In this video I welcome our first calf of the year to the ranch. Watch along as you get a front row seat to the the first moments of this calf’s life! Later I’ll put that rest of the cows at the home ranch out to pasture and go through the herd to figure out which cows will be the next to have their calves!

Big congratulations on the 40 thousand subscribers and the beginning I gotta of calving season. I think that you are off to a great start in 2021. Watching and walking with the cattle is just a natural part of what you do and it certainly shows with their acceptance of you. Of course they also know that it is from you that they get to eat that hay😍. Continued good luck with the calving.

I don’t know how I missed this video but I’ve been trying to go back and catch up on anything of yours. I’ve missed. I’m so glad I found it because I love baby cows but my very favorite is a white faced black Angus. This baby calf at the end of your video is so precious and I really appreciated what you were saying about not handling the Calf very much to keep your scent off of her, so it’s not to cause any problem between mother and baby. I think a lot of people don’t think about that when a baby animal is born and they just wanna hug it and pick it up and play with it like it’s a toy and yes they are so cute. In my opinion there’s no cuter baby animal than a baby call with brown eyes and wet little nose and wobbly legs trying to find out how the world works❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️(OK maybe a baby giraffe is right up there with it)😊, but I don’t have the opportunity to see many of those here in Iowa or Kansas or Oklahoma. Watching your video I’ve been educated by so many things, Tyler and maybe it’s foolishness on my part or a lack of education geographically because I’m not stupid I’ve been to college three times with honors every time... but I didn’t realize California and Florida both have cattle. Such a big mistake on my part because when you think about American history, people went west and started cattle ranches and it was the biggest investment and profit for those who did… Anyway, I really enjoy your videos and listening to you teaching educate us all about life on the Farmer Tyler Ranch ❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️

You do an awesome job at camera placement, droneshots, and piecing in events about what happened (how you called it) next day. Does your wife help you? I’m a fairly new subscriber. I just love seeing you all in action, kids, baby critters, momma cows, dogs, pigs, wild geese, chickens and you!! Did i miss something? ❤❤❤

There was a Farmer in West Tennessee that raised reg Charlais he began to breed his heifers to Texas Longhorn bulls due to lighter birthweight calves... He wanted his heifers to have as easy time birthing as possible 55to 65 lb calves rather than 90 to 100 lbs calves

Pulling the afterbirth can rip the spots where the sack and uterus connect. Cows not cleaning are usually hypo-calcemic. 500 mL bottle of 23% calcium subcuraneously is often what the cow needs to drop her cleanings. Encouraging consuming 5 to 10 gallons of tepid water after delivery is also helpful.

Today was the first day I watched you. It was the episode with the calf that died 16 hours after birth. I am an OB/pediatric nurse. I’ve been a nurse since 1974. Over the years since the Korean War, it was found that quicker intervention before a cascade of events set in, had better outcomes for those injured in battle.. This led to the development of the MASH units during the Vietnam war and the development of the modern day emergency rooms. Many times after a stressful human birth the problem is as simple as needing glucose to prevent brain damage and further stress leading to a downward spiral.. Is that something that you guys consider doing? I know things are different in the animal world. I respect your desire to let things happen naturally. It’s so hard to know whether to be aggressive and intervene or hold back and let nature take it’s course. I saw a Zoo program about a baby rhino that was rejected at birth. The zoo struggled with the animal until it was 18 months old. It had a neurological disease and died. The mother seem to know at birth that something was wrong. So I have a few questions for you. Sometimes human babies have infection at birth because they were born with the membranes ruptured for too long. Is that a possibility with cows? Because I did not see you consider antibiotics as a possible treatment, so I was just wondering. How long would you let a cow be in labor before intervening with the chains? Have you ever not been able to pull a calf? Do they do cesarean sections on cows? (Not that it was indicated here). My daughter says I asked to many questions. I am sorry for the loss of your beautiful calf. You and the mom did all the right things. Sometimes what happens happens.I hope to see how she does next year. Lynn in Louisiana

I was more familiar with pigs than cattle...one trick with hogs is in order due to circumstances if you have to try and get a sow to adopt another sows piglets spray a mixture of vanilla extract and water on her litter and the piglet you want her to adopt...it's a trick I learned from an old farmer.

Those first few moments where mom and calf make a bond, sooo important. If she doesn't have the interest or is confused.....hellooo bottle calf. Last year I had a 3rd year mom lose track of her calf right at birth and confused a 3 week calf as being hers. She chased the actually mom around the 20 acre "pen" for 24 hrs......they finally worked out the co-parenting schedule (lol) which gave me a HUGE heifer calf and a confused bull calf I bottle fed and called "bubba". That "Hormonal-Induced /Learned behavior" is so hard to mange once the moment is lost. Even with an experienced mother.
