What if the internet, a seeming beacon of human advancement, shares more in common with one of its byproducts, pornography, than we often allow ourselves to believe? Through his provocative, yet methodical examination of the issue, Ben Goodfriend pushes us all to reconsider the internet’s facades and more generally, our digital consumption. Ben Goodfriend is a sophomore majoring in the Interdisciplinary Project in the Humanities (IPH). He grew up in Bethesda, Maryland, where he attended Landon School from seventh to twelfth grade. He enjoys playing sports, strumming his guitar, and spending quality time with friends. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

The root of all addiction is approval, on the surface its the approval of others, but dig a little deeper and you'll see its the approval of yourself you seek. The love, acceptance and respect of yourself. Im a 22 year old man and I just fully realised and internalised this idea today, it's never too late, and I hope you have a great day!

There is no such thing as approval of others. It’s an illusions. An external force (a voice) says, “hey your great” your mind then grabs that an synthesizes. The way it gets synthesized is based on how your mind works. For me, an INFJ, my introverted intuition decides weather or not it’s a genuine answer with help from the extraverted feeling. If it decides it’s a genuine answer, it gets taken a layer deeper to my introverted thinking, in there it will use extraverted sensing and Ti together to understand deeper WHY this was said and how it matters in the external world. It’ll say like well this matters because I live in a society with expectations and I want to meet those expectations. But the thing is the mind doesn’t know the difference between what is external and internal. Affirmations. If you tell yourself that “you’re great, you’re an awesome person” it will process in the mind as if it were real. This is why the approval of others is an illusion. Because it’s my mind that does it all. My mind could have disapprove the persons comment, even if it was genuine. And it could have approved it, even if it were a lie.

My thing with social media is like...i've now seen what's possible. Because if others are doing it, it must be possible. So if it's possible in life, why cant I do it? So it's kind of inspiring but in a depressing way because you have to simultaneously realize you may not attain it.

the only reason one cannot attain their dream is if they convince themselves they cannot

Yeah you're right, you can see what's possible. but that's exactly it: you can SEE only with your eyes. A lot of the other details are missing online in social media. Do you attach certain feelings and emotions that you assume those people are having? for example when you see some millionaire with tons of girls in bikinis and a yacht.....I might assume they're having a great time and loving life ....whereas maybe they aren't. maybe they're miserable, doing a lot of coke, have serious health problems and suffering from depression

Yup. I chose his second option: don't participate (in social media). At least in 2020, you ARE seeing SOME celebrities post "basic" / unfiltered TRUE images of themselves, that are NOT perfect / idolized.
