I think it's really interesting that this kind of converging storytelling really speaks to Jay because it's very similar to the kind of storytelling he uses in his long essays where he will bring out this esoteric tangent that you can easily put out of your mind but that's slowly turns back into the main point of the video and you realize that that random tangent had been relevant all along and I think that's super neat and interesting.

Yeah. Its not identical, as in undertale, toriels house was still introduced within the game, but it invoked the same feeling, at least for me. It's really not a big deal, it might have a lot of meaning to Jay but it's an inconsequential asset to anyone who's just playing the game normally and most people probably walk right past it because the waypoint is telling them to go to this cool alien facility.

I had this exact experience - almost. I was someone that bought the first Subnautica VERY early in it's Early Access, and I played throughout it's entire development. So unfortunately I never really got the experience of that story the way it was intended, as I saw the entire thing be built and evolve. However that gave a different experience of feeling like I'd spent years on this planet with no idea what the hell was going on, until the story was built around me as time passed. There was something completely different and magical about that experience, finishing Subnautica felt like the end of an era, as I'd legitimately spend years on this planet, not knowing what was going on until the home stretch. It also meant that I found the end of the game to be actually quite easy, as I already had a significant set of materials and bases built up. I was able to complete the final steps and leave the planet with relative ease due to my existing supplies. However, this actually made me reconsider how I wanted to experience Below Zero. I purchased it day one of release to Early Access, played the intro you mentioned and then uninstalled the game. I decided I wanted to wait until the final release so I could entirely experience this game in one go. I booked holidays off work on release day and was able to complete the whole thing in just a few sittings. I had almost no memory of the original opening, just the vaguest memory of starting on the planet, so the ending arrival I didn't have that same "oh shit" experience. However I feel like my experience of the second was directly influenced by my experience and knowledge of the first, and I find that so interesting. My experience of Below Zero will be entirely different to someone that first discovered the Subnautica series on BZ's release. It will also be different to someone that discovered it on the first ones official release. This is the same game with the same plot, but how you connect to it is entirely different depending on things that happened in your own life. That's why I think gaming is so special, and Subnautica really exemplifies that in so many ways.

You talking about your experience with seeing the old base was like mine when I loaded up Elder Scrolls Online for the first time recently, hopped into Vvardenfell, and saw Vivec city, a place I had visited so many times in the original Morrowind, still being under construction. It was so interesting to me, so see that this city that looked so impervious and invincible, once didn't even exist and had to be built by mere men (or mer/elves ig). It was pure nostalgia for a "brand new" thing.

Jay you should 110% play outer wilds if you haven't already. It has a similar vibe to subnautica in that the driving force is exploration but what's awesome about it is that the only thing limiting your progress is knowledge. No upgrades, no abilities. You just learn new information as you go along and use that knowledge to piece together the mystery of the game and eventually reach the ending. Seriously it's a masterpiecr

I think using the Early Access base as the design for Outpost Zero(?) was absolutely intentional. I never saw anything of BZ before launch, so to me it was just an abandoned research site with later story relevance. To ppl who played/saw early access tho, it a nice little Easter egg and clue.

Personally, I put down disagreements. Although I really loved the original subnautica, I didn't much love Sub Zero. Unlike the original, I didn't die once and I never really felt unsafe. Alan wasn't that interesting and his quests often took a long time to load for me. The Sea Truck felt very clunky and a significant downgrade from the seamoth and Cyclops. Maybe it's just because I didn't play the early access release though, so I didn't have all the same reactions. Plus I found site ø early in the game. I think you would have had a kinda different experience if you hadn't played the game on early access. Regardless, I'm glad you loved it Jay.

Just played through both games, and while I agree with that Below Zero is less scary, I think that is mainly a fact of which you play first. Although I do think that the Reaper is far more terrifying than most of the leviathans in Sub Zero, the Shadow Leviathan was actually really scary the first time I saw it in Sub Zero. Unfortunately the second time i saw it I had the prawn with a grappling arm, so I promptly killed it, and at the end of the story with defense on Sea Bus, it felt more like I was batting away a particularly aggressive dog and beyond being startled, fear had long since been drained.

@@iainmcdonalds4018 there's a video titled "How subnautica uses TERROR" that can easily explain this phenomenon, basically, in both subnautica games, the ambient isn't really that scary, they just appear to be, in both games you have vehicles that can literally let you survive stuff that will one-hit kill you, and what doesn't kill you in an instant often doesn't do that much damage, when you were first playing, you didn't really know that, so it was all scary and stuff, but the second time around, either in the sequel or in a re-play of the original, you already know everything, and thus it can't scare you anymore, the terror subnautica provides is good, but it only works as in so much as you are unaware of what's going to happen next

If you're basing this off of Jay's video, he doesn't show very much of the new stuff in Below Zero at all. Presumably to avoid spoilers for people who haven't played it? Almost all of the fauna and most of the flora are new - granted some are just reskinned versions like the Arctic Peeper. Some resources are different and all the resources nodes are different. The tech tree is substantially different, there are 2 new vehicles (only the prawn is recycled, and the sea glide if you count that) and several new base structures and modules. Some new tools and some removed tools. Honestly the number of changes and additions are more than sufficient.

For example the crashed ship and all it’s debris adds something to look for. The new game was just a open ocean that honestly felt very small. The other issue, arguably the most detrimental being the story gives u no direction. For most of the game it was just me wandering around and then finally looking up where I should be going.

And yet…this same kind of meta storytelling, where you try to plant references to future instalments long before anyone knows that those instalments are being planned, can backfire when too much thought is put into laying groundwork for the future, and not enough into making the current work (game, book, movie, etc) compelling on its own. I just saw a video on a defunct game franchise (can’t remember which one) that did exactly that. They made a game that was supposed to be just the first piece in a huge puzzle that was to include comics, movies, and books, and no one cared because the game wasn’t interesting. Edit: The game was “Advent Rising”.

Similar case with Dead Space. Was going to be a cross-media extrrrrrrravaganza (ye better have rolled those Rs for effect). But no one gave a damn about the extra content. It was a new IP. No one gave a crap about this unproven game series' extra material. So that's another facet of this phenomenon that's required for Jay's proposition to work. People need to be invested enough in the concept or no one will even notice the metanarrative. Subnautica was a well liked game. Its sequel had built in buzz. If it didn't, no one would have cared to play the beta for some random indie game.

@@raidermaxx2324 Uhh... Yes? That's... That's the point. The Subnautica guys probably didn't do it on purpose. The point of the video (that you maybe didn't watch all the way through?) is that it's more possible than ever with the help of the hype machine to construct a metanarrative. You know, do something useful with that hype beyond driving sales to end in disappointment. My point was that while it's more possible, it's still a high-bar to clear to even be in the position to do it.

I also did not realize Outpost Zero was the old base and it made "Below Zero" so much more awesome for me as the title. Everything built up to that one deep, dark, scary facility where you build Al-An, which happens to lie [more or less] below Outpost Zero; below zero. Coming up from the body fabrication facility to Outpost Zero, having the relief and surprise of seeing something familiar from another time, and making that connection blew me away! I must admit, I liked the original game much more as a whole, but the end of this one was epic.

as someone who played the game from the earliest release i strongly preferred the original story, i cared about my sister because of our interactions not because the game told me we were related, i cared about finding jeffrey because i wanted to solve the mystery of what happened just before i woke up, and i cared about getting alen a body because i had to hide him from my sister and altera. The final story got rid of all of that, i only wanted to find my sister because i cared about her from the original story, i only wanted to build a body for alen bc thats how the game progressed, there was frankly just no conflict to care about in the story

i didnt like BZ nearly as much as the first game, it had alot of cool ideas, but most of them were let-downs. Like the leviathans are all jokes, either not being scary, or being easily avoidable. The other creatures are too loud and scary sounding, which makes the leviathans less special by contrast. The story honestly sucks, there are several massive plot holes and inconsistencies and it seems rushed. The vehicles all suck except the prawn suit, which is now way overpowered on land. SOME of the biomes are beautiful though, and the music is nearly as good as the original. I also like how easy it is to get resources. It was fun to play, but not a great game in my opinion.

The leviathans in below zero basically behave exactly the same as in the first game. The key difference is the map is so much smaller, and they cram them into such tight corridors (crystal caves) that they needed to severely limit their wander/aggro range to compensate. Which leads to them basically being stationary objects that don't see you unless you swim right up to them. You never get the experience where you know the general area that the leviathans exist in but they wander around enough that you aren't sure exactly where they are until you suddenly hear a roar in the distance behind you.

If you enjoy seeing various bits of info converge into single moments, I'd highly recommend Outer Wilds. Without giving too much away, you're constantly gaining new knowledge that you can use to understand areas you may have already been, giving you that feeling you describe at 10:10 and "just needing that little tap" throughout the whole thing. Of course this means you probably shouldn't watch too much of it past what's on the store page and maybe the opening 15 minutes of another person playing it, but it's a masterclass of game design that only really works if you go in pretty blind.

While I understand that cool feeling you get when you see all these pieces come together in this "AHA" moment of realization, this is not a practice I would encourage in any sort of media. Putting some of the art outside the art is a great way to fracture and alienate your target audience. It the exact type of thinking used in the SW sequels of explained the origins of the First Order outside of the films. I'm sure for the people who read them first they felt satisfaction in knowing what was happening, but for everyone else it just felt dumb and incomplete. Having to look outside a piece of entertainment to provide satisfaction is not great design in my opinion. Supplemental materials should be there for people who want to know more, not to gatekeep the experience.
@CharliHarvey
@CharliHarvey 2 жыл бұрын
I think she meant it in a more subtle way, so that casual fans who haven't consumed extended media get a full story with all questions answered but the main piece or media / art is made in such a way that the people who have consumed extended media get an 'AHA' moment when they realise that they knew more than they thought. For example, maybe in an obscure comic some evil character (let's call him spangledabbler) was making a super monster with a massive trunk. Then, in a movie technically set in the same universe, a villain with a trunk shows up and the people who read the extended media aren't thinking about how the two might relate until at the end the villain dies in an act of sacrifice where, in the middle of yelling his big villain speech, he mentions the name spangledabbler. Most people would just assume that this was the villain's master (and that would be correct) but the people who consumed the extended media are given a thin thread (the 'nudge' jay was talking about) that connects both stories in one massive universe.

I think a good example of how meta information can impact current story is the recent Witch Queen trailer for destiny 2 and how we have information on the beginning of the next story event while we just started the current one, so now ever bit of dialogue and lore we get we question the implications it has when taken in context with the future information we have as a playerbase and the fact that the main talking point of both Witch Queen and the current season is a character who feeds on lies and deception makes every single detail worth scrutinizing over and omg I love it. Sorry think I got a little off topic maybe it's late and I'm super hype and wanted to type this somewhere and this kinda fit.

I had a very similar moment with the 3rd chapter of Bendy and the Ink Machine. Before the release of the 3rd chapter, the devs released a trailer of the MC running through a hallway from the main antagonist Bendy and hiding in a "miracle station" at the end. When the chapter dropped, the place from the trailer was nowhere to be seen. Then, when chapter 4 dropped, all previous chapters got an update with small new areas to explore and stuff like that. So when it launched I played through all chapters again and when I reached chapter 3 I stumbled about a new hallway that wasn't in the previous release. It seemed pretty familiar but I didn't connect the dots until I reached the end. At the end there was a destroyed miracle station with some inky text on the wall above it. I don't recall what it said, something alongthe lines of "Does this seem familiar?" or something idk. Blew my mind back than.

I'm certain there's earlier examples, but regarding Meta storytelling in a way similar to this: The earliest example of a game doing this that I'm aware of is Metal Gear Solid 2. All the set-up, the demo, the trailers, was about Snake. It made it appear as if Snake was the main character. And then when you switch to Raiden, you're Really not expecting it. And then the story winds up being, partially, about concepts such as the media manipulating people, and how misinformation can be spread.

You know, I'm gonna say it: If your game hasn't even gotten its main plot figured out yet then your game isn't ready for early access. Your game should not have a wildly different introductory experience to people who played it in EA than those who bought it after release. Your game should have pretty much all major things finished before you go to EA, EA should be a thing you do to get a load of bug finding and balance tweaking done. It really bothers me how many games use EA improperly, and it harms the games too. This kind of thing can split communities, major changes can alienate players who enjoyed things they way they were and resent major updates.
@Nuvizzle

To be fair, the first Subnautica used Early Access in the same way and it was really really good for the game. I seriously doubt they'd have ended up with a game as good as Subnautica was without all of the feedback and bug testing from an extensive early access period. If you're just honest with the state your game is in, I think it's on the people buying it to know what they're getting. However companies that drop a game on early access and call it a beta or something when it's barely a pre-alpha, or just outright drop development midway through and call it "released" should absolutely be obligated to refund everyone who bought in.

@@BrokensoulRider Actually no, it started as three scrapped biomes from the original game. And what happened to the original story was people didn't like it (it was a lot of "go here, do this" and Robin and Sam, who were supposed to be respectively in their late 30s and early 40s, talked like a couple of schoolgirls) and it didn't make sense (for example, why do you start with a blank PDA if you work here?).
