Landscape and sustainability influenced this modern farmhouse. Situated 90 minutes from Melbourne near a small rural community, the site sits in a little valley with views over an agricultural landscape.
The owners sought a simple, honest, modern farmhouse that blended into the landscape and was a home for them to live in, not admire like a museum.
LAYAN, wanting the home to be sustainably driven, retained as much of the structural elements of the existing 1950s cottage as possible and reimagined the layout with a small addition. A simple and modern material palette was used, with white and oak veneer in the interiors and a Shou Sugi Ban exterior, influenced by the history of the area.
The modern country home strongly emphasised sustainability, with the architect and owners wanting to create a better planet through a minimal footprint.

Amazing! This is a REAL home! The architect listened to the owners brief and ensured it was met completely. Sustainable and beautiful finished throughout. One of those " when can I move in?" homes. Excellent! Oh and how beautifully the building sits in the landscape. Without doubt one of the best. Thank you to the owners for sharing on the channel. Appreciated.

Did you film a close up of the gutters? Can't quite work them out. Loved it ,but would have liked to see a bit more of the off grid practical side (tanks, batteries etc) and how they fitted in with the house.

It's stunning! I wish a little bit of explanation was made regarding the off-grid details. Is there a solar component somewhere (It doesn't look like the roof is?). I assume it is heated by the wood fireplace and cooled naturally with open doors, etc but given 'off grid' is mentioned in the title it would have been interesting to learn more about that aspect and how challenging it was to meet the owners' needs. It's a gorgeous, seemingly practical space.

The house is really lovely. but heavy emphasis on sustainabilty in the video was a bit comical… I mean, it’s a huge house with glass walls built for two people. If they were serious about the topic, they would buy 36 m2 flat in an older apartment building. This is irritating:D

In the video, the man said that the home was designed to host their family. And a well-built home will last many decades, well beyond the lifetime of this couple. Regarding the option of living in an older apartment building - most such buildings are extremely energy inefficient, and coops/condos will often have all sorts of restrictions or even outright bans on replacing existing windows, heating and air conditioning systems. These people have created something of enduring quality and efficiency that will likely cost less to heat and cool than your "36 m2 flat in an older apartment building," while being far more beautiful and comfortable.

The majority of the surface area facing the sun is light-colored metal roof (see 0:44 for a view of the roof reflecting the sun, while the building itself is largely in shade). There are large trees on the east and west sides of the house providing some shade from intense low-angle sun in the morning and late afternoon (see 3:00 to 3:10 for a view of how shaded the home is on its western side). Additionally, the sliding glass doors are recessed under overhangs so high-angle angle sun in the summer doesn't enter the building (you can see the significant depth of the overhang at 2:03). This design is very sensitive to the issue of solar gain.

You said it's a "huge house" - it's not at all. It's a modest 3-bedroom home that uses good design to seem larger than it is (and the actual addition/new construction is probably close in size to the "36 m2 flat" you mentioned). The home is off-grid and self-sustaining. They reused the existing structure , and made extensive use of recycled materials. If your vision of sustainability is that everyone needs to live like monks in crumbling 36 m2 apartments where people have no space to host friends or family, I think you're gonna have a hard time with that.

The "sustainability" talk with the exception of reliable systems is bs. It was likely more sustainable to demoish the old shack and replace it. Such vitue signaling gotta stop.

The house looks wonderful. Floor plan is compromised because of the few retained walls. But owners seem happy which is great.
