Yes there has been big changes since the persimmon days. But we were still looking for little gains then too. My last persimmon driver I competed with, had a graphite shaft, and a carbon fiber face insert. That was high tech for 1992. LOL Great driver. I still have it. ;) My evolution of metal woods I competed with after that was, Callaway GBB, then into Titleist 983e and then into Titleist TS3. The ball has made a lot of changes over those years too. You definitely had to hit the driver more precise back then. You didn't get away with anything. It's almost like cheating now,... you can dial in a driver with the hosel, ...and the drivers are so forgiving and hot faced. LOL They are way more user friendly and easy to find something that works for you. We would have to root thru barrels of drivers and look for one that looked good and felt good with the waggle.. and then you went and hit balls with it for a few weeks to see if it was a keeper. LOL What a change since those days LOL

Thats because old drivers have tons of spin with just a little miss of center. Its way harder to hit it perfect everytime. Its the reason why im all for making driverheads smaller. The pros are not penalised for off center hits with those big heads. Go watch the older master tournaments here on youtube and watch how they work their drivers.

I just turned 50 and when I started playing I was around 10 (1982). I started out playing with persimmon and you’re right it was about that time that Taylor made came out with the “metal wood” lol. I had that Cobra driver and I think that’s the driver Tiger played in the late 90’s. I’ve never heard of those drivers between the Cobra and the Diablo. Those were impressive numbers with the persimmon but now go find a ball from that era and do it lol. The changes made in the golf ball have has as much impact on distance as driver technology.

So in the past 15 years (Diablo driver), there’s really a minuscule change. Especially considering none of those shafts were fit to you. Basically, you can pick any driver off the shelf from the past 5-10 years and expect very similar results. Fortunately for companies, golfers are dumb. And every year so many buy into the longer, straighter, better hype. Rinse and repeat every season. Yet never seem to get any better.

Very cool vid. Yonex and Cobra made great drivers in the 90s. You should consider doing a vid where you try different ball types from the past 30-40 years. Example: Wound balata ball, wound surlyn cover, 2 piece - 1 layer like the Spalding Tour Edition, Pro V1 thru the modern golf ball.

I started playing golf 40 years ago so I've seen how clubs have evolved and even seen some of the clubs you hit. To be frank, most of those clubs were "bargain bin" clubs that most didn't play. Ping was one of the last companies to make a persimmon driver. My dad used to play that in the mid 80s. Wilson, Big Bertha, Ping and Taylormade were the real big dogs when it came to many of those older clubs. One of my favorites from the early 2000s was the original Taylormade Burner Driver. It would be really cool to see how far you hit one of those. In my late 20's I used to hit that 310 routinely using Wilson Staff golf balls.

Micah, one of the biggest issues you faced with this driver comparison is that you hit mostly way off brand drivers. I grew up in the 50s, 60s and 70s and started playing golf around 1965. I played a laminated wood driver and could consistently drive the ball between 275-280 carry and 295-300 total. You used a Northwestern Driver, which was about as cheap a club you could find back then. Same goes through the years. Try again using comparable tour level clubs and you’ll see a more true comparison.

That wooden driver is not persimmon. It is a laminated maple driver. You can see the layers that were glued together. The persimmon heads were more expensive and had better "feel" at impact. I know...I was there! Also, try hitting the balata wound rubber band ball with that driver...it goes nowhere. I made a video on my channel using both (I still have all my clubs from the early 1970's including the Wilson Staff blade) showing this. Did you know Wilson Staff irons have won more majors that any other brand? Because back then almost everybody had them. It takes a lot more skill to hit that old stuff well and straight than todays equipment. I'm an old Geezer now still playing (.05) index and I enjoy watching your golf journey! Ignore the negativity...

His longest recorded drive in a PGA event was 341 yards in 1963 when he was in a long drive contest. It would be very interesting what he would do with todays technology.
