I missed this seriesss, this episode is great! It's crucial to recognize that many 'bad' teachers are actually just overwhelmed, stressed, and unsupported. Educators have such a huge impact on our world - they're shaping the future in countless ways. Those in the education field are inherently passionate about learning, teaching, and showing empathy towards their students, especially when they first start. By providing them with the support they need, we can ensure that more educators maintain these qualities throughout their journey, helping children grow into well-rounded adults. It's truly amazing that you're using your platform to amplify the voices of these incredible humans :)

The deodorant comment means so much. I changed schools during 5th grade and my family was very poor and we didn't have deodorant (or other basic necessities). Everyone was leaving for recess and the teacher told me to wait. Once all the students left the classroom, she opened a closet full of supplies and gave me deodorant. At the time, I was embarrassed but now I"m just appreciative she looked out for me and she didn't forget about students like me. I'm certain she used her own money as this school barely had a library. I'm thankful.

Thing is that low income families are qualified for food banks and other programs, did your family not apply? Vancouver is known to be filled with rich and better off families, so even living in a city outside of Van I had so many classmates that were at the very middle class and their parents bought them so much stuff, like brand name clothes (Nike, tna,etc) but my parents took advantage of every charitable organization or benefits available and luckily for me the better off people living around me were charitable and donated to the very organizations my parents used... Ofc can't be compared to US where there's a higher population maybe you lived in a run down small town but it amazes me your parents didn't utilize food banks. That or your parents were bad at budgeting and they were wasting money on expensive junk food that they did not have money for

🚨REAL TALK: does anyone know what can actually be done within the system to change our public schools? Nationally, our teachers are under appreciated, underpaid, without support, over worked and the expectations are tremendous. The ones who are still around are either brand new to teaching and might last a couple years at this rate or care so tremendously about our kids that they feel compelled to stay in this broken system. Our schools, even in one of the richest counties in the country (KS) are under funded. Teachers are so uncared for that our children suffer from a lack of patience because the care for the mental health of our teachers doesn’t exist from the school boards and district. This has got to stop! Not every family has the opportunity to chose to homeschool their children. We have to change the system. For now, the community can continue to band aid the issue but I’m asking genuinely for an answer on the way we can come together and change the system in the most impactful way! With peace and love to our teachers! ❤ Thank you!

Support your local schools, by approving their proposed budgets! Remove ties to school funding that is based on the performance of how well their students perform on tests (if students don't do well, a lot of times that means decreased funding). Many schools have to focus on tests scores and not student learning. Stop supporting charter schools and other private schools that take public tax dollars from public schools and use them in the private setting. i.e. stop voting for a school voucher system. Many politicians are trying to privatize schools, which inherently leads to unequal opportunities and education systems.
@apocello42
@apocello42 10 ай бұрын
ALWAYS. VOTE. YES. ON. SCHOOL. BONDS. Even if you don't have kids. Always reject the privatization of schooling (charter schools, voucher programs). They talk a big game about supporting kids more but at the end of the day for-profit schools will NEVER have kids as a top priority. And that doesn't even touch on the terrible work environment the non-union teachers are forced into (look into teacher turn over in private/charter schools). Do not be fooled by "parents rights" activists. It's not about a parents rights, basically every state already has processes in place for parents to review curriculum, it's about controlling teachers and trying to keep marginalized groups repressed (i.e. what's happening in Florida)

Thank you for bringing this awareness. This is all so true. I go to bed and wake up worrying about other people’s children. I definitely spend more of my own money on classroom supplies and kid’s needs yearly than most anything else. Rent and groceries are probably the only things to top that. However, only $250 can be claimed on tax returns and if you try to get funding through the school for supplies you will probably never get it, it won’t actually be what you need or it’ll take months and a ton of paperwork. I’ve bought traditional school supplies but I have also bought winter coats, hats, gloves and coats, food, books in their native languages so parents can read with them, birthday gifts, furniture, etc.

The same happens here in Brazil. We have to provide basic supplies from our bare pockets to have the minimum to teach our kids. And sadly it goes from regular public school to private ones. If there's a professional that humankind is always in need, that's the teacher. Without us any other professions and careers wouldn't exist. Somehow, we just quit of thinking about getting any financial reward from teaching, but we need all the government and community support we can get. That's all we beg about everyday!

My dance teacher in highschool told us she had to flirt with people to get better deals on clothing items for our recital costumes. She was married, but she just had to rely on bartering

Parents who are able to really should be going hard on the administration to support teachers more.

thanks for seeing us teachers, cut. this is the most valued, underpaid job in this country. we are not just teachers. we wear at least 12 different hats that i can think of off the top of my head.

When did this happen? I started pre school in the 90s and they also made us buy school supplies to give to the teachers. Was this a thing in the 80s and 70s as well? When did the school budgets get cut so badly that teachers have to beg for supplies? I'm genuinely curious.

Schools still ask student families to donate school supplies, but especially for Title I schools, many families cannot afford to donate school supplies.

When I was a sophomore I got expelled from my home high school for fights and possession so my probation officer made me enroll in the probation high school every kid there has been to juvie and it’s basically their last chance to stay out most of the teachers there were (prob rightfully) uptight and unwelcoming but we had one teacher Mrs.Denney who was like the mom of the school and could get through to any student one day we came to school and a really sweet classmate of mine Marcus got shot and killed the day before. He participated in gang activity because it was what he grew up in and what he knew but like I said she got through to us and she was very close with him. She sobbed at her desk all day and told us we did not have to do any work today, she grieved him as if he was her own child. When I signed up for junior theatre and we had our show night, I mentioned it to her and told her I probably wouldn’t have anyone there to support me. She showed up dressed to the nines with flowers and everything for me after a long weekday of dealing with us “delinquents”. It makes me tear up. When I went on later to work as a teacher aide, I followed her example and loved my students fiercely, no matter where they came from. Many of them looked to me as another mother figure and I was so proud of the relationships I built. I made my little reward system based off of hers, and I saw kids staff told me for years were difficult and unreachable completely turn. You simply CANNOT over look the importance of the influence GOOD CARING EDUCATORS do for PEOPLE in their lives. I will never forget all of them like Mrs. Denney, my probation officer, a middle school janitor, etc. that had such beautiful no matter how small impact on my life as a troubled child. It was them who got me through. It’s them I keep doing it for, as family is limited. It is so so so much. These teachers have little futures in their hands and their investment is so steep they deserve all the praise and recognition

I can really see the passion and the commitment of some teachers, but coming from a different country i don’t understand the necessity of all this supplies, at the end it all came down to a pencil e a white paper, the rest is not that important😅 ( if my English is wrong sorry but is not my first language)

In my country neither do teachers nor goverment pays for school supplies, it all goes from parents pockets and I thought it was like that everywhere and that it was normal(still kind of do). Plus our classrooms look like shit.

We ask for better teachers but for less hours of school. We ask for better college education but to make it free. Teachers haven't really asked for much at all, just to be treated fairly and given a wage appropriate to the amount of influence they have on all of our youth. I've personally crossed it off my career list for solely an economic reason.

FROM A TEACHER: If you are a parent and want to donate to a teacher please ticonderoga pencils and crayola supplies. Other brands are cheaper but are not nearly as durable. I have been teaching primary in CA for 10 years. Also, my coworker who teaches 5th grade keeps a stash of tampons and pads. It's not always school supplies these kids need.
