Mayor Nagin let a huge fleet of buses FLOOD. We did fine during Hurricane Katrina, we still had electric, gas, water, phone. ZERO water accumulation in the streets until we hear a loud BOOM, then here comes the high water.

If the L.A. riots taught me anything, it's that the safest place to be is in a book store. I drove along Sunset Blvd. after the riots and all the stores around the local Crown Books had been looted, yet that store was intact. But apparently all night long, not one person wanted a book or knew anyone else who wanted one either.

That's so true. I work in a general/grocery store and lot of the time I have a long line of customers I'm helping one customer at a time then you have these inpatient, rude, cussing, and ill-mannered people wanting you to help them first when they're not in line and try to cut others that have been waiting in line properly. I tell them you need to be patient and learn to wait in line like everyone else. I also tell them there are people who are in line before you came. They don't like it I just don't care when they are acting selfish and rude they need to wait like everyone else. Their cussing and intimidation don't work on me it may work on others. They get scared when I tell them off. I've been doing it for years. Just because I'm nice don't mean you can walk all over me, intimate, and harass me.

Years ago I was in line at Walmart in the garden center. There was one line & 2 cash registers. Everyone understood that you stand in the one line and whichever register opens first, that's the one you will check out of. This very rude woman walked right past the line and to the register that just opened up. I was like fifth in the line and brave enough to say "Excuse me ma'am. We are all in line for the next open register. You should step to the back of the line." She used a bunch of explicit language with me, basically telling me that nobody was at that register so go screw myself." I responded with "EVERYONE IN THIS LINE HAS BEEN WAITING TO CHECK OUT LADY. What makes YOU so special that you can bully the rest of us?" She turned to the cashier who said "everyone has been waiting in line ma'am' to which this rude woman SLAMMED down her items, yelled out a bunch of curse words and walked out. Everyone in line thanked me for being brave enough to speak up because they were all intimidated by this woman who thinks the world owes her something. If there is one thing I have learned in life it's this: If you do not show fear, people will back down eventually. Sure, it could go sideways, but I'm sure that the 12 people in line with me would have assisted me and forced her to comply. Obviously, nobody was going to come to her rescue & side with her. If I were the only one in line I may have changed that judgement call and let karma handle it, but I will never allow a bully to shove their way in out of fear.

@@melissasmith1562 She is traumatized and hoards food now... but hates guns... go figure. But her family survived by building a fake wall up against front of the real wall and stacking hundreds of small bags of flour (bleached, unbleached goes rancid) in the space between the studs and the drywall. They put their couch and some shelves in front of the fake wall, to hide the small holes wherever they needed to reach in and grab a bag of flour. (Her mom quietly bought and extra bag of flour or two every time she went grocery shopping to avoid attracting attention) They often only had bread and jam, or bread and water to eat. It worked. But they were still home invaded and robbed of food and valuables several times, by the local militias(Military men think of themselves first, and have no problem robbing the civilians they are supposed to protect, you know... because they are "special" and "giving the ultimate sacrifice" so they "deserve" to steal from others. And they have the guns that civilians do not...). And were VERY lucky nothing worse happened to them. But the white flour hoard was never discovered. Her family bugged in, typical middle class, so they did not have Selco exaggerated tall tale adventures of mayhem. They avoided conflict like smart people, and most of her neighbors were decent people, so she does not have many stories.

We used to live in a high-end neighborhood in SW Florida. Even so, two days before Hurricane Irma hit Florida in 2017, my wife was at the grocery store getting a few things for lunch; people were grabbing things out of her cart and pushing her away from the shelves, and she called me because she was terrified. I told her to just come home because we have plenty of food. My wife is an anti-gun person, but, when she got home, I showed her the guns that I have owned for years. She had never known that I owned them, so she just stared at me . . . then, I told her, "If you think people are "friendly" now, just wait until the power is off for a week and "their food" is in our house and they won't mind ki!!ing you for it. I don't have guns to hurt other people. I have guns to prevent them from hurting us." Sometimes, the people you think are your neighbors and friends become animals when the food and water get scarce. We now live 10 miles outside of town just to avoid the dog-eat-dog mentality that happens even when something small disturbs the norm.
@dbrennan1523
@dbrennan1523 Жыл бұрын
Good thing you were prepared. Anti-gun people have had the luxury of society protecting them and cannot foresee that protection ending has been my experience. 100 years this was not a concept. Many didn't live in large population centers and before Ford you had to wait for someone with a horse to get to you. You were dead, you stuff stolen and your house razed with fire before anyone showed up. Then if it wasn't people you had wolves, bears, snakes and a bunch of other stuff. A firearm is just a tool, it can be used for good or bad. Better to have one as a good person and never need it, than need it and be waiting 5-10 minutes for police with NO emergencies just for them to make it through traffic, during emergency's expect hours or days... This goes back to the mentality of the people 100 years ago, you have to protect yourself.

So true. Not long ago I had a long conversation with a young man at work who had just gotten engaged about his responsibilities as head of the household. That included safety and security of the family. I asked how much no perishable food, drinking water and extra hygiene products he had on hand. He had none... and argued that he didn't have anywhere to stow it in his small apartment. Told him to make room in a closet and correct it immediately. I then explained how to use the hot water tank as a potable water source, fill up the tub if possible etc.. I could tell he was skeptical and was concerned that his GF would think he was crazy... but he addressed the issue that very night. Two weeks later, C19 hit. The next month a water main break caused their whole complex to be without running water for a week.

I don't know if the police were involved in such activity after Katrina although it would not surprise me. I do know that the National Guard was very involved in that activity. During the day they would perform activities that you would have expected, rescue, security and other such lawful acts. However when night fell, they would go house to house, beat on the doors and if they got a response would kick in the door, shove their automatic weapons in the face of the occupants, assault them, and threaten them with bodily harm or death if they refused to turn over any firearm they had. This activity was revealed by a member of the Oklahoma National Guard that was there to supposedly assist those still there. That was a clear violation of the law and the constitutional rights of those citizens, but no one was held accountable for these atrocious acts.

Hurricane catrina had people doing crazy things. There was a dude who used a walkie talkie to reach out to some rescuers and claimed he had a family stuck in his house. In reality he was planning a ambush on the rescue personnel because he wanted the boat and the gear. The thing is the people who were acting as rescue personnel were part of a local militia. So when they arrived he just opened fire at the men with a handgun and they fired back with long guns. The thing is this kinda stuff happened more than you would think. You are directly responsible for your own security. I know that a lot of the "preppers" sound crazy because of their obsession with being able to inact violence. But if you are not able to defend yourself then the truth is you're likely going to be the victim of someone who truly doesn't care about the mortality of what they are doing.

I was deployed to New Orleans with the 82nd right after Katrina. A key point was that those police that "didnt show up to work" where actually just names on paper that the "Mayor" Ray Naggin was collecting the salaries of to use as a slush fund for his pet projects. Sure there were police who left with there families but alot stayed behind. This was explained to me as an NCO by several police precinct captains that I had spoken with during our foot patrols of the city. Gangs. They took over little fiefdoms in the city just as you expect. Since there were no police to stop them they would shoot at there rivals first and then move onto anyone in there "territory." Situational awareness and keeping your head on a swivel. Three hot meals and an overnight is all it took for a general breakdown. The reported stat of deaths from Katrina was HUGELY under-reported.

@@taxat10n1sth3ft I thought the same thing, but when you have someone shooting at you or pointing the barrel of a rifle at your head the last thing on your/my mind would be the caliber. Also, when he said he has a "22" rifle he didn't elaborate - could be a .223, .222, etc. Perhaps he was simply trying to make a point. What worries me the most is that people like him will definitely be around and willing to take whatever we have. Defense of our property, person and family will definitely need to be at the forefront of our prepping. It's not something to be taken lightly. I know since my discussion with him I've take our defense systems a bit more seriously. If my neighbor thinks this way and is openly bragging about it can you imagine what those starving masses will be willing to do to us? Agree, demographics are a huge factor. The more dense the population, the more they rely on daily stocking of the shelves and lack great stocks of inventory, the more chaos and violence will occur as shelves quickly become bare. Also those in dense population areas also likely live in smaller residences (apartments, condo's) where they can only store and prep so much, and where something like a fire could force you out. If you live in the county outside the city there is more opportunity to bug in, more people prepared with chickens, gardens and such, less likelihood of people venturing out to loot and commit violence.

It would take quite a overwhelming level of exigent fear - massive fires come to mind - to push me to bugout. And I have prepped accordingly. The problem is I am old. I have significant health concerns. And series of vertebrae and spinal injuries that have left me with reduced mobility. If I was in my 20s and in peak health, but bugout ceiling might be pretty low. I just went through hurricane Ida... my home town was destroyed... we were the strike area for the highest impact. After the hurricane there is a period where the law enforcement and emergency responders had to adjust their game plan to meet the needs of the people in their area and the unexpected things that came up ,like that the roofing tiles with their nails sticking out took out all the tires and there was a shortage of tires as a result of the squad cars needing to have their tires replaced or repaired. The looters that were caught faced a 1 million dollar bond to get out of jail. The looters took advantage of the crippled law enforcement in the time right after the hurricane and before the roads were passable to bring in additional forces. 2 of our main hospitals were forced to limit their er because their generators didn't all come on like they should have. The grid was down, so the banking system, internet and other ways we communicate or pay for things was down. This meant that panic set in when people who were in destroyed homes had no clue what was being done to help them because there was no way to find out. The radio stations were all reporting on their own damages, not ours... our stations were down with the grid. The roads leading to our area were shut down... so for a time no supplies were coming in... no fuel , no food, no help. When you lay this on top of the huge group of newly homeless people... it got serious very fast. We were essentially cut off from everyone else with the help that would come trying to figure out a way to even reach us. So... I say all of this to drive home the point that it can go very bad... very fast... and as ready as you think you are, you will still have your world rocked hard. Like for example what if something like this happened and all of your prep items were destroyed or became unreachable. So.. build resources in your head too..like ways to survive from nothing. Start with reaching out to God... your first resource for prepping.

I was dispatched to Northridge from South LA and helped to evacuate Northridge Hospital. The disaster became even more apparent. The Hispanic population filled the streets and the parks. I found out that was common in the m their home countries because the buildings and homes there were likely to collapse, so they got out from under roofs as quickly as possible. Tent cities spring up everywhere. We had several major aftershocks. Gas and water mains were on fire as the fuel and water mixed. We were then dispatched back to South LA and that’s where the fireworks were. Police were not escorting us yet. We responded to a car accident involving two opposing gangs (we found this out after we arrived). Bodies were lying all over the street as they got out and shot each other. The city was very dark that night. Gunshots rang out everywhere. It was very easy to see that this one disaster, and not the BIG ONE we’ve been told to expect, was already causing a breakdown of society. With more and more gangs, MS-13, Antifa, and others, I shudder to think about the next one.

that sounds like a typical night in South LA, this was NOT the norm in the San Fernando Valley at all. I was there. Hispanos fill the parks because they live in multi level apartment complexes that arent generally as safe. What you said about the homes collapsing in their home countries isnt that true either.. Least for Mexico. Electricity was on in SLA also. smh

@@wojapi7538 Agreed. I have witnessed the exact opposite of what people in this post are talking about. Disasters bring people together and the few bad apples get weeded out fairly quickly by the majority law abiding citizens. Human beings are incredibly resilient and resourceful.

I have not forgotten this story a mechanic told me and my wife last year, when the pandemic was leading to food shortages: in the grocery store, a woman took a pack of pork chops from his shopping basket. If you say “It’s just pork chops so what” you really don’t get it.

I understand. People looked longingly at my last package of toilet paper during the cvid shortage. I watched it closely as I could read their faces and thoughts of taking it out of my basket. I usually took a family member to the store to keep watch while I shopped.

Back in 2009 Kentucky was hit by a major Ice storm that took out our grid for 8 days. Some 3 days. I been prepping sense the late 80s before it became popular. We were the only ones in the neighborhood that had lights on waching DVD movies and eating 3 hot meals a day with a few snacks on the side. Everyone else had to leave and go stay with family members or hotels. 2009 I meant LOL
