That's really cool! I'm honestly most curious about how they arrived at 5/8 for the arrangement. I'm always very intrigued by their compositional process.

@@twominutemusictheory Yeah, it's amazing to have access to lessons from such masters. I think I know the reason for the 5/8 already: The way Tony Rice played the guitar riff over the bar lines of the B-part. It can just as well be counted in 5 as in 4. As a matter of fact, the chord changes of the B part of the Punch Brothers version match exactly with Tony's version all the way up until the pause before he says "hell on church street blues". If you follow Paul's bass line closely on the final repeat of the B-part, he fist divides it at 5/8 and second time at 4/4 like Tony.

On second thought - I take that back; They don't match. But Tony does slur the downbeats in his riff in a way that can be interpreted as 5 for a brief moment. I think Chris just took that thought and carried it through. I'll write back some of what Noam says. (and for anyone considering his course: Join! It is an amazing learning environment for banjo players on all levels)

​Hi @@twominutemusictheory I had a bit of back and forth with Noam on this tune now. He's not the composer, so he spoke more from the arranging standpoint, but he gave a half hour feedback on the tune. The main issue for him was to come up with a roll that could be used and embellished upon for variation. He gave some tabs and very interesting feedback on that. Basically he uses the one roll with a syncopated 3-bar variation possible on the cases of three-bar Bb. On the video you can hear this in the intro on bar 2-4. He also does a cool small triplet variation that he uses freely whenever he feels like it.
