Chris Voss talks about three broad categories that capture the types of negotiator most people fall into. In this video I speculate on which type of negotiator each of the 16 Personalities lines up best with.

As an INFP, I would say that I definitely lean into the accommodating side quite a lot though I also spend a fair share of time in analyst mode

INFP here, but honestly relate a bit more to the Analyst archetype 🤔 (or maybe a mix of both Analyst and Accommodator) Specifically, although I value accommodating all parties if possible, I absolutely hate making promises that I can't keep, instead I'd rather silently get something done without promising anything. On a second thought, I think I might be "Accomodator-first", but with Analyst always running on background to assess what's the most viable path.

My experience in negotiations is that logic very often of little use, I think the accomodator is probably the kind of negotiator who would get the most in most cases. They let you talk, understand what you care the most and build everything around it. The best negotiators get what they want, but let you think you had a win.

What I've noticed about INTJs is that they can work together with people who can't stand each other and even after a shouting match, they can walk in and offer a solution, or at least bring the discussion back to a matter involving tangible aspects (what people need and what we can provide) rather than emotions and ego... While they dislike token actions, they're not above doing them to achieve their goals. For instance, a boss might get really angry at his employees and run off during a meeting and the INTJ runs behind them with the glasses his boss forgot and then he asks his boss when they reschedule the meeting... (since it pisses the INTJ off when he has no idea how the time schedule of this very day looks like which... has already started many hours ago)

Would agree on the INTJ. I've come to negotiate because I (Te) need something to accomplish my goals, and you have it. It would be great if we could strike a bargain. And I can offer you XYZ things that you appear to need for your current goals. I don't need you to waste time stroking my ego beyond basic cues that you respect my position (not much point in negotiating if you don't take me seriously). I'm usually pretty good at coming up with deals, though I suppose some people might see them more as threats. I'm just really good at pointing out how you really want to collaborate with me to keep all the plates you're got spinning in the air. You might not NEED my help yet. But you're going to in 3 months when you run out of the ABC you were using or prices for the goods go up. Better to deal with me now when I want something from you than deal with me then when I'll be annoyed that you didn't deal with me now and strike a much worse bargain for you.

INTJ here.....I'd add that if you betray either me or, more importantly, the mission of the organization, I'll move heaven and earth (in the background and totally unseen by you) to get you removed from the organization. And you will know what hit you. I'll make sure of that.

As an entj, I think I’m a little bit of both: analyst and assertive. I’m not too skeptical or too aggressive. Although, I do play up my assertiveness when I sense that someone might be prone to crushing under pressure. If someone has better control of their emotions, I attack them Intellectually (because intellectuals have their ego tied to their intelligence). Huhhh! Just realizing, my negotiation tactics are not about winning people over it’s about making the other party believe why they should join with me and do as I say! Interesting eureka moment!

I'm an ENFP so definitely accommodating. I like to have a central idea 'let's go out here on Saturday' and I'll riff on all the options around that until I find one that suits us both. However, I am also (as Jeanette McCurdy puts it) an "opinionated pushover". I'll often get railroaded into something by the more organised ESTJ/ESFJs in my life and spend time trying to negotiate my way out of it but then cave to the hive-mind and will feel pissy about it. I wish I was more assertive.

Can't speak for other INFJs but I'm pretty sure I would quickly grow tired of the inevitable conniving behavior and just lay out all the bullshit everyone is spewing from a third person perspective. I would either get great results or none at all, most likely would never be in the position in the first place.

ENFP here. Sometimes I can be quite assertive when negotiating. I've definitely learned to be more confident and direct with time--I can definitely "lay down the law" with Fi-Te, and then respond with Ne to find a common solution that is most likely to keep people happy--I definitely have a deep and abiding fear of being taken advantage of, so I give less ground that I would have in the past. Remember, ENFPs use Te too!

Just a heads up which is interesting. Accomodators already exists in typology in Keirsey's Personology. They tend to be IxxP. they're reactive in such a way as to accomodate in a system. INTPS are strategic intellects for example but reactive. Building a system to accomodate others in the system.

I have been trying to find other true INFJs throughout history just to see how much nurture influences nature since I only know of myself as being one. It is a mistake to confuse Fe as a main focus for someone who thinks abstractly. Depending on what the situation is all about, that is exactly what one abstracts from it and then matches their attitude - therefore the term chameleon. It doesn’t come from accommodating people, but reading the situation and adapting to it. While you do want the best outcome, reading intentions and distinguishing honesty from fiction makes one a difficult “negotiator”. The ideal is integrity and honesty above all. Add Te as a blind spot, and you get a person who can actually disregard external “expertise” if they have not considered all angles/ideas when presenting a topic. So, all styles can be a potential match depending on situations and what hat those situations influence you to wear.

People think I care about being right, and being proven wrong just hurts my feelings. What I care about is finding the absolute truth of something (as much as can be done). So if you say something to deviate away from that, it's going to piss me off through sheer frustration of being deterred. It's probably bad communication on my part but I'm not trying to spar with someone, they've unknowingly become my partner in the pursuit of a truth. - ISTP

Interesting. INFJ. I value the often more long-term gains by accommodating. I tested (online) as INTJ more in my youth. I work with scientists and results focused strategic business leaders so that also shows some leaning toward analyst. I love data. My preference is to use both in negotiation, often shifting based on the other person's preferences but also trying to have the other (accommodating or analyzing) in my back pocket (or the records) as these things are often reviewed by someone else at the same time or in a later review. I have learned some of the value of the assertive approach and don't mind it in low risk situations. I tend to have more difficulty with extremes of this type as I feel that they often neither generate good will relationships but also may ignore facts or ultimate results so what they are pushing for may not even be the best solution.

Before watching the rest of the video, I guessed which types would be what. FJ = accommodator IT = analyst ET = Assertive IFP = N/A I think a lot of these would have a primary and secondary mode of negotiation. For instance, ESFP would probably be assertive, but it would be accented with accommodation as opposed to the assertive tactics of an ESTP that might be more accented by analytical modes of negotiation.

Love your videos, but have to disagree about ISTJs: they are assertive. ISTJ's even when healthy are very hard-headed about how they think things should be and very agenda-oriented. If an ISTJ is in a negotiation in which they feel comfortable asserting themself, they will pick a corner and require others to negotiate on their terms as to why it is an acceptable outcome in terms of the ISTJ's frame. In this respect (as many others), they are like ESTJ's.

Shock of all shocks. INTPs are "Analyst" negotiators. Who saw THAT one coming? 🥸 Personally, I hate negotiating. Haggling is tedious. Tell me what you want and what my compensation is to be, and then give me the option to either accept or decline. I'll do the same in return. Saves a lot of time and effort.

@@asvegas777ENTPs, always the chaos-monkeys, usually negotiate from a position of "I'm bored. How can I make this more interesting?," much as they do with almost EVERY aspect of their lives... 🐒 I can see ENTPs going either "Analyst" or "Assertive"... but I'd lean toward "Assertive," at least from an outsider's perspective, even if it's more "Analyst" internally. ENTPs often play mind games with other people, just for the amusement they get from observing how other people will react. In negotiations, I can easily imagine an ENTP making some borderline-outlandish demands, just to see what happens. ENTPs won't show weakness... unless it suits their purposes... and can be absolutely devastating negotiators. Nothing better than sitting back and watching as an INTJ and ENTP debate or negotiate.
