The camping season extends way into the colder months as people become increasingly outdoorsy. But do you know what to do when your lovely cycling trip on your mountain bike turns into a disastrous bear encounter? If only you knew about the triangle technique! Leah Lokan was a victim of a grizzly bear attack after a preventable encounter, and it seems like we hear an increasing amount of these cautionary tales. So do bear attacks happen more often nowadays? Which bears are more likely to attack? Are all bear encounters dangerous? Let’s get into it!

I was born and raised in Alaska and have had a few encounters where we saw the bear and we made sure they saw and heard us and have never had an attack. With that being said, I have NEVER gone into bear country without a firearm capable of taking down the largest bears. Chances are they will avoid you. If they decide not to avoid you, bells and spray will not save you.

I've seen black bears out in the wild twice. The second time was a mama bear and her cubs crossing a back road in front of my car. They crossed way, way ahead of me, so I had plenty of time to stop the car, and since I was the only car around, I just sat and watched them slowly meander across the road. They hardly looked at me, and once they vanished into the trees, I went on my merry way. But the *first* time... I was a kid, out riding my pony in the woods, and there was a lot of crashing in the brush around a bend in the trail. I thought it was just a deer or two, as they were common where we were riding, and stupidly paid no attention to my pony's body language -- he was walking stiffly, head up unusually high, taking deep loud breaths. We rounded the bend... and there was a black bear, maybe 20 feet away. The bear froze and stared at us... The pony and I froze and stared at the bear... I did at least have the brains to dig my hands into my pony's mane to do my best not to fall off. The bear, luckily, was as shocked by us as we were by him, and he turned tail and took off the way he had come, and at the same time my pony turned and ran for the barn (that is the *only* time he ever bolted for the barn in all the years I had him). Thankfully, no one was anything more than startled. I am glad I got to see that bear, though.

I once encountered a black bear cub about 50 feet away from me. What was scariest to me was that I knew the mother must be close, but I didn't know where exactly. I was concerned that the path I took to get away from the baby might put me near to its mother. So I backtracked the way I came as I guessed that was the path that was least likely to be near the mother as I would likely have met her on the way there and either made her run away with her cub or attack. This involved me squeezing through a barb wired fence about four feet high. I was scared that if I was attacked half way through I'd be pretty much a sitting duck. But once I got through, I was relieved as I figured the fence would slow down the mother bear like it did me. Then I got in my car and left.

I once was walking along a small river in the spring in Montana, I came across a 6 ft. tall sow black bear with a standing on her back legs, she had a small cub and was about 40 yards away, she took off up the slope to the right and cubby followed. I wanted to keep going down next to the river{ I was bushwacking, no trail} and decided since her and the cub were gone I would continue on. When I got to where she had been 15 steps through tall grass I looked down between my feet and there was a tiny little cub, its eyes were still blue it was so small and fuzzy as all get out, as cute as anything I had ever seen, a real live teddy bear. In my surprise I looked at it for about a second or 2 then became scared as F I quickly waded across the ice cold snowmelt river turned around and headed back upriver to the cabin I was living in, it was a few miles. She was a good looking bear with a white triangle on her chest, and I was glad not to see her again. The cutest things can be the scariest.

I've lived in Alaska all my life, and have spent a lot of time in the bush. I've run into many bears. I've been lucky and never been attacked. The worst has been a few bluff charges. The tips given in this video were spot on. Listen to it and watch it a few times if you're heading into bear country. One tip I can give is that, if you meet a brown bear, it may charge. The charge is most often a bluff. Expect a charge and resolve to stand your ground. That'll help keep you from soiling your pants when it happens. If it's obvious that it's not a bluff, drop to the ground like the video said. Good luck at that point. You'd be surprised how many attacks do NOT end with a human death. Although some friends of mine almost think that death would've been preferable to the injuries they sustained. One tying I found interesting is that, for some reason, bears like to pick you up by the head and swing you around. Like the girl in the video probably was. And yes, their mouths are plenty big enough to accommodate your head. They are BIG MF's.

Hair gel sounds like a good idea. Something with bittering agent in it. Question for Brett, since you've been bluffed. Do they get close enough in the charge for you to potentially take a step forward and clock it in the jaw? The combined momentum may very well break your hand but also knock the bear out cold. Would be worth a shattered hand to K.O a grizzly

It's probably too late once the attack starts, but black bears are much smaller than grizlies. So you can listen for where the growl is coming from. Also, if you do feel those claws, grizzly claws are ridiculously long. Way longer than other bears. Again, by the time you get to that point, it's probably too late.

Sometimes standing your ground works on dogs too. I was walking to my friend’s house at night and a dog came out of nowhere very aggressively. It kept trying to charge. It was scary. I never understand why people decide to go camping without properly researching. My family and I go camping in Canada every year and if we ever invite someone new we make them properly research because where we go camping at it's a 3 hour drive to the nearest town and the 12 mile road down to the campsite takes 2 hours alone because of how rocky and narrow the path is. Even then there is no signal whatsoever so it would take a long time for first responders to even find us.

What we always did camping by the lake is put a rock on the bottom of a waterproof bag, put the food in it overnight and sink it into the lake tied to a rope. I still wonder if the bear will ever figure it out, and I think they just might especially if you handled the rope with unwashed hands you just handled food with. So far though, we've seen plenty of bears around our camp site but the bag was always untouched (and the drinks were always kept cool).

Good advice. Also, if backpacking in bear territory, avoid setting up camp near water, where most people will camp (and where animals are common, day and night). Instead pause here to cook dinner and fill up water for the night and continue an hour or two to higher ground and camp in a place that doesn't look too busy, in terms of wildlife. Then use the triangle method and deploy your bear bag or canister and practice leave no trace. We adopted this technique after moving to Alaska and on our backpacking trips to Denali and PCT and didn't have problematic encounters with bears, encounters yes, just not bad ones. Better to camp high and dry.

Do these two things in any aggressive bear encounter. 1) use a high powered rifle, such as a Winchester. 300 or .338 or equivalent, or in a lurch a .44 is better than nothing. 2) If that fails, spray yourself with the bear mace. If that bear survived the shots, it deserves a seasoned snack, fairs fair. Cheers from Alaska 😉

There are honestly very few predators in the vast majority of the US. Most animals will run away from you. Mountain lions, Wolves, bears, and Coyotes are the only things to be afraid of. Wolves and Coyotes hunt in packs so unless you've got great instincts and perfect aim good luck. Mountain lions are ambush predators. If you see it it's probably not trying to eat you, but you should be scared. Bears are bears. It's best to follow the mans advice and live another day.

It’s also best practice to anything that smells, even toiletries, in a bear can or locker. I would trust more in a "fog & skunk spray". If you can spray a great amount of fog between, you can also retrait while spraying more, and the skunk smell would disable the bear to figure out your location. It would give you time to get ready the weapons you might have. It would be crazy walking around with a cannon in your hand thousands of hours. If not, it is too late when the bear is suddenly there.... Also, you could give him a chance to retrait with dignity, for as I see, they attack for they are afraid of the unknown.

Never had a problem with bears, but twice with bulls/cows. Is there any safety advice on them? One time, we came back from a hike and got surprised by fog. Suddenly we heard a noise, and a bull charged right through us! My father pushed me aside (the only laudable thing he ever did in his entire life, even if he saved my life back then it won't make up for all the bad he did to our family, but I can't ignore the fact that just once, he did something good for others). The other time, I was hiking and across the street was a fence and in the distance was a cow. I saw her, she turned her head to me and started charging at me, crashing through the fence and running past me. In both cases, it was utterly unprovoked from anything I can tell and they never turned around for a second charge. Their behavior is just baffling to me, just like horses and apes can be total A-holes for no apparent reason.

I live near and work in Gatlinburg TN and black bears are as common as squirrels. Had plenty of interactions with them, including accidentally walking up to one going through a trash bin during a smoke break with it being less then 20 yards from me by the time I noticed it. Black bears around here are fairly skiddish and have no interest in coming near people and there have been very few deaths from them. The only one I can recall in my lifetime was a lady tried to take selfies with some cubs about 5ish years back. Around here anyways just use common since and the info you give in this video is accurate when camping. Their sense of smell is incredible. Brown bears on the other hand are terrifying to me. Those things are giants compared to the bears around here. Edit: also agree it’s tragic when they have to be put down because of peoples actions. The moment you said dried blueberries, I know trouble was coming....unironically had to have a similar incident camping with fresh berries in the bc mountains with a black bear...never, everl ever keep berries, fresh or otherwise around in the open at all , heck even sealed i feel they can smell that...

Yeah, they could probably smell a reeces peanut butter cup in your pocket/backpack half a state away. lol

I use a portable electric bear fence around my campsite. This will at least make a bear pause and sniff around a ways from my tent so I have time to get my shotgun or spray/bangers to try and scare the bear off. Definitely helps me sleep better at night.

Instead of a red dot, mount a triangle shaped cookie cutter to a .500mag S&W. Very effective bear deterrent.

I was staying by Flathead lake when this happened and I heard about it, and it sure didn't give me comfort going into the forests around there alone...

Bears have been known to eat each other. ! Hunger is a survival mechanism ! Don't think they won't run you down and eat you ! They can run 30 mph !

i constantly have to remind myself that, despite all the other random dangerous creatures, there are no bears in Australia.
