That was an unusual occurrence, but looks to be a positive outcome. We’ve never had a heifer that young give birth, but it’s looking good at this point. An early start for the baby bull, and that young heifer.😂😂

Coming from a teenage mom….many many years ago…all of those cows were crowding your young mamma, trying to tell her how to be a mom! Haha… I recognized that behavior immediately!

I had the same thing happen a couple years back when the neighbors bull decided to visit my pasture and he managed to breed a young heifer. Same story, she had a smaller calf, which was small but healthy. She did a great job being momma after she figured it out.

Oh WOW! And we got “the rest of the story”, as Paul Harvey would say. Nice! I like getting the whole story all together. Thanks. How cute and beautiful this baby is, and what promises that bull has shown. QUESTION: Being that this baby has been born a bit late will that effect mama’s cycle for next breeding season? This was exciting and fun. I was concerned in the beginning and you didn’t give anything away, but allowed the story to develop naturally. I’m really grateful for your sake that this was a good birth, I know how it effects you and all of us, when a calf isn’t in good shape. What a relief. This was a wonderful true life story. Thank you. 😃 ❤ Hope you and your family have a great rest of your week.

I too would like to offer best wishes and every success with this new calf. But in this case I wish you every success with both of its parents as well! Perhaps this new young mother will prove to be a valuable member of your breeding stock. It seems though that not only is your young bull fertile, but that his young male calf may also have good genes. After all, you have been raising this young bull as a future breeding bull because of his pedigree. May I say, “Success to the Future!”

I had a similar thing happen with a 6-month heifer getting bred. I know it doesn't seem possible. Here is the story... In high school a buddy and I decided to each get calf for showing at the county fair with the encouragement of our FFA advisor. We purchased a lot from a local farmer. I was getting the steer and my buddy the heifer. The FFA advisor said there was an additional heifer so I said I would take it. These were about 8 month old calves purchased in late fall. My friend convinced me to show my heifer with his in the breeding heifer class. In July a month ahead of the fair. that heifer dropped a calf. I ended up still taking them to the fair, but now as a cow calf pair. The farmer saw it at the fair and said "I don't burreev (believe) it"! I still use that phrase and pronunciation when something unexpected occurs. The heifer had to be bred by any earlier calved bull that was not cut yet. This farmer never believed that it could happened. He refused to believe that cow and calf were the heifer he had sold me months before. He had never seen anything like it in his 60 years of cattle ranching. He had Red Poll mommas and ran Simmental bulls. The cow seemed to be a little stunted as she ended up having a smaller frame than her peers. She was probably 900lbs with the other cows being around 1200lbs. I kept her for about 5 years and she never had any problems calving or raising calves. All her calves were healthy. In fact I kept that first surprise calf as it was a heifer and she grew to a normal size. My buddy and I kept these 3 cows for about 5 years. The smallest cow that had the early calf was the boss cow of that group even though the other 2 outweighed her by 300lbs.

It will happen. Two years ago we had 3 of 15 get bred early (6-8 months), almost certainly from full age bulls. All three had calves unassisted. It seems to go in streaks- not sure if the year/weather or what. We'll go several years without, and then all of a sudden 2-3 will be bred early like that. We've started trying to get them all a shot of Lutalyse after we separate them to make sure we have minimal surprises.

I’m very happy to see such a happy and smooth outcome of this mishap! I recently heard a similar story, but the heifer was even younger. She was like 13 months or so when she was due. The owner had the vet do a c-section, and he said that the heifer would never have been able to birth the calf naturally.

Good looking calf. I had a similar deal last year. I usually keep around 10 heifers a year and I wean them as close to 6 months of age as possible. Well 9 months after weaning I was pulling a calf from one that had only been with my heifer bull for around 2 months. After doing the math she was bred on her mom less than a week before I weaned her and was almost exactly 6 months old. Sadly she was bred by my Angus Plus bull and the calf was just too big. Good news is that she delivered a calf last week less than 10 months from when I pulled the dead one. This morning the bull already had her separated and she was standing for him. My wife has named her Fertile Myrtle.

First thing I thought about was the additional nutrition yourcows have been getting with the Redman salt blocks. I wonder if that could partially explain the early development of both the heifer and the bull calf.

This is the sweetest surprise for sure!❤ Is the baby a heifer or bull? I think it needs a special name. I heard you say "you're a tiny little thing", so I think it's name should be "Tiny"! That can be a good name whether heifer or bull. I thought it was cute how all the cows and calves rushed over to welcome baby to the herd...even though their presence wasn't good at the time! Glad you brought mama and baby to the corral so you could keep an eye in them, and they could bond together. Her breeding with the young bull is a miracle! Who would of thought.
