I like strip till. We had a John Deere 7000 4 row with a Rawson coulter system on the front. There were three wavey coulters per row. Even in heavily compacted areas the corn did well. I'd like to set up a planter like this for my own operation.

How do you think them 3 coulters would do in grass?

@@jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754 we used to plant in old hay seedings but we would kill it off in the fall. It seemed to go through pen pack manure as we covered every acre with it or lagoon, sand manure.

Strip-till seems like the best of both worlds. The benefits of tillage, but only where you want it, leaving the rest of the soil to live. Not to mention the fertilizer placement, witch is huge.

Absolutely! Such a wonderful tool for the farm for both soil management and nutrient management At a local guy tell me that strip-till can't work on their Farm, and I said absolutely it can't because you got to get the seed that does not know that there hasn't been full tillage done. He looked at me with the funniest look of you little smart alec

I like that. Some larger farms been doing strip till around me (north east Iowa) for awhile. They farm every soil type imaginable and like it.

Nice! Other than a strange anecdotal experience I can't imagine how strictil can't work where conventional till can but ultimately help your farm be more profitable

This year here in nw ohio the till fields are winning over no-till. We will have to see how it finishes out.

I would like to try strip-till after we chop ryegrass in the spring to plant double crops corn into. But no one in the area has one to rent or hire. And at only 150ac hard to justify the purchase of one but maybe someday.

Hmmm... I wonder how something like this would work in life-long alkali ridden spots...
@jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754
@jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754 2 жыл бұрын
The soil people out by you say do not use tillage in the alkaline spots because it moves the water away too quickly and that's what helps promote more alkaline problems. They say whatever weed is growing to mow it do not kill it and get some alfalfa seeds out there because it's a high water use plant

What and how much fert did you band with it? With how bad the drought was last year, in my area even with how wet it's been we are still trying to build back soil moisture.

On the corn ground I ran 250 lb in 40 but I could easily do 350 lb Yes we need to get every drop of water that falls on our field into the field. Last year took a lot of moisture out

Do you have any sandy soil that your doing strip till on? Is it worth it on sand
@jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754
@jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754 2 жыл бұрын
I actually love it in the Sandy or soil. Since that large granular dry coarse soil has a hard time with fertility the strip till actually really does good. It allows us to get residue on the surface and get away from all the tillage so we get the benefits of no-till but we also get a better nutrient Management program. Our sand here also has a very poor infiltration rate so just like the other ground it helps get more water into the profile
