Start keeping track of parts and versions on spreadsheets, once you start machining stuff yourself, you need a good way to keep track of all the stuff you forgot you made. You never know when a previous version can help you out in the future. Often I look at previous work with current eyes and I get new insights looking at what I did. It helps when you know why you do something because you were the one that did it.

Spreadsheets are not a good way to do this. It isn’t that hard to start out with a real database that is much more capable, reliable and provides much greater query and reporting tools.

Hey Dark Aero - I have a question about your carbon fiber frame. You are aware of the effects of lightning on carbon fiber and how it can shatter the material, hence why the Boeing 787 engineers layered a lightning absorbing material on the airframe over the carbon fiber composite material they used for that jet. I’m not sure if you intend on making this aircraft IFR certified or if it should not be flown if chances of lightning remain anywhere among one of its flight paths. If you DO plan on making this plane IFR certified, how do you guys plan on dealing with the lightning problem?

Just my 2 cents worth: Just because you can do incredibly complex machined parts doesn't mean you need to, or should. You can't make money making the most expensive, elegantly designed and complicated parts. Pretty much all the metal parts I see here could be made cheaper and easier. Production engineering is reigning in the design engineer who has been given a blank check!
@DarkAeroInc4 ай бұрын
Thank you for checking out the video and thank you for sharing your thoughts! Agreed! Machined parts shouldn't be overly complicated and should be designed for manufacturing. We have discussed this topic in a number of our videos. A few here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m85zbNKGy5-qnWQ.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qcicabFjsrvZqGw.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ft9_psZzqdncmqM.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ptmGo8iayJbTf40.html Many of the machined components we show probably look more complicated than they really are. Remember that we machined all of our prototype parts on an entry level CNC mill, which should serve as a indication of how challenging they are to manufacture.

Do you need static dischargers on an aircraft with a carbon shell?🤔🤔
@AC-jk8wq4 ай бұрын
Great question! Most likely… A want vs. need. My plane’s surfaces are painted… so the static build up is mostly paint rubbing air…. Won’t change much what is under the paint. Where the static really builds…. Is flying through clouds and snow… Used to be able to hear the effects of static in the radios…. (Back in the day). I have No idea how sensitive GPS antennas are to static build up/discharge… 😃

Static discharge is not as important as lightning protection. For a long range composite aircraft having fuel tanks in wings, this is almost a necessity.

It is really a nice looking setup. Specs about fluid wash/lube, etc. would be good. I guess I could look it up. You might want to get into race cars as well instead of just planes. Then eventually, you can build (me) a boat. ;). To get more into it, some cutters require a "cut in" path on every pattern due to devices like plasma cutters needing a hot start and then cut process.
