In this clip from his SILENT ACTION Blu-Ray audio commentary, tough-guy film expert Mike Malloy talks about how Italian crime films were rediscovered in North America around the turn of the millennium. In fact, the whole audio commentary focuses on the genre's fandom instead of being a traditional audio commentary.
SILENT ACTION is available from: www.fracvis.co...

I was all about Spaghetti Westerns, and didn't have a clue about Eurocrime. After I had digested about 200 Spaghetti's on VHS and DVDs I realized that the water whole had gone dry when it came to discovering new gems. Then I stumbled onto Milano Calibro 9. I was blown away by that one. The acting, the cinematography and the whole atmosphere was just amazing. I'm from Sweden and here (in Denmark aswell) crime / tough-cop TV shows like BECK and WALLANDER has always been huge, and I feel like the whole Eurocrime thing is somewhat of a forefather for that whole thing..

I was heavily into Giallos. As I looked at the fimographys of directors like Lenzi, Castellari and Fulci & actors like Milian, Testi, and Pistilli I saw the other Poliziotteschi films. What cemented my love was a 35 mm screening of Almost Human during a drive-in festival for Lenzi.

I discovered them in a similar way with going through actors roles in films, before imdb, I used a huge Videohound Golden Retriever book. That was my field manual, pre internet days! I also used tl scour used video stores for old stock and I would buy anything that looked action packed- hence DEATH RAGE, ITALIAN CONNECTION, MISTER SCARFACE, I started seeing a pattern of names and American gueststars and that really led me to delve into it more. Buying a cheapo vhs new of The Family, aka Citta Violenta, and knowing what to look for. Once I found a VHS of Cauldron of Death, excited that it was Ricco The Mean Machine I bought it, only to discover a totallly different tape in the sleeve! Budget comps also exposed me to the films, I recall discovering Confessions of a Police Captain and Crime Boss this way... so many memories!

Thanks for chiming in, Eric. As I reveal later in this same audio commentary, the "wrong tape in the sleeve" mixup got me too, but those were our occupational hazards as pre-imdb genre hunters, no?

I saw Violent Professionals on late night tv in the late 80s . I was mesmerized by frenzied pace of the action scenes. I wanted more! Although it was difficult to find then. In early 2000s my local video store in LA (MondoVideo Au Go Go) had a compilation of polizettio vide made by William Lustig. Slowly but surely the Euro crime films started seeing the light in DVD. Amen to the violent strrets of Italia

I was the Horror obsessive who also loved Giallo films and Spaghetti Westerns and checked out what else the directors and Actors did and Eurocrime became a huge Obsession it Rules and still is. And when your Fantastic Documentary came out i was very well versed and had saw many of the films and loved them!! And i also learned some interesting Facts from your Doc and it's my favorite Doc and I've seen it probably at least 20 Times! Keep on Rocking Mike!

Interesting; I honestly haven't met many people who discovered Eurocrime after discovering Gialli. Usually those discoveries are pretty concurrent. Thanks for nice words on doc. My next book is actually on David Carradine's "lost" directorial efforts. Titled DAVID CARRADINE: THE LOST AUTEUR. You can find socials for it on Instagram and Facebook...

I kind of stumbled into the genre when I found a DVD of Revolver in a second hand physical media store. I sorta knew about the movie because I too am a big fan of spaghetti westerns and of course Sollima directed it. As soon as the movie begun I fell in love with the genre and watched movies like Street Law and Almost Human soon after. There is also of course your doc that really helped me find some I’d never heard of and it happens often that I find a movie and recognize a scene used in it.

Interesting. The Blue Underground release of REVOLVER was one of my first DVD purchases in the genre too, right after a budget DVD of MISTER SCARFACE. (Of course, I had plenty of Italian crime VHS prior to that.) And I owned the REVOLVER soundtrack CD before I had even seen the film!

Rock-solid first release from new label Fractured Visions here in UK (I look forward to seeing what they do with Free Hand for a Tough Cop). Whilst far from being my favourite Eurocrime film, this presentation lifted the film in my estimation, and Malloy's input - as always - was helpful in contextualizing the film in terms of the filone itself. As a long-time fan of the (sub)genre, I get a bit pissed off at all the faux-cool, film-hipster attention cast on the genre by a certain film director (QT), but Malloy is the perfect antidote to such 'cine-cult' posturing. As usual, his contribution(s) to this disc are on-point and his enthusiasm infectious. I hope he stays with Fractured Visions for any and all future Eurocrime releases.

I was aware of Italian horror and sword and sandal films I had seen pictures of in Famous Monsters in the 1970s. Black Sunday etc. And Zombi I saw on VHS. But I probably did not see any of the films themselves (other than Zombi) until much later--I watched a Hercules (with Odysseus) vs Samson peplum one afternoon in the 1990s on tv. I didn't see Bava films until well after 2000. I didn't know anything about Eurocrime until ten years ago. I knew of Leone westerns and wanted to check out more Lee Van Cleef roles. When I watched The Big Gundown I became a Tomas Milian fan (unaware that I already knew him from The Agony and the Ecstasy--same situation with Rosalba Neri--I first noticed her in Lady Frankenstein and wondered who is this uninhibited woman? She has a scene with Charlton Heston in TAATE but didn't recognize it was her until recently). And then by following Milian I eventually saw ALMOST HUMAN (I knew Henry Silva but had not watched too many movies with him). People who think the Joker in The Dark Knight is a tough character--they haven't seen anything until they watch something like Almost Human or Caliber 9. But I also watch the peplum films, the Italian pirate movies--so I check out Lenzi work from the early 60s, the Zorro films, their Macaroni war movies (Commandos with Van Cleef is a particular favorite--great ending that has). Science fiction like Gamma One series, Eurospy, and the giallo of course. Modern movies are so boring.

Fuck yeah! I'm getting that DVD. Keep.kicking ass, Mike. I was a horror sicko that retraced my fave directors films. But it was also side by side with my favorite spaghetti western directors i dug when I was a kid. I guess the Westerns came first, since I was too young to see the gory stuff (that I loved). But I really think it came down to me being 15 and ordering a Video Screams catalog. They hyped EVERY movie. Almost Human was the first they hyped as ultra violent as any horror film, so I had to see it. Milian forever. Be safe, my friend

It's always interesting to hear people's paths to the genre, so thanks for yours. And btw, it's even better than a DVD; this SILENT ACTION release is a three-disc Blu (later to be followed by a one-disc version). The company is very worth supporting, because they've just announced their second title, and it's a Eurocrime film too!

@@toughandgritty oddly enough, it was also me getting in to spaghetti western soundtracks as well. I looked for the composers other films too. So I guess all three ways we're beneficial for me. But I will say that Video Screams turned me.on to literally every genre and sub genre ultimately. Thankfully I now own a Blu-ray player! I will definitely support that label

@@vaatlagaadungaa4244 That was just the norm back then and sign of the times even Hollywood would do it, also most of Alain Delon's French genre entries at the time had downbeat endings too well into the '80s that was his dramatic style unless it was the occasionally lighthearted story. Personally, I dig an 'open ending' that doesn't explain everything to you exactly why or how, it's part of the charm of these films I suppose why you return to them, maybe subconsciously hoping for a different outcome for the antagonist and protagonist... 😶‍🌫
