When I was working the inspection bay at Tucson MVD in the early 2000s, a guy rode a GL1000 in for inspection. I'd been reading a lot about the original Goldwings, and there was a legend that the flat four was so smooth, you could put a quarter on its edge on the cylinder head, start the bike and rev it to the redline and the quarter wouldn't fall over. So I asked the guy if we could do the test, and to the amazement of both of us, the quarter didn't fall over. It didn't even wiggle.

I wonder if the flat BMW's are capable of a similar feat. The only thing that's put me off about those kinds of engine's and it's not like it'd be a deal breaker is when you're at a light and you blip the throttle and the torque about flops you over on your side, if it's not something you're used to and prepared for it comes as a pretty big surprise when it happens.

@@cruelty6368 Don't really have any experience with the SR 500's but I did have an '81 650 Special, it wasn't exactly what you could call the smoothest motorcycle when it comes to vibrations but it was 100% rock solid reliable, I consider them to be the Slant 6 Chrysler of motorcycle engine's, like the Slant 6 they'd leak oil but just keep on running mile after mile. Everyone thinks the engine is a copy of the typical British twins but I read not long ago that it was a license built copy of a German engine they'd bought the rights to the design from. About the only thing you had to do to them was keep the cam chain adjusted which hardly anyone ever did and they still ran great, adjust the cam chain and it felt like the engine had been rebuilt. I wish I could find one of those things in decent shape, I'd pick it up just for nostalgic reasons.

When I was editor at Clymer Pubs, I bought a GL1000 when it first came out. It came in Candy Red and a sort of sea green. At the time, I could only get the green one. After a break-in period, we tore it down completely for DIY photos over a 3-day weekend at Skip Fordyce Motorcycles in Riverside, CA. Once it was all together, I added a Vetter fairing, Craven bags and got it ready to ride cross-country to arrive in Boston for July 4th, 1976. After covering over 16,000 miles in the U.S. and Canada, the ONLY failure was the clutch cable which frayed, but didn't break. I think I replaced a rear tire during the trip as well. At one point, the GL1000 also got a Watsonian sidecar from Doug Bingham. Because of it's weight, it was a bear to steer with a sidecar so Doug designed and build an Earles fork for it which was like adding power steering. I traded it after a little more than a year and 35,000 miles for an R100S (with a Krauser touring fairing) and toured on nothing but BMWs until just before COVID. I'm 80 yo now. I added up the mileage on every road bike I've had and it comes to over 600,000 mi. Two of my BMWs earned 100,000 mile badges, one of them turned 120K in Inuvik, NWT above the Arctic Circle. I never had any interest in later Gold Wings, but that original has a special place in my motorcycle memories. Smooth, powerful enough, totally reliable. Everything you needed touring empty Western highways in the days before cell phones and GPS.

The smoothness and comfort of the GL1000 still impresses even today. Just in case I feel the need to ride something a little different I have a 1979 CBX1000Z which is equally impressive in its own ways. And for local runabout duties I have a little 1972 CB175K6 which is great fun. I have a lot to thank Mr Honda for.

In 1977 I purchased a used 1975 GL1000 for $1300 with about 6,000 miles on the odometer. I added a Vetter fairing (with optional cigarette lighter) and some funky, ripstop saddlebags, and left San Francisco heading north to Canada. I rode up to Victoria, then east across the Trans-Canada Hwy. all the way to New Brunswick. I remember racing a Porsche 911 through the Canadian Rockies, and leaving him in the dust, as I was able to roll on the throttle in 5th gear on steep grades, and accelerate endlessly. I remember effortlessly cruising along the highway and across the great plains with one hand on the handlebars, while puffing on my Marlboro's behind the tall windshield. I crossed the border into Maine, and continued south to stay with friends in New England and Virginia. I left the east coast and headed west on Hwy 40 (route 66) across the southern states after leaving myself with only 5 days to get home. I made it from Virginia to San Diego in 2 1/2 days, averaging 70-80 mph in temperatures reaching 105, only stopping for an occasional quarter pounder with cheese, to save time. I visited a friend in San Diego and couched surfed for the night, then rode up Hwy 5 to San Francisco and home. The bike was a marvel, and only needed an oil change and new rear tire during the entire 10,000 mile trip. The only issue was that the gas tank only held 4 gallons. So I was forced to stop for gas every 100 miles or so! That's a lot of gas stations. After I got home, I needed money for college and sold the bike for $1200.

I have personally believed for a long time now that if Honda had implemented the automatic transmission at the inception of the Goldwing, they would have created a class of motorcycle that other manufacturers would have been stupid not to replicate. When the Goldwing got the auto trans, it became what it always should have been: a massive, opulently luxurious scooter.

Back in the '90s I rode a Yamaha Seca II and a friend had a 4-cyl Goldwing Aspencade. He usually bought sportbikes (he once had a CBX) and custom Harleys, but his last bike, a beautiful Sportster, was too much of a pain for the weekly rides back home to Vegas every weekend from LA where he was attending school. Both being fans of the TV show M*A*S*H we decided to go to Malibu Creek State Park, where they filmed the series. It was going to be a nice ride up the cost then a little bit in the twisties to get to the park. For part of the ride we decided to switch bikes and that's when I nearly dropped his GW. We were coming up to a light and I was a little too comfortable - heat on my legs, no wind blast, a drink in the cup holder and some great tunes on the radio. I was so comfortable that I must have thought that I was in a car because I forgot to put my feet down until the very last second! When he moved back home he didn't need the long-distance capabilities of that bike and decided to put it up for sale. He listed it for I think $1850 OBO, hoping to get maybe $1400. I came over and we detailed the hell out of it and all of a sudden he was regretting listing it so low as it was now worth hundreds more - the transformation was incredible. The first guy that looked at it wanted it and tried to talk him down in price and my friend refused. Being a man of honor he stuck with the $1850 price instead of trying to raise it or pulling the ad to relist it for more. If I ever need a bike to cover some serious miles it would have to be a GoldWing. I remember going to the Honda dealer back in '75 when the model was first introduced (my dad rode a CB360 at the time), but my experience with my friend's Aspencade on a few rides convinced me that this bike has no equals.

As a teen, I would have loved to have owned a Rebel or 250 CBR to ride around town on. As an adult, maybe something bigger and faster, or longer legged to go long distance. A good friend of mine just bought a Honda Valkyrie Rune, a dream bike of his since he was a teen. His is the second I have seen in person and first to see up close and hear. Even when they built a road legal custom cruiser that is a work of art, they made it work reliably and well!

In a sense this bike was my introduction to motorcycles. Back in the mid-80s when I was a kid my dad had one and I spent quite a bit of time on the back seat. As it happens I wouldn't start riding myself for another 30 years, and while I'm definitely several tax brackets shy of being able to own a Goldwing myself, I can still credit it with being the initial spark that would end up in me riding now

The tyre thing probably IS true, at least I'd not be surprised if it was. Unless Honda have outright said it was not the case, you'd have to think it so. Why I say this, is that Honda were NOT the first 'old world' manufacturer to aim at American big touring type machines, and hope to release a competitor, to dethrone Harley Davidson as the bike of choice for hardcore rider looking to spend long hours and crush many miles, in the saddle. There were a few ideas, but the most complete project was by Ducati with their Apollo. This machine predated the GoldWing by almost a decade. It bore a massive, for 1963, 1300cc V4 engine, putting out a crazy 100 BHP. The Moto Guzzi V8 GP bike of that era, in comparison, only made just shy of 80 BHP, which was 20 BHP above the upper echelon of very best performance machines of the era too, and 25 BHP more than the most powerful Harley of the time. The issue however, was that NO tyre company at the time, could make a tyre which could handle that kind of HP. Not for a motorcycle, as there was only so much rubber one could use to fit that kind of machine. Muscle cars were a thing, and making tyres to handle big HP was possible....just not one you'd be able fit between a frame or forks. The tyre shredded at speed on the first High Speed test run, the test riders survival classed by medical personnel at scene, as nothing short of a "Miracle". They detuned the bike to 75 BHP, and STILL had a huge tyre failure rate. Ultimately, they had to detune the engine to 58 BHP, get torque down, and totally neuter the nature of the machine at its core, rendering it unfit for purpose, out performed by the best British and German offerings. Ultimately the project went nowhere, undone by the tyre technology just not being able to support the project. Interestingly enough, one of the two prototype bikes wound up in Japan after the end of the project, and except for brief few years at Ducatis own museum, has resided there ever since. It would not be a leap to suspect that Honda knew of the project, and more importantly, WHY it FAILED, and went out of their way to ensure the same fate did not befall the GoldWing project.

I'd say 80% of the videos I watch on KZfaq are motorcycle related. (R.I.P. Jeff "Ol Man Ronin" Snyder) Many of those videos are a similar format. The producer riding his or her bike, 2 cameras, talking about the motorcycle or the company or some new accessory they are checking out. Then you have a few good globe travelers with multiple cameras, perhaps a drone and a little bit of talk about the bike, but more of what they discover along the way- Itchy Boots, Motorcycle Travel Channel, On Her Bike, RideBDR.... Then you have some really good, well researched and presented history, tech, riding skills channels. Fortnine, Tripp On Two Wheels, Wheels Through Time, Jerry Palladino, Different Spokes... Bart channel, in my opinion, stands by itself. The wide variety of subjects, the vintage footage, length of video, presentation in general. Bart has great formula. My favorite motorcycle history channel. Kudos to you, sir!👍👏🏆🥂

My dad had a 77 goldwing traded his Harley for it. They gave extra money for it. It was enough the he full dressed it.Then rode the tires off it, and put 100k miles on it in 2 years. He was so used to his Harleys needed so much work I remember him saying he thought he put to many miles on it ,and needed to sell it. Looked at it asked if it used oil he said "not a drop ". So I traded him a Subaru for it. One of the best bikes around. Rode it another 200k.

I moved through a few cruiser bikes 750cc, 1500cc doing about 5000km a year to moving up to a Goldwing and doing well over 10,000km a year. It really is the bike to take on a trip. My wife, who only spent a few hours on my Suzuki 1500, spent 2 weeks on the back of my new to me 2009 GL1800 Airbag model. Happily chatting, playing music through the bluetooth, and pointing out the sites, as we did a 5000km trip to Canada's East coast. There would have been no way we would have had luggage space, or enough comfort for either of us to make that kind of trip on a motorcycle previously.

I grew up in a Honda household, when I was young there were CB250s, CB750s, a GL500 Silver Wing, and in the early 80s the grand daddy Gold Wing, my Dad then ran through a CB500, a VFR750, three VFR 800s, a Pan European and then the horror a BMW GS1200R and F800, finally a Yamaha MT09. Not one of those bikes was as fascinating or talked about as the Gold Wing. Whilst it sat alongside some faster and definitely more fun bikes it took my Dad around Europe without skipping a beat, it dealt with every weather you can imagine and returned home with a stack of miles added to it but it behaved no differently. Only the VFR800 held his heart in the same way, that went from the northernmost tip of Europe to the southernmost tip and provided a more spirited ride than the old Gold Wing. Sadly my Dad had to hang up his riding gloves at the start of this year and it now rests on me to continue the legacy, I can’t say he’s ever approved of my slightly ‘sporty’ approach to biking and my R1 was definitely frowned upon, now I’m leaning towards more comfortable rides, maybe it’s time to find an old Gold Wing and see if it’ll eat up those European roads like my Dad’s did? Nah, my wrists and back don’t need coddling that much…. Yet.

In 1997 I bought my GL1500 SE at age 35. I put 38,000 miles on it the first year while working full time and had 4 other bikes in the garage. Needless to say I rode it to work nearly every day and went on various tours on the weekend. I'm down to 2 bikes now - an ST and the 97 Wing. I'll always have "Oh Dear" Wing and it has always been my go to bike for long tours either solo or 2 up pulling a trailer for week long excursions. Nothing like rolling up on inexperienced riders on sport bike through twisted and swinging by with the external speakers pushing out some SRV. And if I ever had to part with my Wing, I'd replace it with a new DCT. If you've never ridden one, I'll just say it is like riding a huge, comfortable and powerful machine not unlike the Lexus LFA.

The Honda Goldwing is counter to everything I like about motorcycles. To big, to heavy, to many comfort features, so over the top etc etc. But then again it is so well executed that if I was in the market for a cross country tourer I don’t think I would look anywhere else. No Harley could compare. It like comparing a Winnebago and Prevost bus. You almost make me want one.

I had a 1980 GL1100 in the late 90's and it was what we used to ride around everywhere on with our best trip being from home in London all the way to Cornwall for the solar eclipse of 1999. It was a basic, naked version and with the exhaust tips hacksawed off it had a really nice, subtle sound that wasn't too lairy and in your face but other road users still knew we were there! I loved that bike and was gutted when it got stolen and torched but that was part and parcel of living in scummy London at the time! FUN FACT: one day as I arrived at work one of the throttle cables snapped so I ended up riding it home using the choke as a throttle! I would have another 11 or even a 12 in a heartbeat but for some reason the looks of the 1000, 1500 & 1800 never appealed to me. Thanks for a reminder of what a great bike I once had.

I 100% respect the Gold-Wing riders more than the Harley Boys... at the very least you are getting a proverbial couch with two wheels with the Gold-Wing and if you ever wanted to tour... I cannot think of a nicer way to do it. I want one and I just started riding motorcycles. Right now if I buy almost any other bike and want to travel there is so much extra kit you have to add... with any Gold-Wing.. nope, it's smooth sailing!

Craig Vetter was probably the one responsible for Honda putting factory fairings on the Goldwing. Riders were equipping Goldwings with Vetter fairings a couple of years prior to Honda providing their own. Why miss that share of market? Vetter fairings were good quality and I had a couple of them on my bkes. I also owned a Goldwing 1500 for many years and rode it across the US a couple of times. (WA to FL and back). Honda got it right for a big interstate gobbling bike.

I have owned two GL1800 Goldwings. My first was a 2003 model with over 130K miles when I sold it. I pulled a popup camper on my first long-distance ride to Yellowstone from NC. It was a great ride. I really came to appreciate my Wing on that ride. But I had ridden with three other riders on Harleys, which badgered me all the way out and back about getting a Harley. I knew I could ride further than they could, faster than they could, and more comfortable than they could, but I did give in to peer pressure. I have had two Harley's since that ride. I currently have a 2007 Harley Ultra Limited. I have poured a ton of money into the Harley to make it more comfortable for my wife to ride. But she hates it. I do enjoy it, but I missed riding with her. So I bought my second Goldwing a few weeks ago. It is a 2006 model with only 37K miles on it. Man, is it ever nice. Honda has done many things between 2003 and 2006 to make this a better machine. My wife is riding with me again, and I really have very little need to hang on to the Harly. You cannot get a better mile-crunching bike for the open road than the Goldwing. Thanks for making this video.

I was gifted an old GL1200 Interstate and put about 7500 miles on in the first year, then it went into mothballs when I had to move. Ended up giving it away. Then I bough a 1995 GL1500. I put 32,000+ miles on that the first 18 month. I only got to ride it 7000 miles the next year because of work before my handle bar controls went out. On one of the Goldwing Forums I visited before finding mine, I was looking for safe miles for purchase of a used bike and there were very many with well over 100,000 miles, many with over 250,000 mile, quite a few with over 500,000 miles and even 1 with over 1,000,000 miles on his Goldwing. So yes, I would say if you want the ultimate in open road cruising experience, the Goldwing should be your choice...hands down.
