Thibaut Courtois began his footballing journey for his local youth club originally as a left back. But by some stroke of luck or maybe even destiny, during a tournament for his club Genk, the squads goalkeeper suffered an injury and had to be removed from the match. The squad then looked over to no other than their left back and the tallest kid at the time, 16 year old Thubaut Courtois to put on the gloves, stand in front of the goal, and try as hard as he can to not f*** up. But much to their surprise, he would be an iron wall and so impressive that only a few months later, his coach forced him to stay on and continue to be their keeper .Fast forward to today, and he’s one of, if not, the best goalkeeper in the world. Courtois is definitely one of the best goal keepers for sure, he's top 3 for me. Him and Benzema had a very good year, without these 2 player's I don't think Madrid would have won much this year.

I would honestly say he single-handedly carried the game against Liverpool. The rest of the RM squad looked kinda average (for their usual quality) but Courtois had so many crucial saves, he truly was the iron wall for his team

He was booed in the preseason match against Atlético Madrid in 2019. There was tension because the fans preferred Navas over Courtois. I was there and I was kind of disgusted when that happen. That 19-20 season is where he started to earned the respect of the fans.

As a barca fan, I clowned courtois when he got embarrassed by messi whilst he was still at chelsea. But he has defo redeemed himself since joining madrid. . Personally I think hes been the best gk in the world since 19/20 when he singlehandedly carried that real madrid team to la liga. No ronaldo, bale was being phased out, benzema wasnt the player he is today, etc. I still have PTSD thinking back to on his performances that saved real madrid in so many games back then. What a legend.

The thing is, ochoa only turns of during these national events. At club level in mexico, nothing impressive or amazing is shown as often as his national team performances. Definitely a good national keeper, but club level he just completely turns into a regular keeper

The caption is not him playing as a defender. The "mine for talent" shirt was made by the club prior to the final game of the 10/11 season in which we were playing for the title. After we took the title, fans and players celebrated on the pitch and all players, including him as a goalkeeper, wore the shirt to celebrate a title won with a team full of academy graduates. As we are a coal miners team, the term "mine for talent" was a reference to the performance and our heritage. Never knew he played as a defender, probably prior to playing for Genk tbh. I did know he played volleyball for a long time.

I think the most important point in his career was the begining of the 2019/2020 season, just after his misrbile first season with Real Madrid, which was going to be a career ending one, acept for him keeping his cool, and focusing on coming back stronger.

Let's be honest here most of that Champions League final was Liverpool VS Courtois, and Courtois won it. That game was unreal. It was like Real had a brick wall covering that entire goal, what a fantastic match he had. He's one of the worlds absolute best goalkeepers, in fact he might be the best of them all.

Nah, man. Courtois' performance in the 2022 UCL final doesn't just go down as "one of the best goalkeeping performances" it goes down as one of the best performances by a player in a UCL final period. For me it's easily up there. Courtois was the best player on that field that match.

I was really happy when Madrid signed him in 2018 because for me Navas was decent but never world class that's why Madrid was chasing de gea for years and failed. But after his horrible season in 2018-19 many of my friends were abusing him though I always had my faith on that big guy and he definitely proves me right ✅ 🙌🏼

I think that he is definitely a top 3 keeper of our day, but it is hard to call him an all time great if you compare him to the buffons, neuer, zoffs or yashins. He’s simply not even near those keepers yet, but he is high quality.

Why not? He has been elite/world class for the past 8 years. He has won 1 champions leauge title, 1 Europa leauge title, 2 laliga titles, 2 premier leauge title. 1 prem golden glove. He's only 30. I'm not saying he's the best goalkeeper of all time. But he's surely one of the best goalkeepers of all time. Easily top 30. I feel navas deserves a mention in your list btw.

Navas wasn't aging... Navas was phenomenal and madridistas never wanted Navas to be replaced.. The first season when tibo became starting goal keeper for Madrid he received a lot of slack although that whole season Madrid was very bad but tibo also had to hear a lot.. U missed this

He was aging as in he was a getting older, not as in he was declining, which is true. And top level replacement is very difficult to find at the very high level, so when Real Madrid came across the Courtois opportunity, they seized it, it might seem cruel a bit, but you gotta prepare for the long term, it is what it is.

I don’t really like the idea of best goalkeeper. It’s a relatively easy position compared to say forwards, which is why there are so many good keepers that are interchangeable. De gea, Emerson, neuer, donnarumma, navas, Allison. Meanwhile there’s a clear list of best forwards in the world.

Not easy at all. Attackers get fed and rarely do all the work themselves. And they „only“ have to be good at a few things in comparison. For a top gk, u need reflexes, team (defense) command, play initiation, positioning, predictive ability (so very high game sense) and more. I.e, Nowadays, u also need to have a defenders skill set for sweeping. Additionally, there’s no one to fix your mistakes, while u always have to deal with the mistakes made in front of u and then often get the blame when u can’t. A goalkeeper will be considered a failure for 1 or 2 mistakes, a striker a success for 1 goal. Oh, and then there’s penalties as a reward if u do u your job right in knock out games while ur team doesent. So beyond the breadth of abilities top tier GK need to have, the psychological pressure is by far the most demanding of any position. It just so happens to be that u don’t actually notice when a gk exceeds to the same degree u will notice with even a mediocre striker.

for me the performance of Michel Preud'homme against Holland at the world cup 94 was as impressive as the performance of Courtois. But Courtois did it in FINAL of CL. Belgium

@@lexkanyima2195 no, it was only 7 for Preud'homme I think. Courtois is better for sure but because Preud'homme was smaller some saves looks more impressive
