Target blocks are amazingly useful for simplifying and compacting redstone builds.

Wow, this was the perfect video for me. Short, to the point, easy to understand and even a timer at the top! And still you maintain a calm voice, don’t rush through the script and even joke a little. You couldn’t have done the video any better. Many thanks!

I just tried creating your dropper example, and I think it might be worth pointing out that it will only eject items down to 41. The signal strength is too diminished to drop the remaining items.

Good to know! If you're using this to feed a continuous stream of drops from a farm into, say, a bubble elevator, then it won't matter, but otherwise it would matter.

If the flow of items is constant then this is not a problem.

To clarify, you can still use the target block to compactify the circuit with no functionality loss (as in 1:30), but if you remove the repeater in front of the comparator (as in 1:44) then there will be some leftovers. Another advantage of the simplified circuit is that without the repeater adding delay inside the clock, the dropper will output items twice as fast (5 items/second), so it can keep up with 2 hoppers continuously feeding into it

Thanks, wondered why they were used in redstone builds, recently built a complex one build and the target blocks made me curious. This target block thing wants me to make my own redstone!

This is TREMENDOUSLY useful and tanks for telling me! I got back into Minecraft very recently, and the last time I played it Target Blocks did not yet exist. I am currently trying to binge your videos after coming across the Iron Farm Efficiency one, and I have wondered for a while why this block keep appearing in redstone builds.

You missed one other use! Turning on redstone contraptions with a bow remotely instead of having to build a long redstone signal. I just watched Docm77's latest Hermitcraft video where he let all the wardens loose on the roof of the nether ceiling because he didn't have a good on/off switch for the warden flying machine and was thinking the whole time that he should have used a target block to turn it on and off!

A question from a redstone newbie: how is it different from a Jukebox? As far as I know it's solid, redirects dust, and can be lightly powered, same as target block?

Sorry but that auto dropper design is really poor, not only is it bigger than if you had simply placed a piston after the comparator facing upwards and then the two observers, but it'd also stop when the dropper got below a certain threshold causing it to not dispense all the items.
@NicoisLOST

Sure, but the point of this was to show how target blocks simplified the footprint. Check out my clock video and you will see the exact clock you mentioning plus this one with a discussion about the differences and why you would use one over the other etc.. :-]

@@NicoisLOST Okay cool, however I feel like you missed the main point I was criticizing, the design is flawed because it won’t even spit out all the items. Pretty useless imo. I feel like as a red stone channel you shouldn’t showcase contraptions that are flawed at a fundamental level, because it can’t even complete the job it was made for. Just a thought. Because if I was a new minecrafter and I stumbled across a video like this Id probably be pretty bummed when the build I copied didn’t even work. Sorry for all the criticism but I feel it had to be said. Good video besides that.

I understood, but respectfully disagree. I use this dropper all the time in situations when emptying doesn't matter. For instance a trash can -- why would I care if it keeps 41 trash items in it. Or a auto chicken farm, if there are 41 eggs in the dispenser what does that harm me once it's gotten those first 41 eggs? Even for farm collection systems -- do I need those last 41 items right away -- probably not.. As mentioned before, my clock video shows both types, one that empties and one that doesn't, there is a place for both. I would say that calling the design flawed is an overstatement-- it's perfect in the right situations. Although, thanks for the opinion, let's just agree to disagree :-]

I have to agree with @Nico is LOST on this one. Clearly the purpose of the video was to illustrate the use of target blocks in compacting your redstone circuits, so even if the auto dropper was imperfect, it still illustrated very clearly how target blocks can simplify and compact the design :)

imo your concern only matters if the setup is being used for finite systems, like transporting items inside a community storage site. In this case of course if you throw 64 item into the dropper, we should expect it to spit out 64 item on the output side all the time. But for mob farms or other item farms (e.g. automated wheat, carrot, potato, sugar cane etc) with practically infinite output over time, this matters not. Besides, I think Nico covers this setup in another video already by now.
