How Starbucks Workers DEFEATED Company's Union-Busting

Starbucks' union-busting scheme was exposed by the workers they hired to carry it out. Starbucks tried to spoil union votes in Buffalo, New York and Arizona by flooding stores with new workers. Then the company changed its training policy, isolating the new hires in closed stores and warning them about union “bullies.” But organizers with Starbucks Workers United fought back in a way the company didn't expect: by being nice to their coworkers.

The best organizer is a bad boss. Even brand new employees can see right through this company's propaganda. The bosses expects workers to be scared and obedient, but the workers start to see how powerful they are when they realize they can trust in each other. Solidarity!

Speaking of dishonest corporate strategies, have you ever noticed how nobody is an "employee" anymore? It's all "associates," "team members," "partners," "family," etc. Is this part of some corporate training to try to engender loyalty or something?

That's a partial reason, but these fluff titles is for much nefarious reasons. A professional title means your position has value, even in low skilled jobs. Ita no longer cashier, its "customer service", your not in shipping and receiving, you're a "team member".These meaningless titles is what devalues employees

I was fortunate enough to land a union job in my hometown, and when I was getting signed up, the people working the offices there were so friendly, especially when compared to my past work experiences in other places. All of them were very relaxed and completely content with their work, despite the fact it was actually a very busy time for them. The satisfaction of the union workers that comes with something as simple as a living wage and job security, things that are shockingly rare to find today, was all I needed to see before committing myself to the work.

I worked for Starbucks for several years and finally left a couple years ago. Throughout the 2010s Starbucks made a number of decisions that lost them money, so by 2017 they had taken full-time status away from once full-time employees, begun cutting labor from stores, and established micro-managey mandates in an attempt to make a place where everything is made to order by hand as fast as a place that's able to prepare items ahead of time for faster service. It looks like now all of corporate's BS has finally come back to haunt them and I'm not all that surprised. If Starbucks couldn't find enough labor and hours before, they aren't suddenly going to come up with more for union partners now, so this might not end well.

Until the work force unites against our greedy corporate ceos they will always look down on us as the common man who’s below them. We must unite together and only then can we bargain for fair wages and equal treatment at work. Any job no matter what level should be able to cover the cost of living plus food. People shouldn’t be struggling just because a job isn’t paying enough or they for some reasons got there hours cut out of revenge from an asshole boss.

I really hope you all get what you’re asking for. We all learn different ways. Some the hard way for failing to learn from others. Some do their research. They look into both the pros and the cons. It doesn’t sound like anyone here has informed themselves. Outside of what’s been told to them by the union and current staff. Or maybe it was just edited that way. I remember an ATT store that was going to go union down the street from the Mesa location their talking about. The employees were told how great things would be. No one did their due diligence. They hated the change. Employees were paid based on how long they were there and not based on what they brought to the table. Unions did nothing for those that showed up and worked. They would spend any amount of time getting lazy employees out of write ups. This only caused other to pull their weight. With additional expenses from the union headcount will be cut. Or they’ll go to a heavy part time headcount. It’s just math. It’s unfortunate so many of you need to learn the hard way but I guess that’s part of growing up. I wish you kids luck along your journey. Try not to repeat mistakes.
