Nah Kakashi did a lot during the Hidan/Kakazu fight. He did really well I think, considering these two stomped the 2 tails, which is something I doubt that particular Kakashi could've done singlehandedly. Also, he had an emotional and wreckless team Asuma to babysit until Shikamaru got a hold of Hidan.

Honestly my favorite moments with him during the war arc are his fight with zabuza again that brought back the feels and his fight with obito easily one of the best hand to hand combat in anime.

Kakashi’s strength kind of progresses as the series goes, that’s how I’ve always seen it. He grew with Team 7, both in power and emotional depth. (Not that his entire history is devoid of that, he’s one of the most interesting characters in the entire show.)

Kakashi’s an all time favorite character of mine, manga or otherwise. I just think he was a “victim” of Kishimoto trying to have him keep up and participate in important fights. He's so good at everything that Kishi himself gave him low stamina + chakra eating sharingan + non-uchiha body. When Obito gave him DMS, man, he made Sasuke and Naruto look like amateurs. Kakashi and Itachi are pretty much equal in stats without using sharingan. But with sharingan, Itachi turns OP, while Kakashi constantly drain chakra while just having it not covered.

Someone already said it but I think a reasonable argument could be made that supports the idea that Kakashi is only as powerful (or weak) as the plot allows. Plus all the retconning and inconsistencies regarding his strength are pretty crazy. Why was he so much more powerful as a teenager? Like look at the flashbacks of teenage Kakashi during his Anbu days and tell me he doesn't look stronger. Why didn't he know he had the MS until Kishimoto invented it? Like there is no explanation. I wish you had touched on that. I agree about him getting smacked by high tier enemies because of plot, but I honestly don't think Sasuke would have beaten him during their fight. I think if Kakashi really wanted to and if it came to it, he would have used the Kamui to kill Sasuke (he had already mentioned that it should be him to kill Sasuke because he felt somewhat responsible for all the bullshit he caused.) As for other opponents, like Hidan and Kakuzu, he did as well as you would expect. He held off Hidan for a good while. Like who else would have been able to hang with that fight? Basically, Kakashi gets nerfs and buffs as the plot allows. I sometimes wish that they had let him keep the DMS and Six Paths Chakra just so we could see what a world would be like with three god tier Hokages still alive (Kakashi, Naruto, and Sasuke) but I understand why they didn't. That version of Kakashi is mental and in my humble opinion within the top ten strongest characters, may be even top five.

You do need to take into account that the Sharingan is far more taxing on the body for non Uchiha. The Sharingan is awoken by a special kind of chakra released under emotional turmoil in the Uchiha clan. Kakashi obviously doesn't have this unique chakra, so the fact he can use it at all is impressive.
