Holocaust survivor Werner Reich recounts his harrowing adolescence as a prisoner transported between concentration camps - and shares how a small, kind act can inspire a lifetime of compassion. "If you ever know somebody who needs help, if you know somebody who is scared, be kind to them," he says. "If you do it at the right time, it will enter their heart, and it will be with them wherever they go, forever."

Painful to listen to a lot of this and even more painful to see it being still practiced, instead of learning from the moral of it: if only we could be a little better and do only a small good thing in life... Great man. Inspirational speech. Hope TED comes back to its roots as some of the newer clips like this are showing up.

What an inspiring story. I have spoken with many survivors of the Holocaust and I am always struck with how they survived. That to me is more important than the evil that was done although I would hope that we never forget how that kind of evil ascends to power. His angel was a magician. Who's your angel? Who will you be an angel for?

Thank you Mr. Reich for your touching and inspiring talk. Therese of Lisieux's autobiography came to mind while watching the video. Though written from a religious point of view, her discussion on love of neighbour is enlightening and edifying. I remember her saying that even just a smile is enough to gladden a human soul and that one benefit of being kind or charitable to others is the expansion of the heart leading to profound sense of peace and joy. Religious or not, let's endeavour to practise charity.

@Ella to be more accurate i dont believe god or gods exist definitly not any of the gods humanity has created ( there are thousands). Now how do you know there is a god? If so which specific one and why must that one be the one to exist? The burden of proof is in the positive claim, not the negative. In addition what does death have to do with figuring out if there is or are any gods? If there is why would anyone of them care at all if a human dies?? Why would being who created and runs this vast unimaginable universe 96% of which we cannot see or interact with care much about what happens on an in significantly small blue grain of salt in the universe?

@@hendrixfirstone8975 It is profoundly sad that some ignorant people mock the atrocities of history, they lack the emotional intelligence and empathy to honor and respect others. I remember reading the story of Anne Frank when I was in grade school and it made me cry. That people such as this incredible human being could survive something hellish and beyond our comprehension, and be such a kind and loving person afterward, is miraculous. Perhaps someday humanity will become a kinder and gentler species. Perhaps we will learn not to repeat mistakes of the past. Perhaps.

And with a quick google search that you're too lazy to do apparently, I found this info. I found an article about him from 2010, 10 years ago, stating that he was 83. That means he is, in fact, around the age of 95. Now, next time, do maybe even the littlest amount of research (this took me 10 seconds) before making assumptions like yours. Maybe you could learn something about him about being kind before calling him a con artist.
