which ultimately causes him to ruin both cakes. He's probably going to have to realise eventually that maybe you really can't just have two cakes and have to make some tough choices
