I have to argue, Spinel's heartbreak was the worst. I mean, that's thousands of years of loyalty ending in not just a betrayal, but also the death of your best and only friend. Spinel's backstory is quite horrific.

Personally, I love how Rebecca sounds like such a shy fangirl herself when she's explaining her characters and world. Why do i have this feeling that spinel isn't the only one waiting for pink diamond's return

When it comes to the “poofing from strong emotions” I personally don’t think it should be a competition of sadness or trauma. Spinel was mentally very much like a child, it’s even part of her programming, so perhaps she was much more capable of poofing from stress than gems not designed to be emotional support playmates. Amethyst are programmed to be soldiers, Pearls as servants, Rubies as guards, and Sapphires as clairvoyants. Being highly empathetic would affect most gems in their ability to do their designated jobs, so they’re probably programmed to handle stress better than a gem that amounts to a toy/pet. Even if that isn’t the case, everybody, and every gem, handles things differently. The show stresses individuality among these gems that are supposed to be mass produced like objects. Not all Pearls are the same, not all Amethysts are the same, not all Diamonds are the same, etc. Stress and trauma shouldn’t be a competition, something that breaks one person can be tolerated by another. Heck. the level of emotion that Blue Diamond felt stunned all the other gems, but Lapis was barely stunned. Lapis and Spinel experienced very similar situations, but both dealt with it and recovered from it in their own ways. Gems, like people, shouldn’t be held in comparison to one another. I know I’m rambling by this point, but y’all get what I’m saying.

I love the concept of gems self-poofing from intense emotions, especially grief. I think it's wonderfully symbolic. And anyone who wants to argue that Spinel self-poofing means gem grief as a "competition," I'd say they have a very immature concept of what grief is, or how emotions in general work. Everyone experiences emotions differently, and everyone deals with their emotions in different ways--and "different" is not the same as "greater" or "lesser."

Homeworld gems say dissapated not poofed. Spinel: "You dont poof do you?"

Honestly, this all makes a lot of sense and I really appreciate these answers. They're simple and understandable. I do wish we could have seen Spinel getting everything, though.

The funny thing is, theories like this could be so simple with "she rotated her gem like in drift away" but you really dig inside how it happened and yeah.

I actually really like these explanations. With Spinel and the warp pad that does make the most sense, much more than her finding a budding rebellion if you ask me given that she hasn't interacted with other gems in 6000 years. Her being able to know where Pink's weapons were stored and then warping into range of the Earth makes sense. As for self poofing, that one also makes sense and I do like the idea you brought up of that happening to the Crystal Gems shortly after Rose left. Even if they didn't and Spinel did, people feel pain differently. They had more warning of Pink/Rose's death and had more time to come to terms with it and possibly prevent poofing while Spinel had to take in that information so suddenly along with everything else that happened while she was standing there. I can imagine such a shock of new information and grief and pain all at once could easily overwhelm her, since it's clear she never really understood other feelings than happy and playful or how to manage them. Either way, self poofing from emotion is something that I can get behind.

I think that in terms of extremes in emotions and the idea of “not being hurt enough” to poof is p flawed for a simple reason. We all have different pain thresholds. Spinel is someone who didn’t experience very much outside the garden or without Pink before being left there presumably. Whereas the other gems have over 6000 years of combined life experiences, a lot of them very difficult to deal with, to build up their resistence to breaking down. It doesn’t hurt any less, but they are better equipped to recover better each time. Not to mention those extremes can be manifested in different ways. Garnet infusing for example is probz comparable to dissipating because she literally can’t keep herself one person anymore. Pearl compartmentalizes her trauma as we saw in Single Pale Rose. Amethyst actually expressed herself even if she tries hard to bottle. Spinel’s entire reason for being rejected her and all she could do is try to tell herself that isn’t what’s happened for 6000 years. She wouldn’t be as well equipped to deal with that or know how to express it so it manifests the only way her form can manage and that’s to poof. Basically think of having a computer overprocessing and freezing.

I always noticed that the Crystal Gems look younger in the flashback episodes, which might be related to the whole sadness poofing thing. Gems don't age physically, but they can age emotionally, and I think their physical forms can represent that.

There's still one thing I don't understand: how come Blue diamond didn't poof out of grief when she thought that Pink was shattered? A flashback in the movie shows that her form was the same before Pink's "shattering" as in the rest of the series. I suppose it could be because she's a diamond, and they don't poof as easy. we saw evidence of this when Yellow zapped Blue with her lightning.

Ok so here’s my thing about the “don’t need to poof to get a new form” thing. In that old episode with the giant puffer fish gem and the volleyball, didn’t the gems change their clothes on command? Also in the episode where pear build the spaceship to take Steven to space! She made herself a spacesuit type thingy. Is that not the same thing as what spinel did (other than flipping her gem)? Correct me if I’m wrong!

I'd like to add that everyone experiences pain differently, and that situations can affect people in different ways. Spinel's pain isn't "more" than other gems because she poofed, but rather she had likely never felt negative emotions in her entire existence because of the purpose she was made for, being Pink's "best friend" and playmate. This was her first time experiencing something like this and when everything hit her all at once, it was overwhelming.

Id really like to see an extended cut of the movies with these scenes
