How terrifying is it to walk San Francisco's Tenderloin District? (Recorded June 6, 2024)

San Francisco’s Tenderloin District has a global reputation for high level of crime, homelessness & drug use. It’s true that Tenderloin has a homeless & drug problem that is so deep that politicians and activists couldn’t find a solution to end it. One thing I know for sure, most of the homeless and drug users you see on the streets or living in tents are from somewhere: they’re not from the Tenderloin, they’re not even from San Francisco.
Is Tenderloin safe? Would you even walk the streets of the Tenderloin? Here’s my experience.
I have been doing on-and-off volunteer work at the Tenderloin for 9 years and so far, I haven’t had an experience where I felt unsafe. If anything, Tenderloin is one of the friendliest, most welcoming & tolerant neighborhoods in San Francisco. When I was on the verge of becoming homeless, nonprofits here saved me. Tenderloin’s compassion saved a lot of lives.
Is it dangerous? It depends. It could be dangerous anywhere anyway. Nancy Pelosi’s residence is located in one of the most expensive areas in the country but her husband was attacked with a hammer right in the comfort and safety of their mansion. Remember January 6 attack on the US Capitol? This is one of the most guarded and supposed to be safest in the world was stormed by a mob of you-know-who. You’d be okay touring Tenderloin but I’m not saying that it is like going to Disneyland. Just like when visiting other places, it’s important that you keep your wits about you and explore the Tenderloin during daytime. I have to tell you though that the condition at Tenderloin is very sad, dirty and grimy. If you’re here on a regular basis, it will take a toll on your mental health. People high on drugs with their bodies folded or lying on the ground are a common sight. There’s a big chance that you’ll step on human wastes, used syringes, condoms and other trash. You’ll see drug-dealing out in the open in broad daylight.
BUT, food is amazing. Residents are friendly and always smiling and asking you how’s your day going. You’ll see and hear kids playing at the park. There are a number of fabulous bars. Tenderloin is right next to the more touristy Union Square and hip Hayes Valley, too.
There is certainly no lack of things to do at the Tenderloin. However, this is not somewhere you would want to live.
Tenderloin District, San Francisco, California, USA

I know they do, I've seen it at Kensington, they even put dumpsters there and the losers just dump trash on the ground. The do gooders just encourage the situation by bags of food, clothes, shoes and they take what they want and drop the rest on the ground. Then you know there are drug dealers there, where's the law and city government allowing it to happen, look at the closed businesses because of them. Don't know the answer other than bussing them out to an open field and dropping them off.

I walk through it every day to the BART station to get to work. Not afraid at all. Been doing it for twenty years. Coming home at night, not afraid either. The past few weeks, they have finally begun to arrest and the area is starting to improve, but it seems that everyone is just moving to a different location. Yes it is very very bad, and I've been lucky, but your attitude walking through makes a difference. Area gets a lot of lookie loo tourists that want to see it for real, and get picked on, especially when they take pictures!!! Oh well human nature. Great video.

For some reason I felt more afraid in Vancouver's downtown Eastside a few weeks ago. But that's probably because I know very little about the Eastside, but have been through the Tenderloin so many times that I'm very familiar with the area and the atmosphere. I probably would be pretty tense in Philly's Kensington area also.

Wow! I'm editing a story I wrote while in College - 1991 Sociology class, winter term, CSU Stanislaus to make an ebook out of it. For the class, all we had to do was stay in the McAllister Hotel (Timeline 8:40) x 7 days, the second week of January. The professor gave us an itinerary, places to serve like shelters, churches, we were to go out and observe, speak with seemingly displaced, interesting, people. Social services reps. We had many tours slated, like Delancey street and the restaurant, St. Anthony's church, free clinics, section 8 housing, etc. City hall was closed ex post Loma Prieta 1989 earthquake, which moved City Hall's dome about 4" off base and cracked the huge structure. We ended our week long stay with a visti to the Glide Memorial church - food line - kitchen and a service if we were so inclined. WOW. The service was uplifting. The choir was phenomenal. If we couldn't stay the entire week, there was no point in signing up for the class. We had to write an observational story - not a formal academic paper - to the best of our ability. Fine grammar waived. Photos (35mm back in the day), if we desired to share. I was thinking: quick, easy 'A'. It took awhile for me to digest certain lifestyles, vibes, experiences and write about them - we had a week to do that. I got an 'A' in the class - everyone who turned in at least 1,000 words, got an A. It was an interesting subculture in the Tenderloin. I'm going to leave my thoughts there. Thank you for your tour. I can't believe the McAllister hotel still looks the same. It looks a lot cleaner than I remember, too.

Thank you for sharing your story. I worked for an organization that had some connection with McAllister Hotel. I must say that it is well-maintained even inside the hotel. I was once told by the staff that their elevator is one of the oldest in San Francisco. It’s an antique elevator with antique grill doors. I’m thinking, decades from now my videos will tell their own stories, too. I’m glad that we have KZfaq to sort of serve like a time-capsule.

I was forced to take a driving break during heavy rain about 7 years ago. I walked from the financial district through the tenderloin after dark in the winter. I observed people lining up for shelter beds. And there were at least 40 persons about a block from services. All of them weathering outside were over the age of 70. Of coarse i didnt verify ages. I think elderly persons may have a difficult time getting services. We need to prioritize certain at risk groups that are basically disriminated against in our society. Oh! No one noticed. 😂

Folks that haven’t bathed in years, relieving the bodily fluids everywhere create a unique aroma to the area. It's a beautiful walking city with unlimited things to do/points of interest. I've walked around in multiple parts of the city, morning AND evening, without fearing for my life. I can say for sure that between the Embarcadero BART station and the Ferry building you'll see nothing like the Tenderloin. Same for walking between the Ferry Building and Pier 39 waterfront. I have to say this without offending anyone ok. I have always thought that America is a dream place that everyone are dreaming to come here, but I was wrong about that. I realized it now that America streets are very unclean full of Garfiti defacing all the street signs..especially in Oakland, Los Angeles, and most city are all like that. And the people who did all this garfiti defacing the city street side walk they don't get punishment unlike in Asian countries. In Asian countries..their government will not tolerate garfiti writing on the street signs..they arrested you and you will be kill..especially in China. In Asian countries most hotel or motel are clean and respectful with low cost unlike here in America. In America most people are mean not disrespectful against each other doesn't matter what skin color you are. They will treat you bad, simply because they just don't like you. Nowadays they are so many homeless people, and most people don't care anymore. They are only care for themselves and their love one.. that is all.
