How the Phillies Became the Dominant Philadelphia Baseball Team

The Phillies were not always the dominant team in Philadelphia baseball. This is the story of how the Phillies went to the brink of financial ruin, but restructured and surpassed the Athletics as the dominant team in Philadelphia. Out of the 1940s, one team survived, and one team left. The Phillies had succeeded in modernizing their talent recruitment system, as signified in the Whiz Kids winning the 1950 National League pennant, while the A’s went bankrupt and left the city a shadow of their former selves.

I remember listening to WIP during the 2008-2011 Phillies run. Anthony Gargano said that the Phillies were always the baseball team of Philadelphia and me as a young 20 year old was shocked he, a sports journalist from Philadelphia, wouldn’t know about some of those great Athletic’s teams

Seriously, from 1901 until the A’s moved, Philadelphia was an American League city.

The '29 A's were considered the greatest team ever. When Mack sold the infield it was called the Million Dollar infield.

That’s because they only think about the time they spent watching the game and not acknowledge the history of Philadelphia sports. I’m fairly young and a lot of friends I grew up with knew about Shibe Park but only think of it as a former Phillies stadium of yesteryear. They didn’t know that the only Philadelphia sports dynasty was the A’s.

I am 56 and remember being told about the A's and other older teams and their history as a kid. Also remember when the Phillies were so bad in the 1970s they would open the gates of Veterans stadium and let people in for free but you had to sit in the lower seats because they didn't want people watching the game on t.v. to think no 1 went to see them play. 😂😂 Oh that was a fun time 6:00 6:40

Very interesting video! Sometimes, seeing extreme hitters and pitchers parks, I can't help but wonder how much of it gets reinforced by this knowledge. Example: Did the Phillies look for hitters and neglect pitching because they knew they were in the Baker Bowl, and the reverse for the Dodgers after they moved to LA? Do things like scouting and the knowledge of the field exaggerate those effects?

I believe the Phillies recruited Gavvy Cravath and Cy Williams because they were left handed power hitters who would take advantage of the Baker Bowl. Just like I believe the Red Sox recruit right handed power hitters.

I think if the A’s stayed I would have been a A’s fan. But I’m a Red Sox fan because I love Fenway Park and I wish I could have seen a ball game at Shibe Park. I love history and tradition. The Sox do it for me. I’m from south Jersey and I’ve always had a hard time liking Philly sports and knowing that the Philadelphia faithful chose the Phillies over the A’s is kinda crazy. Like how can you not make money winning championships? Philadelphia sports dynasty that will never be remembered by the contemporary sports fan. Is just sad 😔 Philadelphia could have been like Boston and New York. I’m sorry but 1980 and 2008 are not enough to deter my opinion. Especially since after the A’s moved to Oakland they became a dynasty again and then another in ‘89. We fucked up as Philly baseball fans and a statue of Connie Mack won’t make up for it.

Maybe in ten years we'll look back and talk about how we're glad that Middleton finally fixed that problem for the Phillies. He's certainly publicly stated such and his actions (and whole front office, obviously) support that he's trying. 🤞

No mention of the racism -Jackie Robinson comes up in 1947. First black player of consequence on the Phillies is almost two decades later. Dick Allen -a rookie in NINETEEN SIXTYFOUR

The Phillies displayed more than their share of racist attitudes and behaviors back in the day. Ben Chapman and later John Quinn, to name two.Former manager Chapman was an unabashedly avowed racist. Quinn is the former GM who refused to sign black players.
