Yeah, I think something like 18 or 19 gauge wire (about 1 mm) works well. The trick is to find something that is relatively easy to bend with simple tools but that retains its shape. I've found good wire at the hardware store, but the art store sometimes has good stuff too, like the kind of wire they use for armatures. In a pinch i've used a lot of paper clips too which are a bit more stiff but still usable.

These are actually paper clips but I'll admit paper clips are not great to work with. I've made other things with 19 or 18 gauge wire and that feels like a workable thickness for me. 🙂
