How This Eco-Friendly Home Uses Biophilic Design Principles to Connect With Nature

The clients wanted their home to better connect with the natural environment, which could be found right at their back gate. Their property backs onto parkland in Northcote, which used to be a quarry, and then a rubbish tip.
The family of five are avid campers, enjoying the outdoors and nature whenever possible. However, with their three children growing, they needed more space to come together but also have their own space when needed. The existing house lacked a connection to the environment, which was a desire they had.
The core idea of the home was embodying the client's affinity for the natural environment, so Ben Callery Architects looked at biophilic design. Biophilia refers to the love of nature, so incorporating nature into the home was critical instead of completely sheltering the clients from the elements.
The home features a lot of natural timbers, both internally and externally, which reinforces that connection with nature. The interiors have a sense of peace and tranquillity, using the strategy of prospect and refuge to accentuate this.
To reduce the impact on the environment, the original California bungalow was retained, despite no heritage protection preventing demolition. This maintains the embodied carbon and reduces landfills and waste. In addition, the home limits energy-intensive materials such as concrete by relying on lightweight construction wherever possible.
Fundamental sustainable design principles are used, such as passive heating and sun-shading elements to use the sun to its advantage. The home can open up when needed to help passively cool, and there is no gas, instead opting for electric appliances with solar panels to produce as much energy as possible.
Wakanui Trail House recognises that we are constantly disconnected from nature, often spending all our time in homes and workplaces controlled by machines and sensors. With that level of detachment, Ben Callery Architects wanted to create opportunities for the owners to reconnect and, in doing so, be more in touch with nature, have a more healthy life and have a lower impact on the environment.

Great to hear an architect describe a project in a relaxed, conversational manner and talk about the client and their lifestyle, rather than 10 minutes of waffling BS archispeak.👍

The difference between the bungalow and the addition is jarring. I wouldn't want to spend much time in the bungalow, knowing how amazing the addition is! The timber is so warm and organic. Perfect palette.

Nothing but envy from me. I too live backing onto parkland in the north west of Melbourne, out Keilor way, and I'd love to see this amazing architecture in my local area. Embracing the local environment through architecture. Love it.

I love this kind of architectural designs; not only because they radiate an atmosphere of authenticity and grandeur, but because they look so nice and warm. The kind of home you don't want to be away from for long. I have an Arco lamp from Barcelona Designs that would look great next to that sofa and become my favorite reading station. Uhmm just daydreaming...***

I think whoever came about with the concept of unnecesarily big mansions should be placed on a pike.I love the coziness of the house.Why would you choose a big extra mansion over this?The goal should be just enough space which is exquisitely done.

Looks great, but struggle to understand how it is passive solar if it is a light weight construction? With little thermal mass (concrete floor or a trombe wall) to store heat, there would be over reliance on active energy for heating and cooling. With so much window area this must present a negative value for thermal performance. I live in a home with double-glazing, and even so, I wish we installed triple glazing in our Melbourne home.

If you have that lower floor-higher floor void connection, your higher floor will be getting more heat in summer and you lower floor will be getting colder in winter. On top of that, noise from the living room will more easily find its way into bedrooms above. But hey, you can sell it as "really connecting 2 spaces" to buyers who don't know any better. Revisit them in a decade, see what they think about all these connections. :)
@slickmcCool
@slickmcCool 2 жыл бұрын
I have a pretty inexpensive air circulation system that easily prevents temperature stratification and I see the same vents in this house and it seems as though the bedrooms can be closed off from the noise by those nifty doors they showed us. But hey, people who don't know better can buy a different house. Bet most people would be happy there in a decade.
@0631ix
@0631ix 2 жыл бұрын
@@slickmcCool If that's the case, I'm happy to stand corrected. But I'm industrial designer, not an architect, my brain works a bit differently - why create systems to fix some faulty design, when you can create good design in the first place?
@slickmcCool
@slickmcCool 2 жыл бұрын
@@0631ix it happens in every home. There are other considerations than air flow when designing a house. Many other reasons. My house is well enough sealed that I need an air circulation system. And you would need to explain what you mean by good design? How well something is designed is dependent upon the desired outcome I would think. It would be useless for me to have a house thats quiet and even temperatured; but not be useful or attractive to me.
