Simracing is difficult. Learning how to drive fast takes time, dedication and persistence. Assetto Corsa Competizione is one of the best simulations with highly sensitive aerodynamics that want to be respected. Telemetry, such as motec helps with analyzing car behavior and finding major issues in the car setup or driving style. Special sim racing hardware also helps with becoming better, but certainly is not _the_ solution to your problems. Load cell pedals offer better feel. Stronger but most importantly more detailed force feedback of e.g. direct drive wheels offer more immersive sensations. Though I know and I've seen throughout the years, people with entry level hardware perform on top level.

Though Simucube Active Pedals is beyond average person’s reach, I find this is where their pedals are absolute game changers and a must for me when it comes to braking. They have this amazing g-force feature I use and solely depend on now that I pass over sims that don’t support it. You have incredible connection to where the car is at on braking each and every time. I find that I don’t even need damping and judge how far I’m into the car’s braking based on how much g load is pressed against the pedals. This feature beside ABS if not more so Simucube should advertise for these pedals because its that good.

Thank you Nils! You eloquently formualate how I've been feeling about LMU. I commented on the tire noise issue in one of your first LMU videos and I have done so on the LMU discord, too. I got all sorts of backlash, because it's not "realistic". Now I've been sim racing for 35 years. The "realistic" and "not realistic" debate doesn't age well. Because it never is. With every new sim you get the fanboys raging about how it's the only realistic sim out there. And every "it's the most realistic" fanboy looks pretty silly when you look back with a bit of perspective. I call BS. It's a sim. If you want realistic, go drive a car. And, not knowing what your car is doing is not really realistic either is it, cos in a real car you do know what it's doing. I love the racing in LMU and I've enjoyed a lot of the driving. When you're in a flow some of the car/track combos feel absolutely fantastic and the racing is great. But the more time I spend the more the shortcomings like lack of tire sound and other means of communicating what the car is doing rise to the surface. I simply miss them. It takes away from the immersion for me. Something is lacking. Something just feels a little off. So yes, it may have the best FFB and it may be the most realistic. But I'm having less fun then with other titles, which also claim realism. Or communicate the realism in a different way. The good thing is that we are spoilt for choice. If LMU want to go the hyper realistic "you're not getting any feedback, be it sound or other cos that's not realistic" route, then good luck, I've enjoyed my time, now I'm off again, cya. If they choose to add tire sounds and/or other feedback, I'll happily come back. For now I simply enjoy AC/ACC/AMS2/rF2 more - but I'll happily keep reading LMU patch notes to see if some day they decide to at least gove us a choice. I mean, if you hate tire sounds, just turn them off ... but now I'm starting a whole new debate .. I know ... I've been around this niche long enough :P So now the realism brigade who weren't even born yet when I was already racing cars can join in and call me an arcade player. Scrolling down the comments I see that some of them have already arrived ... bless them ... :P

I see both sides. If we want it to be an over-the-top "realistic" sim then it should be as real as possible with the info it supplies you. But that should also mean, no radar, no tire widget, no spotter, no return to garage shortcut, no making setup changes on a server after a session has started or at least put a realistic time delay simulating the crew changing settings. Nobody really wants that because at the end of the day we play these to have fun and it's a game on a computer, it's not real. I personally think we need more info from the FFB and audio than real life so we can understand what is happening. After all, i don't recall the last time a driver crashed his car IRL because a dog jumped in his lap while driving.

I really got a lot out of this video. Couldn't understand why the cars felt clumsy and frustrating to drive, but this explains it. I really love WEC and Porsche so I definitely want to drive the Porsches in this game, but Nils is right, only the Ferrari LMPh car gives you enough feedback to the driver and it's the ONLY car in the game to drive until Studio 397 adds some complexity to the tire modeling for better feedback to the driver than it has now. My other wish is an improvement to AI because you can't drive close to them without them colliding with you.

Hi Nils, interesting to hear your thoughts on the vague FFB in very low speed turns. Apparently in most hypercars this is a product of their front suspension geometry where you have a sort of caster gain, which adds more turn in forces. Now here I am guessing but I think the suspension is also built to be quite anti-dive because they only have one adjustable aero part, so thats why perhaps the car rotates less on braking? But overall i quite agree with your analysis
@RacingPCs
@RacingPCs Ай бұрын
Thanks for the video, as always very useful! The latest modification in tyres for Hypercars has made the dropoff after peak, especially on the rear axle, really abrupt. You have to adjust the acceleration inputs. Tracktion on some cars, like the Ferrari, less the BMW, hass gotten tricky. In tracks like Le Mans partly based on chicanes and traction, it's harder to go on power as early. Also the Hypercars have lost a bunch of sec per lap in some tracks, like Le Mans. Also the air density and effectiveness of the front diffuser have increased, you need to adapt the setups otherwise they're oversteery at high speed. There are some kph lost on straights too. They also need to adjust the BoP as different cars responded differently to the changes.
@Law0fRevenge

When I tested it yesterday I came to exactly the same conclusion with the GTEs: Compared to before the patch, the window of grip on the rear is a lot wider and you can push way harder than it used to allow you before spinning out. And if you go too far, now it abruptly robs you of all control and spits you out. This will take a bit of getting used to certainly.

When you do more than 200 laps in LMU, you will see how you don't need to increase the sound of tires to feel the grip, the car and if you are oversteering or not, but if they put the tire volume as an option like in rF2 everyone happy, IMHO increasing the volume of the tires is not real and is not necessary in LMU/rF2 or AMS2. Also, although you know it, if you want more rotation with the brake at the entry and mid-corner you can adjust the brake distribution further back and/or the differential settings, among other things. The base setup is very stable for all drivers. Thank you for your review, I hope you dedicate more hours in LMU and later do another one with more experience in the sim.

As someone that got the game today this is an awesome breakdown video. I have hundreds of hours in GT7 and I've recently had my hands on ACC and iRacing as well. I've been enjoying this one today and I'm glad I found this vid so I could get a better understanding of it. So just to make sure I have it right, in this you can be sort of aggressive with the breaks but careful with the rotation right? I have abs off along with everything else so I want to build up good habits. Thanks!

@SimracingPopometer Ай бұрын
welcome to the sim world :) in this one you can hit the brake fast and on a high level initially at high speed, but the slower you get, the less brake the car will tolerate, due to the quickly decreasing downforce as speed comes down. so the trailing starts very soon after the initial hard braking. and into the turn you will still need the trailing, but only to control the speed and with that the trajectory the car is one, but not so much to put load on the front tires like in iracing or acc

Interesting video. I gave up on ACC after the last physics update as I thought the feeling and handling was really strange. I tried the Porsche GT3 and tried paid setups from 2 different sources and felt the car when sliding at the rear felt very strange. It nearly felt as if it had rear wheel steering in that the back rotated so much. I have always liked the feel of rF2 and I suppose that's why I like LMU. I felt iRacing was somewhere in the middle. All the previous is from the perspective of a slow sim racer who just wants a sim to feel as realistic as possible but has never driven a proper race car 😂

What do you think - should sims step away from sticking to irl feedback no matter what, or should we get additional sensations cause we're stripped of g-forces?
@tan143danh
@tan143danh Ай бұрын
From my perspective, a simulator must incorporate real-life feedback. Without this, the reference to actual driving dynamics is lost. As far as I am aware, there is no mathematical model capable of precisely replicating the real-world gravitational forces and translate them through the steering wheel which ultimately compromises the fidelity of the simulation.

In my opinion they should be more communicative than real. Sim Racing gaming is not for testing real cars, we don't have motion, actuators etc. I don't like iRacing FFB for example. Dull, flat. Tyre sound is stupid in a way but some of it helps drive better.

I mean, real driver (E.G. Daniel Morad) criticize LMU for too much information and details from FFB which IRL it doesn't have, while you feel it's too little information to feel the car doing, it's personal perspective I think, IMO simulation should do as best as they can to replicate real life with a little addition (FFB or active pedal or buttkicker and so on) for the feeling to fill the lack of G-force in sim rig. But it's a balance thing, and all people won't satisfy at the same time.... IMO IRL drivers can't feel lockup itself from Gforce but by other feeling (like can't steer in or can't rotate), with little about FFB lighter or something...

I think its more part of car characteristics of hypercars, they are made for le mans high speed corners. In the beginning had these issues too, but somehow managed to work for 2 and 3rd gear corners by working on the setup. Lmdh cars are also allowed to use power steering. checked some telemetry. At 80 kph the LMDHs still do about 1.3 G in a corner. Thats more than enough to feel variety in it when the car grips up or loses grip. visual feedback provides information about car attitude, but it doesn't provide information about whether or not you are extracting everything from the tire, if its fully loaded or just about over the edge, especially with the plateau in the grip/slip curve the game has, the visual feedback is exactly the same on either end of the plateau, yet the outcome on tire level is quite different.

@@SimracingPopometer The only real information if you want to know if a tyre is fully loaded, is tyre temp/pressure. Its available. Visual information is certainly an aspect (car orintation, other websites mentions it too), as also is G force can be used. G forces are vectors which go in different directions. LMDH cars has also an indication of slipping and its full of eletronics. You are probably not aware of it, devs of S397 are working together with drivers, teams and race-engineers to develop the game. Devs are not making a game to compare with ACC and/or iRacing. Making comparisons with iRacing is also ridiculous as its only 60Hz on ffb level. Others in the chat gave also good reasons.

wouldnt agree this is where arcade starts. then iracing is arcade and acc is arcade and pretty much any other game is arcade. you'd be surprised how much "arcade" you then have in every game. you dont sit in a 60°C cockpit, you don't wear a helmet with hans, strapping you into the seat with next to no option to look around you, or move, not wearing a fire proof suit heating you up further, not having a dirty visor, not having to reach for a button in the center console with the car shaking at high speeds. you dont have bad luck with a tire set that just doesnt work. you dont get randomized engine failures, your car isnt slowly tearing apart in a 24h race. and more importantly you dont have g-forces, which is the primary information irl drivers drive on. isnt everything automatically arcade then when it doesn't have that? we are already relying on other information as irl, i don't see a problem getting additionals sources of info to judge the car, as long as there is no unrealistic intervention. and the last bit is: if they want to become a big game with loads of players, the less gifted will need more clues or they will not stay.

Sorry you are being ridiculous. Without the real world forces we need some canned effects to compensate. Many real world drivers have stated it's harder to drive their car on iRacing than in real life, and iRacing is the one that refuses the most to provide extra effects. IMO it suffers for it, the FFB is dull and you need to memorise what you do with the car. I think they should make the extra effects optional ( most do to be fair ), then you can turn them all right down, and be happy with how hardcore you are, and the rest of us can turn them up and bit and have a more intuitive driving experience.

But those little lock ups of the inner wheel had huge consequences. That tire was always 15-20C warmer than other tires. And after 10 minutes / 5 laps, my FFB was shaking like I was driving with a blown tire. But I could do the same laptimes!!! It was just so unpleasant/tiring holding the wheel. I asked around, and they said I should run Interpolation at 6-10 on my Fanatec DD 8nm. That is insane. I stopped, because I don't have time to fool around. I'm rather doing races in iRacing.
